Great video man! I just made my first batch of soap bait and can't wait to try it out! Its a little more crumbly than I wanted, but still goes on and stays on a hook quite well. Think I will add a little more water to the next batch to deal with the crumbling issue when I cut it. Thanks for posting!
I think maybe I heated up the Lard too much or the lye water was too hot when I added it to the lard. Also the Lard I used also had Hydrogenated Lard mixed in, Armor lard is the only kind available to me here. does that make a difference's?
@merismosman - I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't think heating either the lard or the temperature of the lye would matter. Once it starts to cool off, it should harden to the right consistency. I don't know about the different kinds of lard (the kind I used was Armor, but I don't remember whether it was hydrogenated. FYI, I set some out last night, so I might be posting a video soon of the results for our first trip out this year).
@merismosman - I don't know. Mine was pretty thin -- soupy-like. When it hardened to the consistency of mashed potatoes, I put it in the milk cartons.
@wyattroberts I did see on the internet that you should let your lye water cool to room tempature or it will come out too brittle, and when I used it it was so hot I had to use potholders, I think I will let stuff cool down the next batch I make, I don't mind experimenting cause lard is soo cheap.
@merismosman - did you use the exact quantities I specified in the video? If so, it should have turned out the same. If not, I don't know why it would have been chalky. It should be about the same consistency as a typical store-bought deodorant, but not quite a cakey...maybe a little more smooth.
@wyattroberts I can use it I just have to ball it up and warm in my hands and mold it around my #4 treble hook. I also wanted to share something I used last night and I caught 9 large channel cats last night in a small pond. I took chicken livers and coated them with garlic salt, really caked it on, then I let the livers bake in the sun for about 3 hours a side. that toughened them up a bit. then when I was fishing I tied the livers my hook using dental floss.
@merismosman - I tried balling it up, but that didn't work as well for me as having them in 1" cubes. That's good news about the livers. I've had good results with livers, too, but it's just so darn hard to keep 'em on the hook. Maybe I should try treble hooks, too.
@wyattroberts Cooking them in the sun with garlic salt toughens them but the key is to use some thread and tie them to the hook, tight, they will stay on for several casts
@wyattroberts there were about 6 people fishing there and I was the only one who caught anything, 9 big channel cats in less than 2 hours. I am gonna try to use the soap and see if I have results like this.
@wyattroberts you say you cut them in 1" square ive never tryed this but iver herd of it and it sounds like a good idea for yall to put them in a ice cube tray. im more of a carp fisherman than a catfisherman but goodluck man.
Hi I live in the uk like the vid can u catch wels catfish on this bait and can I use caustic soda which has 98% sodium hydroxide in it thanks in advance
After all is said in done in the video, you say your gonna puttem up.the only problem is you dont say where your going to put them(fridge, cabinet, etc.etc) can you tell me??
The reason this bait works is because catfish love animal fat (lard) and is also why Ivory soap also works. I'll have to try this. Great video, thanks, man.
why don't you just use ivory soap? my dad and i used it for years. only thing you'll catch is catfish. no gar, carp, turtles,...etc.
just warm the soap in the sun and cut it with a cheese slicer, use a toothpick to make a hole for a hook to get through and you're done. i liked your video.
Hunter, most of the catfish we have in our lake, which is where I fish, are blue channel cat. We have some nice-sized ones, too, some at least 6-7 pounds.
We have about a 30-acre lack, with mostly blue catfish in it. Hopefully, within the next month or so we'll start setting out trotlines again. I'll post videos when we do.
is this safe for our lakes? just wondering if we will end up killing our fish and plants in our pond

This is a great video.
But next time instead of having children help him (Lye is very caustic) he should just call his brother Darryl and his other brother Darryl.
Thanks for the useful info.

@wyattroberts I noticed that your lard was creamy white I heated mine until it was totally liguified, that was was probably too much.

Dude , don't put lye in the water. or feed it to the fish you gonna be eating. Just use plain ole Ivory soap. It really works.
tater2675 1 year ago
@tater2675 There is lye in Ivory soap too, little did you know. :P All soap is made with lye.
