Well I watched a video about this and many of L.A.'s buildings will crush people. The freeways will have all the cars driving in it and the cars will fall too. Over 5,000 people will be killed, you will have a 80% chance of dieing if you are in a building or near those skyscrapers. Anyways, the "big one" was 25 years OVERDUE, it can happen any day at any time.
@smashbadger3 5000 people dying is horrible, but 5000 people dead in a population of over 20 millions people mean that you WILL have a chance of surviving... and it MIGHT not happen the way you saw in that video you know, many skycrappers were designed to resist the strongest of earthquakes
well I live in LA and as of right now im trying to prepare an earthquake kit for my family, but damn my Californian laid back attitude I'm still thinking "meh if it happens, it happens.."
to all the people asking what your chance of survival is...your chance of survival is completely dependent on your level of preparedness. go to shakeout.org and look up Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country to create a disaster preparedness plan and a disaster preparedness kit!
I live in elizabeth lake wich is on the fault about 6 miles from lancaster, in fact it's on kiptree drive right below my house...please tell me I have a chance of surviving??
@unikino ??? A tsunami for Japan would not occur from a break on the San Andreas fault line, or any other fault on land. Unless Cali fell into the ocean..and then, whooo weeee! (Which Cali wouldn't.)
They say the shaking from this will last two minutes. If you've never been in an earthquake, twenty seconds seems like an eternity! I can't even fathom two minutes worth.
This is why they invented seismic engineering, fellas. Might wanna think about getting your shelves fastened to your walls, and do some research on the earthquake rating of your building, and on ways to improve it.
You can either pray (that is, try to make it God's problem...and considering what happened to all the God-fearing souls at Banda Aceh, good luck with that!), or you can prepare with science and planning (that is, study, and do your best for yourself and your families).
dude that could happen, and is going to.. at some point... the chances of it happening in 1 million years are the same is it happening tomorrow..its been a long time since we had our last one that was huge...and the videos only a 7.8... an 8.8 is 10x as powerful as that ....imagine a 10+ bye bye LA..
people who says they are fucked cause close to these areas.... it sure as hell is scary and you BETTER be very well prepared for it... but dont say your fucked... a big earthquake does not mean you will die and have no houses anymore... not necessarely anyway, lol
You ever heard about supershear earthquakes? Google it and go to the link that says "Deadlier than Deadly" Read about this and let me know your take, this can make for a potentially much worse disaster. I would describe it in detail but 500 characters is not enough and I would have posted the link to the article but it kept giving me an error. Supershear earthquakes are when there are super S waves involved (S waves on steroids). I wish I can say more.
According to historic accounts, the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake that occurred on the southern San Andreas Fault produced strong shaking that lasted for 1 to 3 minutes. It was a magnitude 7.9 earthquake. The shaking was so intense that the Kern River turned upstream. The Los Angeles River was also flung out of it's bed. At the fort, people were knocked to the ground and large trees were uprooted. because California was so sparseley populated in 1857, there were only 2 reported deaths.
@DarkOmenDKA Geological composition of the ground as well as the fact that there are a dozen faults (which doesn't include blind faults that we can't see), so all those faults would be set off and cause the area to shake for a while
detectors need to be set up at the starting point of the quake for alarms in impact cities. Saftey first! people really need to put this kind of saftey measure into effect, i came up with this concept on my own, but what matters is that others can put it to use! i mean you dont get an opportunity like this often.
It's interesting you refer to "seasonal" events. I recently suggested to a student regarding tectonic plate movements, a theoretical "tectonic season" correlating to the interior shifts of magma and the polarity displacement and angular movements of polarities. It seems to fit nicely with this.
@tookietookie123 yeah, it makes sense, because heat causes things to expand [like the earth.. and the rocks and plates] which causes the earths plates a lot more pressure than usual.. so yeah D:
actually, larger earthquakes would seem to be seasonal, they tend to happen most around fire season between the end of Spring and mid Fall. :P I don't know if there is any correlation but all the big ones I've experienced are always around that time of year. there have been huge ones in winter though, like the northridge quake. so my theory is not that accurate. I think the one's in Summer and Fall are more memorably impacting though because of the brush fires along with them.
Well, if they "seem to be seasonal," then it's just your imagination (or rather, the human tendency to find order among chaotic events). No, there is no correlation between earthquakes and the seasons of the year. Trust me; disaster is my business. I do this for a living.
I can say that I am very concerned and ready to move my family out of California we live on the fault. But I know that my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ can save me and if I die I will be with him in forever and wont have to worry about this world anymore. He is judging the earth, just open your eyes and see what is going on around the world. Remember John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, He gave His only son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life." Amen!
Keep in mind that this video does not account for the impact of either soil quality or climate or environmental fire loads. In addition to the damage caused by the earthquake shock you must also account for the impact of the ensuing fire conflagration.
