  • i absoutely adore this guy. i love how he's so shy and soft-spoken, his voice is like a whisper. quiet people so mysterious... i always want to know what's going on in their heads, and when they do speak they really make you listen. it's just such a nice change from loud, obnoxious people.

  • Why does everyone act like they are personal friends with the musicians they listen too?

  • @hviers Watching youtube videos of them! Duh!!

  • This guy couldnt interview a fucking cabbage hes awful. If you ever seen anything of Ray he says there should be a wall between him and the audience where he entertains them. He's not some gushing x-factor reject trying to impress hes an actual singer/songwriter who can take his place among the greats.

  • He said he rarely gives interviews because he's a very private person and doesn't communicate well with other people. I assumed this was just something that an artist says to add to his or her mystique......... then I saw this interview

  • Ray and Amos Lee need to go on tour together. It would be so amazing!

  • @BruceJC75 Seen them on the same stage at DMB Caravan in Chicago last year. I wish they would have added Joshua James to the mix.

  • @BigJimDeeDaDee That would have been sweet! I my opinion those guys are some of the greatest song writers of today!

  • The guy giving the interview looks like hes got a lip in...

  • hes o the coke cain big time his eyes are darting more than a chipmunk on speed

  • Interviewer just forgot to sneak in a deep breath every once in a while. Other than that, very insightful interview!

  • I think this guy is just shy he seems like he wants to talk but is shy ,,i no coz im a bit like this and i seem sumtimes like im being a bitch wen really i just cant talk coz im shy :)

  • reminds me of a therapist asking a patient who doesn't want to talk questions

  • Omfg... Nothing was wrong with the interviewer.. His job is to ask questions that will inform the audience, as well as to lighten the mood... he did this. Ray is obviously just a shy guy, which makes it that much harder on an interviewer.

  • Most awkward interview ever. I love it.

  • The awkward moments are often the best ones.

  • reminds me of George..... my guitar gently weeps George

  • why does he always have a beard, is he smokin sumthing lol

  • Ray is notoriously shy he doesn't even really communicate with the audience at most concerts he just kinda keeps his head down and sings and plays his guitar which is totally fine by me I don't go to concerts to listen to an artist talking to the crowd, in fact some artists should take a tip from Ray in that respects but I dont think the interviewer is bad I actually think he is doing a good job getting Ray to talk

  • This interviewer is horribly nervous. Maybe he should find another day job.

  • they're both bad. the interviewer because he keeps commenting on his own questions; if he would quit being so insecure about everything he would have done fine. and mr. lamontagne because he isn't a very good conversationalist and doesn't provide answers that could lead to other questions.

  • Ray is very articulate, unlike the interviewer. Whatever his name is, he's the one that makes the interview awkward not Ray. He's asking some of the right questions but not in the right way. Shame, a missed opportunity.

  • @geekygirl111 Out of interest, how is Ray particularly articulate? He's a good artist but, to me, his sentences seem detatched, and a bit ponderous.

  • @mahogonywhisper ponderous is good, don't you think? I like that he takes his time to answer. Giving thought to the question. The interviewer makes me feel uneasy to be honest. If he had been interviewing me, I would have probably walked off.

  • @geekygirl111 Hmm.. no, I don't think that ponderous is good. Ponderous makes you lose interest in what he's trying to say, and because his sentences are so fragmented, I must be honest in saying that I'm not sure what point he's trying to make.

I think the interviewer might feel a little uneasy at Ray's sedateness... imagine trying to be an interviewer, talking to someone who just doesn't want to talk.

  • bahaha. awkwarddddd. "no, it's not true"......"not true...."

  • JESUS CHRIST HAS RISEN

  • Stomach is closer to the heart than the throat. That's why he sings through his stomach :)

  • This guy is so bad at doing interviews! Ray gave him major side eye.

  • this is the worst interview because its real no bullshit ray your a classic.

  • I have watched this too many times, but it's a great interview!

  • Thank you for sharing your gift with us !!!! You are amazing!

  • Now how he got started now that is a love story! He said he played at a festival and somebody heard him sing.

  • lol worst interviewer in the world

  • I think Ray isn't used to talking much and the interviewer is used to hearing more.

  • "I don't think you can separate yourself from your life experience ... it makes you who you are" ... just so true Ray ... please keep writing these fantastic songs!

  • GOD!

  • He doesn't seem like he was wreckless! He voice sounds different from the way that he sings!

  • wow ....that was great ....thank you for sharing

  • I hope he never changes. I love his "stillness."

  • This interviewer is the worst I've ever seen. What an idiot! Love Ray!

  • "Monotone"

"A single unvaried tone of speech or a sound; having a single unvaried pitch; property of a function to be either decreasing or increasing"

  • This interviewer isn't very good.

  • hes like a lost puppy. amazing artist

  • He reminds me of John Myung in personality.

