@guydanieli No. you just have to buy a whole new bit of 'memory' every ~ 11 minutes. Also, film does not retain the blacks as well as many digital cameras.
We are at the point where film and digital are decided by artistic choice and prefrence. Not technical superiority
@Dizzi800 You did not understand me. Film is better . It's the reason we use film for archive. Also the picture is much better than digital camera. Video looks fake and flat, even with a million $ camera. You will see the 4th Pirates of the Carribean..There is a big difference. And as I said before, in a few years, you will need another camera, Memory cards are deteriorating fast. and you cannot restore a cards like you restore films. I am a Pro DP for more than 40 years with Tonino Delli Colli
@guydanieli If I were to go out and buy an Arri Alexa tomorrow, I would not 'Need' a new camera in 3-4 years. would there be one with more technically superior capabilities? yes. But the Arri Alexa has a dynamic range that can go beyond film. Is there the same feel? No. That's why it is a creative choice. Digital is more jumpy, as the shutter speeds are digital, without the nice 'fade' from the out of focus shutter gradually exposing/blocking the frame...
@guydanieli ... Though the upcoming sony F65 will have an optional mechanical shutter.
Digital has it's uses, as does film. Could you shoot Black Swan on a digital camera? No. There were some scenes in it that used digital camera's (Low end ones at that) but a trained eye could see the difference.
Memory cards are cheaper than film, and last a lot longer than film, and you can restore digital just as well as film within the limitations
@Dizzi800 But dude that is the whole point! Films are made for an audience of non-filmmakers and they are the only ones that need convincing commercially. No questions asked from the billpayer and you're on to a winner...
@guydanieli For run and gun: digital rules. It hold the shadow detail better, even lower-end cameras like the Canon 7D. But nothing, and I mean nothing, can beat film's highlights, the way they roll off into being blown out, the way they hold onto the highlights. The closest thing is the Arri Alexa but it's not quite there.
Back to your 'new camera every 2-3 years' The RED epic has a resolution greater than film (5K. 35mm film is genrally scanned at 2 or 4K) which is great for VFX etc. The Arri Alexa is lower resolution (2K I beleive?) but has a much higher dynamic range (Excluding the HDR mode) and with the right lighting and color grading, I can guarantee you that it would be impossible to tell the difference when finished on a 35mm print.
@Dizzi800 By the way, what's happening to the HD cameras, Red cameras etc...Now we have the Alexa and tomorrow we will have something else...I stay with film like Steven Spielberg told me a few years ago
Very tempting. Still, analogue has some magic that digital just doesn't have. I hear it in my synths, my valve stereo, taperecordings and having shot 16mm 35mm and a lot of digital it was always the same. On digital you spent so much time on postproduction and plugins trying to give it some vibrant liveliness that it simply doesn't produce. Film just has it and it will survive and have a comeback like all of the other high quality analogue media.
@ArtyomZakharenko maybe 10 but not 20 just watch carefully all and every media is gone digital the walkman is dead now it's mp3s vhs is dead now it's blue ray and even full hd streaming netflix and others plus projectors and tv's are going to be 4 k and digital !! even hard drives and every other media is going into the cloud computing phase film is heavy expensive and inefficient and not practical so just set back , relax and enjoy watching carefully what\s gonna happen in the next 10 years

@Dizzi800 When you shoot on these digital cameras the whole point is to not see anything on finished 35mm print.

Every time a new digital medium hits the market, we're being told film is dead... remember VHS?
Know that you'd need 12K of information if you'd like an image as rich as 35mm film.
The key difference is character really, which film has and all digital media are missing.
All pro's are going back to film.

Even YouTube's hefty compression can't hide the dynamic range and color gradation that could soon kill film cinematography.
