Personally, I would most definitely say Feuermann was one of the greatest cellists to reach my ear. However, I would not say he was the best cellist. I would not say Yo-yo ma or Rostropovich are the greatest either. I don't really think there should be a ranking within these cellists. Or any cellist of that matter. These great cellists are all great because they please the ear. There is no best of this ability.
can you sense something which goes and plays beyond his actual cello performance sound? this is something indescribable, as if he puts a living soul into cello. simply magic!
You may not know Marechal, D'Archenbeau (Flonzaley String Quartet) and others - all wonderful. Yo Ma-Ma and even Rostropovich not in the same league as Casals, listen to early Casals, not the late recordings. BTW, please give up trying to convince me that the transitional and contemporary players are as good or better than the old guys. I'm set in my ways and can do without a deluge of these attempts to influence me. I really appreciate your interest but please stop. Thanks
Oh no! I guess any opinion that disagrees with yours is wrong by default. I have ears, have played on stage with Ma, have heard a good deal of Rostropvich (with 2 "r's") and have heard many, many recordings of earlier string players. As far as I'm concerned, the only line people cross is attacking the people who comment rather than the subject matter pertaining to the posted video.
@Lukecash12 -If you knew what you were talking bout-you would not dispute that fact.Heifetz who he played with for many years,and Artur Rubinstein called him the best ever cellist. Few kf any ever disputed that fact.

@Lukecash12 -Rostropovich was in Emanuel's league,but only Casals compared..Both Heifetz and Rubinstein who played and recorded with him said that he was the best that ever played the cello.
What a cellist, I don't believe there has been anyone since his death who has matched his technical facility nor his ability to sing with the cello. This is an absolutely unique sound which we may never again encounter...akin to Heifetz on the violin.
I`m sure we could have, but nowadays people are music, both composing and performing, why not stick with the good old forumla that works? ( Cello is the sound of perfection isn`t it? :)
I've wondered about the lack of scratching on the old recordings. I mean by the cellists, not the surface noise of the recordings. Sometimes I think maybe the lack of high end may have masked a few flaws...but I don't know, when you hear all the other technique of someone like Fuermann then you think maybe it's true that he really didn't scratch. Antonio Janigro also made a beautiful recording of Brahms Double Concerto. (with Jean Fournier vl.)
The old school string players just did not scratch. No bow noise was a prerequisite for professionals. Listen to Kreisler, Thbaud, Primrose, etc. Other than that and much better tone, better rhythm, better pitch (usually perfect or very close), and much greater musicality old school players are pretty similar to those of today.
The photos are a very nice touch. EF was one of the numerous great artists whose life was cut short for tragic reasons. Had he lived longer...who knows what sort of music making might have transcended the millenum?!

Where can I get the score for this? I'd love to learn to play this on my own cello.

Feuermann is THE KING of the cello. A humble human being, and always an honest interpretation- very different to alot of the bullshit around today.

@trackguy1
ehh... I would say Yo-yo Ma focuses more on pleasing the ear, Rostropovich is far more technical, he values authenticity over aesthetics.

The greatest cellist that ever lived without any question! Well him and Slava. The world can do without every other wannabe soloist.

The great Feuermann all the way. make the cellist of today looks very dull.

you know, I agree with most of it, but never in my life would I put down Rostopovich or Yo-Yo Ma. You really crossed the line there.

hilarious. Thank you for correcting my mispelling of rostropovich. I am aware there are two "r's".
Simply put, I'm not going to bicker with you, so have a good one.

@2ndviolinist Rostropovich with 2 "r's"... and 3 "o's", as well.

The most sublime cello tone there is- no other cellist has been able to make the cello sing like this this.
His technique is faultless and he makes the most virtuosic music seem effortless.

if you really cant find one you could just derive the melody from the piano score. or even make an arrangement yourself lol :-)

Feuermann--the scratchless cellist! A joy to listen to and a consummate artist. Many thanks for this upload.
For those who may not know it, there is a brilliant recording of him and Heifetz playing the Brahms Double Concerto.
