I wondered at the time what kind of message this idiot was sending to the Soviet Union. It was played out in spades when they invaded Afghanistan. The moron made us look weak. There are ways of setting a national agenda, and calling Americans spoiled and selfish....and depressed...was not the way to do it. This speech sealed his fate 16 months later.
And now Obama has called America "soft". Welcome back, Carter.
He was warning us then and its coming true now.People forgot about the great depression and FDR bringing us out of it by taxing the rich 90%. Yes 90% tax. That's where all those roads highways and state parks came FROM. GOVERNMENT JOBS PAID FOR BY THE RICH MANS TAX DOLLARS.And the rich did just fine because everyone had a job to earn money and buy things with. Most homes only had one parent working. The mom got to stay home. Dads retired at 60 with full pensions.WE ARE ALL READY SCREWED!
wow, im sorry, so were people deaf, dumb, or ignorant to take this message as an attack on the american people? its a shame reagans showmanship duped everyone
Carter was a fiscal conservative and a social evangelical, on those issues he was more conservative than most of the Republicans today. Although his foreign policy was very liberal because he believed in peace. He took over at the end of a terrible era: Vietnam, Opec's oil embargo, Watergate and the start of Islamic radicalization in the middle east. He wasn't a great leader but he gets more blame than he deserves, just like most presidents take more credit than they deserve .
"...set an agenda for 1980"????? Actually, the American people set the agenda for 1980 and that gaenda was for Jimmy Carter to get crushed in the Presidential election. This ill-advised speech gave Reagan one of the classical political lines in history.
"If it's a definition he (Carter) wants, I got some for him.
A recession is when your neighbor loses their job,
a depression is when you lose your job,
and a recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his job."
@cnsrvtvsrule why not just shut the hell up...nazis like you will rue the day you were born soon enough. Because when they get through fucking us over, you are next. Too bad your ego controls your common sense, you're a short term thinker and just part of the mob.

@avid3000 Ignorant? How? Please explain. Please point out one fact that I posted that is not FACT. Just one.
Please explain to me why Brazil is allowed to drill closer to American shores than American companies are allowed. Please explain why Cuba and China can drill closer to America than American companies can. Are you capable of answering even that?
@cnsrvtvsrule The sad thing is, I don't even think you know what facts are. Just go back to your fox news and pull the covers up over your head, it's clear it's too late for you.
@avid3000 But, you still can't point out even one item that is not factually correct. Obviously, you disagree with every point I put forth. I am simply asking for just one, JUST ONE, point that you can either disprove or demonstrate as a NON-fact. BUT YOU CAN'T DO IT. Just like a typical ignorant brain-washed libertard That is why it was so easy for Jim Jones to lead you clowns into the jungle, for Charles Manson to get you fools to kill and go to jail for life, and for Hosedbama to get a vote.
@avid3000 It's not my fault that you are an idiot. It is not name calling when it is an obvious fact. @cnsrvtvsrule Wow that was a whole bunch of invective that said precisely nothing. Cutting Government and taxes will make things worse and it is not too late, let us do what President Carter said we should. If you love America, do what he said in this speech and we will save it.
@cnsrvtvsrule Oh and drill baby drill, what you are saying is not true, and you got your wish. Deep Water Horizon is a classic example of why things get bollucksed up when you don't let the Government run things. As for China and Brazil that is simply not true. Brazil is on the Eastern, not the Northern part of the South American continent, get your facts straight.
This guy was, is , and always will be a whiny little bitch. He sounds just like Hosedbama. What Carter refused to accept was that the only crisis of confidence the American people had was in him. Just listen to this fool, he sounds just like Hosedbama. Carter might as well have said "don't go to Las Vegas". This clown is as dumb as Hosedbama, both too weak and stupid to direct this nation on a positive and prosperous course.

Maybe if we did what he said and banded together we wouldn't be almost to the point of no return.... Jimmy I am sorry no one listened then, but i am listening now
Most Americans don't like to be held responsible like adults but the same people hate being talked to like children... Time to grow up. Shit it was time to grow up back then.
@myguiltypleasures1 Carter put up solar cells on the White House. He wanted 20% of our power to be solar by 2000. When Regan took office one of his first acts was to take them down! We send a billion a day to the terrorist in the middle east for oil.
He couldn't do it alone. Congress had to get in line.
@TheTrueHolyDarkness That's not true, I know I - myself am but there are plenty of people far older than me who did live through his administration and think the same. But I don't know why I'm telling you that you'll just say that they're socialists or something, right?
You have to feel the burn to pull the bullet out of you arm.
