I finished my nightshift the day before my birthday and was driving home listening to Crossfire and House is Rockin...I will never forget that day. RIP Stevie and I hope Kevin is playing with you up in Heaven.
I remember this night like it was yesterday. Bar none, one of the most amazing live performances I've ever seen. Took us 4 hours to drive back to Madison (normally an hour drive) and my roommates told us that Stevie had died...RIP Stevie Ray...we miss you!
My dad introduced me to srv's music when I was little and I've been a fan since I was little. God bless that man. I bet he's up in heaven jammin with Hendrix and all the other great guitarists that have passed on.
I miss you so much I have loved you'er still all the days of my life you always could be found in any little hole bar and you would get up and play.you always looked up to Clapton. you when out on the road one time and you live the life to the foulest . always will hold you in my heart .Just a good blues lover ......
@spenjax1111 Right before "Life by the drop" and the credits? Good question really. Sorry for the lack of better words, but it's him freestyling a solo from a well known song. Why I can't put my finger on it right now; I don't know. But it IS very familiar.
We are still so proud of Texas' Hero SRV. Unparalled talent, one of a kind unique clothing, ageless guitar style, incomprable vocals. He'll always be a Dallas Boy. Thank you Stevie for using your music to not only soothe the soul but to psychologically mend it. You speak the Universal language and made everyone feel like they belonged. It's been over two decades since I last heard to sing live - funny, it seems just like yesterday. Rest in Peace Stevie - Everyone Loves You forever! Barb
Cocoman191, what a dumbass , blues is NOT a color it's a feeling , it's a good man feeling down, it's a great feeling music without color, it can bring back sad memories or put excitement into new ventures !
i hate the fact that i couldn't listen stevie before. i hate the fact that he died so young. stevie, you are forever in the heart of all musicians that love you. thank you for giving us your amazing music.
I only gave this a thumbs up because I'm glad that nobody is forgetting Stevie!
Im not sure if I'm the first to notice this or not........ But did anyone else notice that when they showed SRV's headstone his birth year 1954 is also the birth year of the strat!!!!!!!!! Huh?!?!?! That makes you think
Stevie, I was only 5 when you died, but I hope you know how much you have influenced my life and so many other young guitarists out their. You truly were are still are a gift from god!
fuck airplanes and helicopters. they took away ronnie van zant, steve gaines, Randy Rhoads, andStevie Ray Vaughan. now we're left with wiz khalifa garbage.
if any one can play blues, why didn't the blues get started in Beijing? The blues got invented in the United States South because that where the Sons and Daughters of American Slaves were. In the 80's, because SRV like the was Albert King and other Blacks played, he tried to play like them but there was something missing in SRV's so call Blues. SRV invented White Boy Blues in the 1980's and There ain't nothing You or I can do about it.
Cocoman, grab your tinfoil hat and put your head in the corner until you can tell the rest of the class why that last comment you made was just plain stupid. Bonnie Raitt singing "Amazing Grace" at Stevie's funeral is the saddest part of this clip. Very touching tribute to a great man and an amazing musician...
I remember hearing an interview with that Redbird guy at a Dallas radio station, where Stevie talked about getting clean and getting off the tobacco, alcohol and other drugs that were ruining his life. And then the helicopter crash. Why, oh, why? Such a major talent we lost.
He died pretty much a year before I was born... When I die, Im going to take my guitar, go up to stevie, Kneel, Say I am not worthy to learn from you, but I beg of you, teach me all that you can!
I live 15 mins. from where this happened. We didn't go that night because we heard it would be a very foggy ride home. Got to meet Jimmy Vaughan last year in Milwaukee. He was very cool.
The song "Life By the Drop" was written by Doyle Bramhall who passed away about a month ago. Today we got the news that long time friend and Bass player David Frame passed away too. They are having one hell of a jam in heaven today with Uncle John Turner on drums!
A piece of me died that day. What a talent and he had just gotten his life together; everything was goin his way. Don't it always seem to go. Lord, do we miss you, Stevie.
I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan in concert at the old Omni in Atlanta Ga back in 1985...he was the opening act for Huey Lewis and the News...at the time I had never heard of him but let me tell you he really put on a show...great music and REALLY loud LOL! A tragic loss at such a young age in the prime of his career
