I love how at first it seems like his playing isn't that clean when he's figuring out his parts, then he starts recording and just tears it up. The ol' bait and switch.

There's one thing I particularly love about this video: André is sometimes critizised for his lack of shredding - on this version of the Wheel of Time solo we see that he easily -can-, but just doesn't want to most of the time. Compare it with the final solo in the song: It's got almost no shredding. Because he just considers it not appropriate for the song. That's what makes a real musician.

of course most of the solos in metal are composed and not improved. metal is very similar to classical music. metal guitarits dont only use pentatonic notes, but much more difficult scales,higher tempo,...

composed solos are much more better if you want to tell a story, in my opinion, and improved solos are better if you "just" like to show a lot of emotion.

in fact i like both ways, but concerning metal i really like composed solos more than improved ones.

What comes out of their studio strives to be the pinnacle of music, and gets damn close. André WILL improv his stuff...LIVE. It's interesting, what he's picking right after the breakdown in the beginning sounds a lot like a blues/jazz bit. Pretty cool, especially since one of my friends is always blah blah blah about how metal guitarists can't play blues.