  • I liked the part when ray was answering that one guy's questions

  • Comment removed

  • Why does the interviewer keep looking at the fucking camera? Ray, you rock!

  • GOTTA love his attitude :-D!! And it's so funny in the end "nice to meet you" "Nice to meet you too" NOT! Haha :-D. I love that man!

  • Oh! I am in love!

He reminds me a lot of Daniel Faraday on Lost.

  • he's adorable

  • I have days were I don't want to talk to people too.... and I'm an electrician.

  • @pazzman1974 Me too...just kidding I'm not.

  • his music puts me to sleep and his interviews put me to sleep...i love it!!! :D

  • i love how ray just straight up tells him: no, that's not true; you're wrong. LOL

  • This interviewer is terrible.. He is the most uncomfortable person I've ever seen

  • "i have days were I dont want to talk to people at all.....like doing this interview."

  • I thought the interview was pretty good. I got an idea of what the artist is like, and how he came to be where he is. That's what I was hoping to find out when I clicked the link.

  • The interviewer is fine. Ray is making him feel unfomfortable, it's easy to see. Ray is a great artist but a really difficult person to interview and keep the conversation going with. He might be fine witht he people he knows but the interviewer clearly struggles to get anything out of him.You can put as many minuses as you want but you're a very bad communicator yourself if you think Ray is talkactive. He is great as I said and it's normal to be reserved but it doesn't make the interviewer bad.

  • @SlippinPegs True enough. However, independent of Ray, being a bad interviewer makes him a bad interviewer.

  • @SlippinPegs He's not talkative, but he is a good talker.

  • @SlippinPegs The interviewers questions: 1.) how did being dragged across america effect your music? You can't get much more broad than that with a question, he would be there for hours answering that. 2.) The album is called Trouble... Were you ever in any trouble?.... Really? You think that's a good interviewing question? Again, can't get much more broad and not specific than that... he'd be there for hours answering that. 3.) so, how did you know people liked your music?... Really?

  • @bryan3184 Also, artists that arent fake dont practice interviews. He did fine. You picked the most mundane retarded thing to comment negatively about and get thumbs up. Ridiculous. Common.

  • the interviewer is horrible...he needs to learn his facts about the person he's interviewing before he talks to them. but it's cool hearing Ray talk about his music. I love Ray LaMontagne.

  • Really bad interviewer.....

  • yeh not too much chemistry going on here at all!

  • what a moron that interviewer is.

  • would someone shut this jornalist up ...anyway .///I really apreciate his music !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Such a hilariously bad interviewer.

  • i think his soft spoken nature is what seperates him as a musician. what an intriguing and talented individual!

  • This was an interesting interview. I dont like the interview he didnt flow well with his questions and Ray is being who he is a shy, amazing creative person who expresses himself more through music than talking. And I truly understand that because I am the same way. Everybody is different and we must take them for who they are and embrace the beauty of each individual.

  • this bloke interviewing him is a fair dinkum wanker... how the *&^% did he get the gig???

  • speechless

  • Does he (Ray) still in Maine?

  • My friend's professor is a good friend or Ray's and I may be able to meet him.

  • I think the guy that is interviewing ray probably doesn't appreciate his music. it also seems like hes just going through the motions of the interview.

  • Does he remind anyone else of Elliott Smith in his demeanor?

  • I have a feeling that around 1:50, the interviewer realizes that interviewing Ray LaMontagne might have been harder than he thought.

  • This remind anyone else of the Joaquin Phoenix Letterman interview?

  • It drive me mad when people say Ray is grumpy or unprepared etc. He is a musician that makes real music. He isn't a public speaker nor does he want to be. The people who say shit about him like that are probably in awe of the likes of Lady Gaga who is only after fame. I'd rather never see Ray talk and keep getting absolute perfect music than listen the every1 else talk how great they are and make woeful albums like gaga etc who are just cash cows for record companies. 90% of (and I use the fol

  • I feel like the interviewer mainly did written research on Ray instead of actually being interested in his music or previous interviews he has done.

  • beautiful voice, beautiful person.

  • What a horrible interviewer. Too bad

  • LOOOOOVE the new album!! Haven't picked it up yet? Well you're totally missing out :) But you can listen to the whole album on the First Listen section on NPR . org Enjoy!!

  • God.

  • Being an introvert myself, I can't really relate to some of the comments. We're used to people thinking we're arrogant, grumpy, etc etc etc... Unfortunately it only makes it worse when people are like that but meh c'est la vie.

  • "No, that's uh.... that's not true"

I'm surprised he didn't cut that hahaha

Regardless, his speaking voice is as beautiful and as mellow as his singing voice. I can't believe that he had never done it before, he seems to be a natural.

