phil lesh is a rare species of mankind i ever seen.... or heard ,for that matter?! what a smooth bass line ...jerry "dont fly away, cuz i luv what i love and i want it that way>".......mikey killin it!
what makes the Dead different from other bands is their focus. I feel that with some bands they are not entirely focused during a live performance. Yet, it seems to me that the Dead are in the zone when playing live. I bet that if there was a fire they would continue to play. I wish that there were more bands today that got into the zone when live. Please come back Jerry, we miss you.
That's Mydland at the end, guys. The camera just focused in on Phil because he is a bad ass. If you listen (and know) that's keys making the high sound at the end.
Fucking amazing music. Phil is just going nuts, Jerry looks good and is rocking out, he hits this difficult song pretty damn well (especially for this stage in his life). I love it, this is an absolute treasure.
6:27 listen to Phil jump the gun too early and Jerry look over at him. Been a head since the mid 80s and when you get the virus in you it's a complex thing you can't explain to "normal" people. Over the years I myself have found myself saying "God they've been playing these songs X amount of years HOW DO THEY STILL FUCK UP ALL THESE CHANGES AND LYRICS!" etc. I used to love when they got the teleprompters and they STILL fucked up lyrics! It's all in the charm of the band, outsiders don't get it.
@whambola I've been trying to play this for 30 years, and I'm finally getting close. I don't know what it is, I can play anything, but for some reason, this for me is like Rachmaninoff's third concerto.
not my favorite version, but if i had to pick a favorite dead tune it would be this one, although i am a huge fan of the early dark stars and the other ones..anyway
always amazes me how Jer remembers all the words! Been workin on this tune and posted my version as a "video response" - what an amazing piece of music this is!
Watch Jerry around the 5:30 mark. Not only does he play it, he deconstructs it, sounding almost like he's playing it reverse, and making io look effortless...
great video. I was at this show. Angelemerald, who never saw the Grateful Dead, and didn't know who Jerry was until Warren started playing the Dead has no idea what she is talking about.
They open with this Golden Gate Park free show with Jefferson Starship 1975 Oh My!! we went to Winterland for a show the night before we rocked and like it it alot!!
Well I am a fag and I love this song. I'm pretty too.
Great lyrics and music. Great intent. What more could one want from a song? A great singer. This is obviously not one of Garcia's best performances. He is off key often. Stumbling on the guitar work. He must have been dragged out, dug up and torn asunder. My heart breaks and my anger rages.
the then knickerbocker arena, now the pepsi arena, in albany, ny. i walked there from my house int the student ghetto...
best show ever (at least for me). they left half the good tunes off of "dozin at the knick" for reasons i still dont know. this help-slip-franklins was monumental...
I know there is no best song. But to me this is the best song. It is special to me because 30 years ago when I discovered LSD it was a very magical time. And this was a magical song for me. The acid was strong and pure. It was the best time of my life. I cannot even begin to describe how good the trips were. I wish it was those times again. The best I heard this song I was blessed for the once in a lifetime chance to have front row exact center. I can still instantly travel back there.
Good comment. Interesting to get this LSD connection confirmed. It has always seemed logical to me that Blues for Allah has a special psychedelic quality. Not much of a user though, in fact, I've never even heard this on anything...

This venue will forever be The Knick. Best run of shows ever! I thought i heard that the Sinatra concert was canceled so this is the actual Grand Opening! i may be wrong about Sinatra but it seems right. This show was Pure Magic!
franky did open the place a week b-4 ***,.. think the knick thought it was just another sinatra show,..to say they were not ready for us ,would be a huge understatement,..does anyone remember what happend?**** the inside of the knick is purple,...hehe
What a glorious couple of minutes of 'Slipknot' ! I LUV that the camera guy focused on Phil, the interplay between he and Jerry and Bobby is what the good ol' GD was about for me. The way Phil's bass intertwined 'in on under and through' Jerry's lead was something no other band could or ever will do... That, with Bobby's choppy Casio chords and Billy and Mickey somehow making rhythmic sense of it all is the magic of the Dead, and something most people will never understand.
i have chills...been lookin for this on youtube for as long as i known about youtube...i cant believe its 18 years ago...walked from my house in the student ghetto.....