the song being played on electric guitar around 4:54 is Life Without You from the album Soul To Soul (this is a live version, possibly from El Mocambo or Montreaux), and the acoustic song right after is Life By The Drop from the album The Sky Is Crying.
I had just graduated college and this was the last concert I saw before leaving the midwest and relocating to Florida. My friends and I hung out waiting for the parking lot to clear out and I remember watching the helicopters as they took off after the concert. And then came the news. I cried like a baby and walked around numb for days. I had seen Stevie in concert several times. The musical journey he took you on was like no other. Amazingly gifted artist & truly one of a kind.
I had just crossed campus at college when I got a call telling me about the crash. I was crushed, still am. Watching this video just now I had almost the same feelings all over again. SRV is often imitated never duplicated. Someone should make a docu-movie about him and title it "Texas Flood".
@HvyWeight Oh hell yeah. Also there should be a real good quality hollywood budget movie about Jimi Hendrix. WTF how on earth hasn't there been one. Even Stevie would have said the same. But yeah, i remember the same day, time and exactly what i was doing. Holding a welder in my hand at my engineering job, and listening to the radio. I stopped and didn't do any more work for the rest of the day. None! Rock On! And now i own a SRV guitar and a genuine 64 vibroverb amp. funny that. wink:-)
what a magnificent player,i was comin home from work andi heard it on the radio, and got that sadness that i had felt the day john lennon died. he went way to soon . old sayin the good die young
On Aug. 27, 1990, I was driving my car on the highway when the man on radio said SRV had just died in a helicopter accident. Got off at the next exit and stopped at a gas station. Went in to get a pack of smokes even though I already had a full pack on me. Went back into the car, sat there for a second and then started crying. Sat there audibly sobbing for a good 15 minutes or so.
I remember that day, I was working graveyard shifts and woke up that afternoon and my mom telling me one of my favorite guitarists had died in a crash. I rushed downstairs, turned on the TV and found out it was SRV. I was devastated. I was in agony for months - still can't believe to this day he is gone. I miss you man - you will always be in my heart and soul.
I'll never forget the sadness I felt that day. I was at the gym, when all my good buddies, and the ladies that I took to see him told me. I didn't believe it until I heard on the gym radio about thirty seconds after they told me. For someone who isn't related to my family, or would even know me on the street, I felt the pain like a family member had passed. It was a sad day, but I was lucky enough to see him and enjoy his music. RIP to an inspiration and a stranger, but still a friend.
I was sitting at the bar, drinkin my liquid lunch, the noon news was on, and they said that SRV had been killed in a helicopter crash... I yelled at the tv, "What? The hell you say! No, man! Can't be!" (etc.) I didn't go back to work that afternoon. I just sat there and let Jim Beam kick my ass. Sadness dipped in a well full of agony.
Jam on, man, There's a whole boatload of guitarists who (still) miss you.
I'm a kiwi and i went to austin on business... i was a musician and wore out those records, all of them. I was so excited to be in austin and i went into antones. There was chris layton. Had a photo with him and i'll never forget it. If i wasnt so star struck i would have had a conversation. I was 14 when steve died and i was shattered. He had a big impact on people and thats a fabulous thing.
Stevie had a chance in the early 80's to leave his band and play with David Bowie on tour. He accepted and in the last minute he told David he couldn't leave his band behind and he stayed and did thier own thing. We are all so lucky that Stevie was such a humble peron and stuck it out and gave us some of the best music ever. Thanks Stevie.
Maybe the biggest R&R tragedy Ever! I was lucky enough to see him play the summer of '89 in Detroit. I shed a tear whenever I hear this amazing guitarist play.
No, actually most people there said Clapton downed SRV that night in playing. They liked to compete with each other with their different styles. Eric was devastated when he heard the news :(
I should also ad that my brother passed away 12 hours before Stevie. It was a really fucked up weekend. He died around 1PM on Aug 26. I believe it was a Saturday. While mouring our loss, a family memebr came into the room and said that Stevie had been killed.
I have been there to that grave. In 2007 I went to the SRV remembrance ride and concert. I was guest of Cutter. Stevie's manager. The day of the show myself and 15 made others the trip to Laurelland cemetery.I stood at the grave with his old friends and fellow musicians. I'm just a fan, I always knew I would go there, but I had no idea it would be like that. I was driving. Before we even got out of the car i Had a stream of tears rolling down my face, it was unbelievable. Thank you Stevie.