  • he kind of looks like Richard Manuel, who he was influenced by as well

  • Where did the trouble come from? Aw shit. lol. I'm sorry I can't lol

  • Ray Lamontagne.. just love him.. the most touching lyrics, songs, music..

  • i love ray!!! he's quiet, sweet, honest and a BRILLIANT musician.

  • honesty is a nice quality

  • Has no one heard the saying, " If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all." ?

  • Good interview. Stephen Stills comes off very well too. Ray is a good bloke

  • one of the only interviews with ray and its a shitty australian wimp interviewing him..

  • at 1:53 to 1:56 the interviewer completely stubbles on his words! So funny!!

  • Ray is one of the few.if he had been in the 60s there would be no bob dylan.bob is one my favorite singer song writers so that says alot.Ray is a music man. Most of us who play music and write our own life stories into song are the ones that suffer with what music can really do.record or not he will never stop making music he cant

  • I like this guy, so honest and sincere.

  • Decent interview, but the interviewer is annoying...he's either got a defective bottom lip or a huge dip in there, which is really gross.

  • Ray 70% recovered.........

  • Since when is being "shy," "reserved," or "quiet" considered unacceptable? We can't all be flamboyant people. Take him the way he is,because without him we wouldn't have his exquisite music!

    Rock on Ray [=

  • @UkeElaina Exactly lol. I love when I watch interviews and see singers or actors who happen to be shy or even a little awkward. I find it extremely endearing. Not everyone is going to be loud and out there. Sometimes it seems like introverts live in an extrovert world and are forced to conform to their standards. Screw that, we are all different and people need to accept it.

  • @UkeElaina I don't think it is unacceptable, but I yust think it's a pitty. There no reason to be shy everybody yust needs to himself.

  • @UkeElaina ah mate thats so true can only count on one hand the people with the same restraints as ray and these to me are so much more interesting and mestyrious with beautiful music.

  • His tone and demeanor remind me of George Harrison.

  • this is a painful interview to watch.. im exhausted

  • other than his nervous movements, he seems pretty calm and easygoing.

  • Legendary beard.

  • So arrogant people aren't authentic? I don't understand how humble means authentic.

  • @theGreatAddo are u retarded? reread your statement and think about it, unless you are a cretan you will figure it out.

  • @thekohlton Wow, some of the most brilliant musicians are arrogant. Beethoven and Mozart come to mind. Either I am retarded or you don't know what authentic and retarded means.

  • @theGreatAddo arrogance is somthing to hide behind to shield yourself from feeling self concious being a brilliant musican has nothing to do with being authentic my good sir but in the case of ray he puts his emotion on showwcase and reddily excepts his critics instead of saying fuck off i kno what i am. see what i mean. thats what being "real" means

  • @thekohlton You are completely wrong. A brilliant musician is creating music that is authentic to human emotion. I can hear the pain that Beethoven was feeling when he created Moonlight Sonata. To me, being authentic and real is not following trends. Trying to create music to make money is fake like most music today. You can be arrogant and still not trying to copy trends. I find Ray to be real just as much as Chuck Berry who is an arrogant person.

  • @theGreatAddo perhaps you are correct i didnt see it that way before, but put so elegantly i now see the light and thats funny cus on youtube most of the people that reply to somthing i say are idiots that are acting like trolls and the conversation almost always end witha fuck you. i respect the fact that you calmly stated your point and didnt take the debate to the gutter. i commend you sir.

  • im terrible at interveiws. I could never answer these questions on the spot. Ray did well imo

  • I agree with you lot ,youve said it all, Ray revealed reluctant relevations right royaly .

  • What a lovely, genuine, shy and gentle man. Wholly sincere. A world apart from the PR polished and insincere question answering of schooled products of corporate heavy record companies. People who suggest he is not a good interview subject should realise that THIS is what it's all about, not people who are rehearsed to within an inch of their lives and are told what to say...

  • This was great, he seems to be a very genuine person

  • i would prefer that he NOT 'rehearse' the answers. I like these candid moments.. its these where you can see him being real.

  • Since Ray is obviously very shy, he should request to see the questions that he will be asked beforehand. That way he could somewhat rehearse his answers. This makes him look very unprepared, eventhough he looks like a nice person. Bob Dylan has the same problem in being very shy. But Ray just needs to be in more social situations to get used to public speaking. In his bio it says he lives in Maine. That shows how alone he wants to be. I hope he makes a lot more music inspite of shyness.

  • It's the interviewer who is lacking here .... painful to watch his preconceived notion of how things are going to continually crumble.

Clearly Ray has much to say, he just immediately recognizes this is not going to be a conversation or an interview; rather it's a guy turning what he's read and heard into questions ... and he got the info wrong several times.

  • Why do people act like being shy is a disease or something? It's just his personality. Nobody acts like being a loud dumbass is a disease. I've been bugged about being "too quiet" my whole entire life. It's irritating to see ppl belittle him because he's brilliant and he doesn't have to scream it in ppl's face. He just is.

