Michael Des Barres is and always has been an idiot. Detective is/was way overrated, Chequered Past was an embarrassment to all involved and the less said about Power Station the better. Emitt deserved better than this...a brilliant man.
Love Emitt's music. This is the first time I've ever heard the man speak. This interview was bizarre. It's safe to say he is still an enigma. And call me crazy, but something in his mannerisms and appearance remind me of Jay Leno! I hope life has been good for him even without the level of fame and recognition he deserved.
Emitt does indeed come from a musical family, probably alot more than he is aware of because that musicality comes from his father's side of whom Emitt rarely associated with and hasn't spoken to since he was a wee lad. According to what his cousin Kathleen has told me, Emitt has both cousins & one uncle in particular who-like Emitt-are self-taught and play several instruments brilliantly and who write too. Every few years the Rhodes clan get together for a party that lasts DAYS, one LONG jam!
Michael does a poor job here of reading Emitt's reactions. Emitt's comment about his snoring was in response to Michael's stupid comment about half the audience possibly wanting to sleep with Emitt. Also, that crack wasn't in keeping with the kind of person Emitt was/is as an artist:he was never one who went about bedding down his fans like Michael is known for. Emitt was in it for one reason:his genuine love of MUSIC, not money, fame or sex.
Emitt looks a bit uncomfortable. Share the damn mike!! It's good to see him again but with a beard. But the interviewer is kind of right, Emitt is Emitt and no one should be comparing to anyone. He's not trying to be anyone else!!!!
Yes, a terrible interviewer. Emitt was and is a brilliant musician. I've never had the chance to meet him, but I knew some of his family. I really want to see "The One Man Beatles" movie but have no idea how to get it. Does anyone know if it's available on DVD?
Hmmm, would I be as hard on Michael Des Barres as other people here? True, he did very little to get Emitt to open up and probably embarrassed him in the process, but parallels can be drawn: Michael's band, Detective (with Tony Kaye, formerly of and soon to be back with Yes) could not get out of Led Zeppelin's shadow, despite having some really solid tunes (especially "Help Me Up"(?) and "Got Enough Love"... The latter even made it to WKRP as Scum of the Earth!) and having Led Zeppelin themselv
What a horribly blown opportunity. Des Barres seems clueless about Mr. Rhodes, and how to read him, and how he might have been able to lead him into a comfort zone where he would have opened up. Even the shyest, most self-effacing artist will talk about themselves and their work if they feel comfortable.
Oops! I meant to say that his musicality comes from his FATHER'S side, although to a lesser degree his mother's side of the family too were involved in performing, mostly as singers. His father's family were musicians.
Wish they had gotten someone else to do this interview. This guy had the nerve to tell the audience not to ask Emitt any stupid questions when he was the one making all the stupid comments. Emitt is in a class all his own and the whole McCartney comparison should not have been brought up. It is obvious that Emitt is a shy and humble person and the whole interview format should have been done differently. Love your work Emitt!!!
Michael Des Barres is a real dumb asshole, poor Emitt is screwed over again, sadly! The love and respect people feel for him is genuine, hope it got through, in spite of Des Barres
I hope that Emitt can handle the pressure of his re-imerging fame.I guess what I'm really hoping for is that maybe if he sees how much people love him and his music that he will be more motivated to create. Most of his stuff is so heartfelt.god knows, we need that in these days and times.
@Daburcor The Emitt Rhodes Band has been hard at work on new music for a while now.the latest is that within the next couple months - 2-3 new songs will be released to get a feel on how its going to be accepted by the public

Poor Emitt reminds me a lot of Brian Wilson in the mid 70's after he came out of his seclusion.

lincbond442, agreed, what you said.
A deeper, more sensitive interview would be welcome.

I think what Micheal meant to say was "Is it EVER too late?" otherwise the audience's affirmation might appear to be insulting to poor Emitt!