i saw him play with joe cocker at blossom music center in ohio that summer. he was awesome, i was shocked to hear the news when he died in this crash. he will live on, his music was great.
Rest in piece brother. I wish that I would have had a chance to meet you and play music with you. Most of what I know came from you and without your influence, I would be nothing on the guitar. I know that you were put here for a reason and now you are playing for God. Much love, your unknown friend, your brother, and your apprentice. Thanks for all you have given to us, thanks for everything.
A sad, sad day. I did a gig a few miles from Alpine Valley in 2001. When I played "The House is Rockin" the reception was so poweful and heartfelt I broke down and cried onstage. You know what, I was not ashamed to do so!
I still know exactly where I was when I heard the news... I was a kid, just learning guitar, and I came in from doing chores, and mom met me at the steps.. she said "Something is on the news, about a guitarist killed in a crash" I asked who it was, and she didn't know.. then I asked "Was it Stevie Ray Vaughan?" and she said "Yeah, that's the name... I don't know why I had to tell you, but I just felt like I had to"... I ran inside, and stared at the TV in disbelief... my world was crushed...
When Stevie was alive Iliked him but didn't listen to him much, then after he died a few years later I started playing the guitar and realized how amazing he was, what a waste I would give anything to see him play live.
this was hard to watch. I was at that last show..i will never forget trying to find our car in that horrible fog that was there that night. we never heard the crash, and at work the next day I heard the news and my mind could not comprehend it...I had just seen him hours ago. I had seen him 6 times and this night at Alpine Valley he was so on, more intense than any other time I had seen him. It still hurts so much, I am so blessed to have seen him so many times. RIP Stevie!
his fire is very much alive..whenever i need to have some passion i just think of Stevie's guitar sound. not only was his music great but his victory over addiction, regularly speaking at AA meetings passionately delivering messages. some recordings are on youtube. he was a real shooting star
I got to see SRV once, in 1984, in Corpus Christi, for their "Couldn't Stand the Weather" tour, I think. Believe it or not, I was more excited about seeing Duke Jupiter, who was the opening band. Who knows who Duke Jupiter is today!!! When Stevie came on stage, my friend Andy and I were absolutely blown away. In the back row I became a lifelong Stevie Ray fan.
When I need a lift, musically, nobody approaches this man and his bandmates.
Got to see SRV one year before he went home .I've been playing guitar for some time but Holley crap when I saw him play it was like getting a guitar lesson on how u are meant to play .not buy copying someone's playing but buy your hart .RIP
@sithtodd yep, that's why I don't understand all these schools of rock, or rock seminars how to be a rocker, either you play from the heart or you don't.
I was working at a music store repairing a guitar when someone came into the back and said that Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed the night before. I went home at the end of the day and recorded the news about the crash from every channel that had it on that evening. Stevie lived and died The Blues.
This brings back so many memories I was finally going to see him in concert at the kern county fair on sept 27'th I probably cried for a week. I t would have been the best concert I ever saw because many have said he was at the top of his game, when he died. One day im going to visit his gave and put a pick on it Rip Stevie.
yes it was stevie's night!! the baton was passed from eric to him...great show he played unbelievably! soooo sad to this day the greatest blues rock guitarist ever....
It seems like all my favorite guitarists die an untimely death, from Jimi Hendrix to Paul Kasoff to Randy Rhoads to Stevie Ray Vaughn to Dimebag Daryll. Well I feel sorry for Joe Banamassa!
From Bakersfield, Ca. I called my sister Karen, in Petaluma, Calif.,, she answered crying he's gone .. we had ticket's for the bakerdfield gig, which Stevie, stage left ;0(
Not only did this amazing singer, guitarist have the looks, his exceptional talent couldn't be beat!
I remember the day he died.... News came on as I was driving home with my daughter. Broadcaster announced that Stevie Ray had died in a helicopter crash. Needless to say, I had to pull over to the side of the road. I couldn't drive anymore. My daughter and I still talk about this.
Anyway, Stevie Ray's music will live forever. What a huge loss to his family, his band and to his fans. RIP SR

