I wondered at the time what kind of message this idiot was sending to the Soviet Union. It was played out in spades when they invaded Afghanistan. The moron made us look weak. There are ways of setting a national agenda, and calling Americans spoiled and selfish....and depressed...was not the way to do it. This speech sealed his fate 16 months later.

That's where all those roads highways and state parks came FROM. Jimmy Carter was recently ranked among the Top 10 U.S. Presidents for moral authority, and listening to this speech, it's easy to understand why.

Carter was a fiscal conservative and a social evangelical, on those issues he was more conservative than most of the Republicans today. Although his foreign policy was very liberal because he believed in peace. He took over at the end of a terrible era: Vietnam, Opec's oil embargo, Watergate and the start of Islamic radicalization in the middle east. He wasn't a great leader but he gets more blame than he deserves, just like most presidents take more credit than they deserve .