@TheTrueHolyDarkness What's your point? You're saying that by asking Americans to take responsibility for the well-being of their country, he made things as bad as they were? Don't forget the time prior to Jimmy Carter's arrival was pretty shoddy as well.
Americans love preaching "personal responsibility." We just don't like living up to it.
Jeez, or if we'd done the public transit thing more extensively. . . . but in a pragmatic way. Bush's Am. with Disab. Act KILLED many public transportation agencies. The ADA required every bus have handicapped access. That KILLED some pub transit. Also, unionization of pub transit workers is an albatross.
This is a visionary man. Every word he says, Spot on. And he's got the courage to call for actual people to participate in solving the problems, unilke the snake oil salesmen whos in office today who tells you not to worry, they'll fix it. Reelect Carter, he seems to know whats going on.. he did even 30 years ago
Ask your parents what they thought of Carter as president. In my opinion he was a great president and has always been a great man. Many people have a different perception of him...a perception the nutcase republicans gave him.
@Blastabola Yes, this is what Obama wants to say and the direction in which he suggested to take the country before being elected (he spoke openly about ending the war, decriminalizing marijuana, free health care for all, which is why the people elected him), but he's "wanted dead or alive" by the KKK and the capitalistic Republicans still insist on having the final word on his suggestions. Pussy or not, he's under a looot of pressure. But I do think he should step up for the people.
@vv901vv901 If Obama does "step up", he's a dead man, and he knows it. The Elite who killed the Kennedy's, MLK and gave us such greats as Reagan, Bush (1 and 2), and Clinton will never allow a President to empower the American people. That's why Obama won't be the FDR we were all hoping he would be. If he tried, he would be shot. Given the political and social climate, Obama's assasination would rip this country apart. There would be blood in the streets. The President knows this. It's sad.
One more thing. Just as US oil production peaked in 1970 at 11 million bbl/day (we're now down to 7m/day), GLOBAL production will eventually peak if it hasn't already. If that happens before we get serious about shifting to renewables in a big way, get ready for pain that will make the current economic downturn look like the good old days. The ONLY reason the global economy has been able to expand over the last 150 years is BECAUSE daily production has grown fast enough. When that stops...
Our oil production peaked in 1970 as predicted by M. King Hubbert. By 1973, we realized it. We entered a new phase of American history, but no one told us until this speech. The demand destruction of the recession gave us temporary relief.
Reagan walked blithely away from any hint of concern for our long term security in exchange for a short-term return to the idea that consumerism and self-absorption could offer us a stable economy. He sold it as patriotism.
True. But where do we go now? We are so far in the weeds, that we don't know if it's day or night. How do we take back our country and ourselves? I wish I had the answers but even if I did. Would anyone listen? Thanks for posting and thank you telobilly for summing it up so accurately.
@gcrockwell Hmmm...I happen to like capitol hill and you have to respect the process. I know how it is though. You can become jaded by the system but you realized there are over 600 representatives on the hill representing their different interests. It's not an easy system to get through and with good reason. The only thing I don't like is the party politics between democrats and republicans. Who cares about party lines and winning elections. IF you think the bill is good vote for it.
@LAX324 I liked the hill too. And I know first hand the need for pragmatism in politics. However, at the end of the day, I became disgusted at the lack of real leadership or concern for quality legislation and oversight. Even you have to acknowledge, a lot of our government is being run by 20 somethings fresh out of college with no real experience in life or over the things they cover for their bosses.
We did it to ourselves. Every time gas dropped, we ran out and bought big SUV's and trucks. The way this country sucks down resources is appalling. We have become a debtor nation of consumers on the brink of irrelevancy in the world.
@telcobilly Yeah Im pretty sure the couple miles to work and back really effected the nations oil resources. Not. Industrys, companys, construction, take up the resources. How many times did you watch this, brainwashed already? Its not the governments fault its yours, because of confidence! B.S. And then he plays the god card wow. What a looser.
@telcobilly we do listen but its listening to the sellers of crap not to people trying to help us survive. They can't give you the american dream but they'll sell it to you.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A very weak and rambling speech from a weak leader. Thank God he wasn't in charge of the 80s - in retrospect Reagan's election really was a providential act for the US. Sad to see Mr Carter now - a former President of the United States talking to a bunch of terrorist killers like Hamas, Sad indeed.
Wow! God bless him! he spoke of real challenges and what was waiting 30 years ago and what did US do? They didnt handle the truth, voted against him and for something that made so much problem for todays USA! almost 12 trillion in debt! stretched military! 50 million under poverty line! 10% unemployment! Dollar in freefall! dependent on foreign oil (70%) and a Empire in decline! Will US do same mistake in 2012?
Definitely would've voted for Carter! In '76 AND '80!