I've been lucky enough to see many of the 'greats' in concert & meet some. Hands down, most amazing concert, bday & surprise rolled into one was when my Dad got tix for Stevie Ray,backstage passes, pics, autographs, etc, for my 15th Bday, & Stevie Ray's 30th. No more SRV bday concerts, but a copy of one of the pics taken of me, Dad & Stevie Ray Vaughan, AND still having my amazing Dad..........priceless.
I love Stevie's smile in the background of the credits at 5:42. Just showed you how much life he had in him. We all miss you here on Earth Stevie and the love you passed our way.

HvyWeight 2 months ago
@HvyWeight Oh hell yeah. Also there should be a real good quality hollywood budget movie about Jimi Hendrix. WTF how on earth hasn't there been one. Even Stevie would have said the same. But yeah, i remember the same day, time and exactly what i was doing. Holding a welder in my hand at my engineering job, and listening to the radio. I stopped and didn't do any more work for the rest of the day. None! Rock On! And now i own a SRV guitar and a genuine 64 vibroverb amp. funny that. wink:-)

TheWheelman1970 3 months ago

No, actually most people there said Clapton downed SRV that night in playing. They liked to compete with each other with their different styles. Eric was devastated when he heard the news :(

If you listen to clapton's playing now he has a lot more of Stevie's chops in it. Both great guitarists and fans of each other.

I should also ad that my brother passed away 12 hours before Stevie. It was a really fucked up weekend. He died around 1PM on Aug 26. I believe it was a Saturday. While mouring our loss, a family memebr came into the room and said that Stevie had been killed.
jtgdot73 3 months ago
I have been there to that grave. In 2007 I went to the SRV remembrance ride and concert. I was guest of Cutter. Stevie's manager. The day of the show myself and 15 made others the trip to Laurelland cemetery.I stood at the grave with his old friends and fellow musicians. I'm just a fan, I always knew I would go there, but I had no idea it would be like that. I was driving. Before we even got out of the car i Had a stream of tears rolling down my face, it was unbelievable. Thank you Stevie.

A sad, sad day. I did a gig a few miles from Alpine Valley in 2001. When I played "The House is Rockin" the reception was so poweful and heartfelt I broke down and cried onstage. You know what, I was not ashamed to do so!
roymack1 4 months ago
I still know exactly where I was when I heard the news... I was a kid, just learning guitar, and I came in from doing chores, and mom met me at the steps.. she said "Something is on the news, about a guitarist killed in a crash" I asked who it was, and she didn't know.. then I asked "Was it Stevie Ray Vaughan?" and she said "Yeah, that's the name... I don't know why I had to tell you, but I just felt like I had to"... I ran inside, and stared at the TV in disbelief... my world was crushed...

this was hard to watch. It still hurts so much, I am so blessed to have seen him so many times. spinmonkey4401 4 months ago
God Bless, my brother.

RIP SR
