Cheevers had a wicked mask with all those stitches. For a lesser known mask, Bunny Laroque had a cool mask when he was on the Leafs. Love the old school and modern day masks. So many cool paint jobs! Anything but the 80s, where a lot of guys rocked the regular player type helmet. BORING!

At around the 1:25 mark shows Doug Favell as both a Flyer and Maple Leaf. I recognized 2 different Bernie Parent pics as well, one as a Maple Leaf wearing the old skeleton mask and the 2nd as a Flyer, oddly enough, with his mask up. I say oddly because for a while, Bernie never removed his mask on the ice.

The first was Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons who was indeed a pro goaltender...he wore the mask in practice but no one wore one in a game situation till Jaques Plante.

@TheDaleDenton The 2nd mask (clear plastic) in the video was an experimental mask that was given to Bauer and maybe other goalies to get their opinions.It failed.Looked dangerous if the plastic broke and got stuck in your face & head.Fogged up.Poor idea but on the right path.There was a Japanese goalie that wore a cage mask in the 1936 olympics.

@Squall17x Well they were safer than not wearing anything and I miss the late 70's some of the guys really had some iconic masks. I hated the Bruins, but Cheevers & the stiches on his mask is great. The Dryden bullseye. Gratton's roaring lion. I read somewhere that the best protectionis still just a helmet with a cage, but let's face it they are boring. The maks of today allow goalies to put a bit of their personality into it.

You're right. Modern cages are a whole lot safer. I wouldn't play with the mask Gerry Cheevers, for instance, used to wear. But older masks from the 70s and early 80s looked more menacing, bolder. What we gained in safety, we lost in coolness...:)