  • @themarycity i agree

  • @omanitshann glad there are other people who agree. "quiet" people are awesome. it's a well kept secret. :]

  • @themarycity right on!

  • he's so sweet and shy,

    (:

but he is definetly not an interview type of guy.

    haaa

  • that's what makes him great.

  • wonderful interview ??? This is PAINFUL to watch. Tremendous talent but must have demons we will never know about. Watch something tragic happen with this man. Or I could be way off base and this gut is incredibally shy.

  • A Wonderful interview. Ray is "ultimately" a man who loves to make music and made a career out of something he truly cares for. . . Inspiring

  • Ray seems like he's close to panic attack.

from 12 to now I have troubles and probably for the rest of my life.

  • lol, seems that way doesnt it? haha. He's a great guy though.

  • Interviewer is a wanker.

  • Authentic human beings generally don't like to talk about themselves.

  • @pupplesan oops--I meant to THUMBS up that! Won't let me take it back! You're comment is right on!

  • @pupplesan emo alert

  • @pupplesan

    wow ok

  • @pupplesan that's jsut pure bullshit

  • @pupplesan authentic doesn't have to mean shy and excessively humble. you can be someone who strives for honesty and integrity without being the "fans" idea of the tortured "pure" artist. people see in artists like this what they want to see. I think Ray is an amazing artist, a truly gifted songwriter, I'm just not sure you have to be a complete introvert to be an "authentic human being"

  • @pupplesan

You nailed it on the freaking head, good sir.

  • @pupplesan What makes someone an authentic human being? I think that every human being is authentic. Maybe the word your looking for is honest?

  • @pupplesan LOL @ "authentic". God, that is so tacky.

  • @LardInATubeSock hahah true

  • @pupplesan Authentic human beings? Wtf is that. Not that I'm unfamiliar with the terms, but that statement is just wrong. We're all uncertain of ourselves, more or less. What differs is those who talk about it and those who don't.

  • hey the guy is a great singer-song writer it doesn't mean that he is outspoken like canye west

  • he's a real person not a made up britney - like one. i loved this interview i wanted to hear how Ray felt... not a bunch of made up bull..

  • hahaha terrible interviewer!!! hahahaha poor guy , sooo awkard hahaha

  • i'd like to see you whiny dingleberries interview him. you get some insight to ray, what the hell is an interview supposed to be for?

  • Damn interviewer is scared out of his mind, like he's speaking to a god or something...haha !!! Ray you're freaken amazing, went to your concert 2 weeks ago and it felt like a dream. But it felt like it was one of your moments where you don't wanna be on stage, because people piss you off!:)ha,, but you made us laugh with all your funny comments:)..... One thing for sure, you sounded even better live than on your albums. ( <3henrey nearly killed me)brilliant job.... Everyone go see ray:)

  • Ray is amazing. Met him in Kentucky once. Very humble.

  • The interviewer seems nervous. I can't help but getting the idea that the interviewer is a stoned student and ray la montagne is giving him an oral exam..

  • that was the most awkward interview i have ever watched that guy couldnt have asked any worse questions

  • I'm sorry, but I don't know who Sara and Missy are. Could someone tell me plz?

  • Missy Higgins and Sara Blaska

Missy is amazing! I've never heard of the other gal.

  • @Juliebrd5

The womens name is Sarah Blasko.

  • he farts at 8:50

  • lolz It did sound like it though huh? Ray is awesome!

  • hahaha best part of the interview

  • This interviewer sucks. MY GOD. Embarassing. He should be fucking fired. What a joke. Ray is great. :0)

  • He is so quiet. I love the music he creates and his calm personality. He seems to be a deep thinker. Maybe from all those years of reading books. He is a great artist and creates master work. "Be here now" Absolute best!!!

  • dont we all 12-24

  • Hmm he does seem 'troubled' These two guys are such polar opposites. I don't think the interviewer is used to having anything other than light-hearted conversations.

  • YeoOOOOnnnnnN

  • You know, people really piss me off. Some people have nothing better to do than spout out childish bull shit . it was a frigging interview .

I like Ray and is music.

Seems like the interviewer needed to do his home work. ray ya did well brother

  • dull dull dull...nice mullet on the ausie dude!

  • they both were not good. Ray is so bland. he seems troubled still

  • OMG! SO FUCKING BAD INTERVIEWER! HE CAN AT LEAST PLAN THE QUESTIONS BEFORE! xD

  • Oh my god! It's not a freakin' dissertation! It's an interview. Can you say "Spontaneous!" You freakin' Nazi!

  • could the questions be any worse?? oh my

  • the interviewer is terrible. the questions, the conversation...he was just dropping the ball all over the place
