that was great and sounded amazing i think i preferred yours too the original, i do love this interlude but do find that after the filler that already came on side 3 by this point you are just thinking GET ON WITH IT!!!, coming from someone whos favourite records of all time are Tubular Bells and Tales from Topographic Oceans!!!
Thanks for you're positive comment ;-) And me too, I simply love "Tales from Topographic Oceans" (another monster album full of layered Mellotron sounds), as well as the first three records of Mike Oldfield. Just recently I bought the new mixes of "Ommadawn" and "Hergest Ridge". The first has become extremly transperent now, and that's nice, one discovers hidden instruments :-) While HR loose a bit of it's densed sound quality as it falls apart into separate layers. IMHO :-)
@Thomasooo2003 my only big criticism of Mike Oldfield is that the performing on his records is sometimes not so great, especially on Hergest Ridge where some of the timing on acoustic passages are cringe worthy to listen too
That's true. And maybe that's a reason why I don't think that the new mix of HR is in general better. The complex sound falls apart into the seperat lines, and now you can hear all the lines much better, but you can also notice all inaccuracy of the performance. What do you make with the intro flutes? I always thought they are a bit out of tune, but now it's even more obvious. BTW, some days ago @ holiday I went to Kington, Hergest Ridge to walk around there & listen to MO! ;-)
@Thomasooo2003 haha that sounds like a great pilgrimage!!! and i havn't actually heard the new mixes the only version i have heard of Hergest Ridge is the first CD issue that i think we purchased in about 1989(?) so it probably has some form of remastering on it but nothing that ive noticed which effects the opening compared to the LP
pilgrimage... yes indeed :-) I was curious how much the remote village and surroundings had an influence to the music from this period, and, when myself listen to it exactly there, if I may perceive it different. Well, not so much, but it was great to walk around on that hill and listen to HR and Ommadawn.
The HR was mixed first time in 1974 (with more details and instruments) and then later in 1976, with some instruments completely muted (snare drum, spoon...) All LPs and CDs
...since 1976 have the new, "slimmer" mix – as Mike Oldfield commited that this should be the definite mix. Well, till this summer, with the complete new mix, with modern digital technology that helped to make it more transparent. This 2010 mix is more like the original from 1974, but still different. Some guitar parts are very harsh in the front that you might never have noticed. Ommadawn more or less the same. The first time I notices where he used spinet and banjo ;-) Great
Hyardacil...I agree with you one trillion percent.....it was always one of my favorite sections from the LAMB album (along with Hairless Heart). There is just something so mesmerizingly bewitching about the mellotron choir sound!
No Mellotron without violins :-)) And, to be honest, the pipe organ isn't very good. Only the lowest octave sounds nice (fat bass pedal!), but it's a bit out of tune recorded. It's not that good for chords. Don't ask me why they have managed to record an organ out of tune... Anyway, it's good to mix the violins with the pipe organ.
I do like the M400 Pipe Organ but the MKII Organ is actually a Hammond Organ emulating a church organ. The violins are one of my favorites (pure psychedelia) because you can acheive some really stunning sounds. The sound of the Mellotron almost makes me cry! (probably because i can't afford one) and i'm not just quoting Porcupine Tree! A truly awesome instrument.
Great Demonstration We Can See How Much that this "Short Interlude" As You Said It Was Really a great piece of keyboard it Was and Still is it.
I've Got a question : Do You Think You Can Play "Riding The Scree" and The Cinema Show Solo? I really like to hear it from you with your gear that is close to Tony......
Riding the Scree? Cinema Show? Never played it, yet. But I think it will be possible to find out the chords and lines. Some parts of the Cinema Show are pretty fast, so there's need to practice :-) What I am not sure about is the way to record it, pehaps with backing from the record? But then I would just double the keyboards. Are there are recordings minus the synth/mellotron tracks around? A great idea would be to cooperate with other musicans who could record the guitar, bass, drums first!
Sure I can. If you can send me a video of your performance, I can seperate the audio and use it as a single track in Logic, adding my instruments, mixing it and sync it later to the video(s). It's the same I did with "Entanglad" — recording first the guitars, the bass synth, then the rest (Melloo, solo synth). Would be fun to make a recording all across the pond, but there is need for a guitar & drums also!

Hi
whats sounds do you have on your Mellotron?
mangabassman2 2 years ago
One tape frame is the standard set: flute, 3violins, cello
the second one has church organ, 3violins, 8choir. So the violins are on both, but they are the most used Mellotron sound, and so do I :-)
Thomasooo2003 2 years ago
cool you've got more than one! My favorite tape set would be Flute, 8choir and Pipe organ!

you lucky you have that mellotron...
i've also seen your entangled video. They both are great!
Genesis still live in our hearts! keep on playing this music!

I've always thought that this is one of the most beautiful (if not the most "beautiful" track) in the whole album. The choir is gorgeus.
Could you please tell me the chords for the choir theme? I'm having trouble figuring them out. They are soooo gorgeus.

You really got yourself a real Mellotron???
Damn I envy you... ;-)
