People nowadays forget one of the key things about all types of music. Less is more. I think Duke did more with fewer notes than anybody else would, especially compared to guys nowadays who are always trying to over complicate things. Keep it in a context and make the notes matter. Its not just a key or just a fret.
When talking about drum solos many people forget the greats of the jazz music scene and only focus on rock n roll. Rufus Jones kicked ass on the solo. One of the best drum solos in history
Apparently Speedy had a major drink problem and was replaced on "And His Mother Called Him Bill" and the Second Sacred concert by a white drummer Steve
If the drum solo is insane, then I´m insane too, because I love it. Great, great bass. Duke shows he was an amazing piano player. THIS IS A MASTERPIECE!!
@alisanchazz Check out his handiwork on Ellington's Far East Suite, especially the opening number, "Tourist Point of View". This very rhythm section drives the hell out of the orchestra.
Duke was a subtle, humble, stylish, impeccably tasteful pianist who really knew how to shine in a small group setting while highlighting the talented musicians who played with him. Money Jungle w/Roach and Mingus is fantastic. Wish he'd made a dozen more records like this.
Any fan of this video and Duke Ellington in trio and small combos in general should check out both Money Jungle (Blue Note Reissue CD) and especially Piano In The Foreground (Columbia Reissue)
The, beg. /middle of this is reminisent of The Shepard w. lamb / woodyard ,similar jam ,chord 's but Time's a bit different AND room for musical RUFUS who still blows away Blast beat and non drummers, Get some Help,..
Segun dice al final del video se llama "on the fringe of the jungle". Igual está escrito a la derecha del video, donde está la info del usuario. Respecto del baterista no logro encontrar uno con ese nombre. Tendré que seguir buscando.
Not just great players but great communicators as well. They play with a clear and common purpose and it sounds so much better to my ears than so much of todays piano trios. Magnificent.
Jo Jones, Philly Jo, Elvin, Harold, and here "Speedy" Rufus Jones (also with Maynard's band). Both of these guys fit with Duke than Mingus and Roach ("Money Jungle") or Elvin and Garrison (the Coltrane-Duke session). Look for a youtube vid erroneously labeled 1940 for Duke the florid piano player. Later he could sound Monkish in both touch and use of time. This guy carries on in the Blanton tradition--as did Aaron Bell and Joe Benjamin.
Of course they fit better than Mingus and Roach on Money Jungle; these guys were part of his regular band, the Mingus-Roach thing was a one-off album done in a day. It's a gratuitous comparison.
Thank you very much for posting this great video on Youtube!
Just a suggestion : I think your video could be much more heard and seen if you would put more elements in the tags such as the title of this piece, the album from which it comes from, and the names of all the musicians.
is this available on cd?

With Duke, you don't listen to music, you watch notes gently blown by the breeze on canvas.

I LOVE Duke´s minimalistic sound. All us piano players often tend to play WAY to many notes. Not the Duke though.

Sometimes with Duke's composition and allowances for young cats improvisation - you get a sense of what Jazz and what it will become.
mifleegler 1 year ago
The key to being a great player, a great communicator is to listen to the other cats in the group. All of these cats are very good listeners.