Soil consistancy and strength will impact eaarthquake shock wave transmissions along the wave front plane or pathway. Soft soils and wet soils transmit shock energy more efficiently and more quickly than do hard soils or stone.
This simulation does take into account soil type and depth, based on version 4 of the SCEC community velocity model which gives parameters such as density, S-wave, and P-wave velocity at a given location (lat, lon, depth). Waves are then propogated through this velocity model, generating synthetic seismograms. That is why you see such strong and long shaking in the LA and Ventura basins.
KingRobinho, it's a prediction. No one can know exactly; not even to the year. It's mother nature and it's unpredictable. What sucks is that I can't read this or interpret it. I can assume it wouldn't be good though.
@michellemag83 Yup you guys, I live, well, notice my handle, we'll get some rocking and rolling, but you guys will get some shaking and baking, some serious ground movement man, I pray for everyone who lives north
Thats not true at all. Scientists say there is a 99% chance it will happen within the next 30 yrs. Unfortunately, I live in San Fernando Valley, in other words, I'm fucked.. :(
we are likely to get a massive one here in vancouver also.. havent had a major earthquake for 1500years, there have been smaller ones but the "big one" will cause a tsunami.. im worred since vancouver is so close to sea level. damage and death will be insane, not many people are prepared either.. no earthquake kits, no extra medication stored, no gun to protect their posetions. going to be hell, government better be fuckin quick to help too.
just keep praying that you just keep getting little ones frequently, each small one relieves pressure giving a big earthquake less odds to be extremely strong. but if you had almost no earthquakes since 1500 years ago, then fuck id move lol. weve been getting alot of small earthquakes her in socal, and im hoping that's all we keep getting
@ChollieD Actually what the So Cal earthquake people have said, is there's a 99% change of the "big one" in the next 30 years. They've been saying that for about 60 years now. :) As far as I'm concerned, the longer Mr. Earthquake waits, the better. :)
@chaoscleaner Well, I'm a couple of professions over from geophysics or seismology, but it's absurd to say that a massive, rare event is next to certain to occur in such a short time frame. I can believe a 7.0 is 90% likely to occur, but a 7.8 is more than 6 times as intense as a 7.0. The 1989 World Series Quake (aka Loma Prieta) was a 7.1, while the 1994 Northridge quake was a 6.7.
So again, I don't think the people saying a 7.8 is 99% likely are real scientists.
@ChollieD I was just saying what I heard growing up. No matter what year it was, it was always "the big one within 30 years. If they gave a mag. I don't remember. However I just found this - (2008) from - scec.org/ucerf/
".....The likelihood of an even more powerful quake of magnitude 7.5 or greater in the next 30 years is 46%." (There's much more of course. No room here.)
According to a video I saw in Earth Science a few months ago, L.A. is like a basin--we're surrounded by mountains that cause the shock waves stay here because they have no terrain to expand to but the ocean. It was confusing but w/e. Don't worry, your stuff is not the only stuff that will be screwed, so will our stuff in this shabby 1970 apartment.
Yeah. I live 25 minutes away from downtown l.a. (by freeway). But it'll suck even more if: 1) I'm in my dorm at 'LA and not home and 2) if my dad is at downtown working when this happens.
hope that you and your fellow residents stay safe. I feel very sad for you all as I watch this, but I hope for the best, for we never know how soon it will hit, but I will still be around to comfort people. I'm beginning to cry myself, but I am still remaining strong.
This isn't funny! Just wait till it happens! Will you be laughing then??? Wait till you are watching the news and seeing people dying and if you are there, you would not dare to laugh! Never screw with mother nature!
Most Likely...Hope it doesn't happen when im crapping in the bathroom or taking a shower...Oh my gawsh...
But i do think one thing...:Staying in a swiming pool might help but only if you know how to swim...Lol if your under a swimming pool when it happens water just splashes on you and you just swim away...
I hope that you and your fellow residents stay safe. I feel very sad for you all as I watch this, but I hope for the best, for we never know how soon it will hit, but I will still be around to comfort people. I'm beginning to cry myself, but I am still remaining strong.
Please do all you can to love and live life the way it should be lived. Be alive in the current moment you are in right now, for you may never know when this will happen.:'(
Dude this is fkn scary as shit, just be prepared with food and all other stuffs and you'll be ok if you're smart..the drill is tomorrow not the earthquake though.
What are u supposed to do with an earthquake this big i mean its probably gonna bring down houses, hiding under a table isnt going to help much, this is scary =(
I recently attended a meeting in Northern Ca. And it will happen! I encourage you to be prepared by starting a disaster kit. You can get info on items to get from the Amewrican Red Cross.
This earthquake (or a similar one) is really going to happen eventually. It could happen an hour from now, or a century from now, there's no way to predict exactly. It is overdue now, geologically, but there is still no way to tell exactly when. Could be today, could be in 2100. The shakeout page has more info on how to be ready.
before i thought it will not happen at all and it was just a guess. but now i am convince that it will happen. but i doubt that it will happen anytime soon, im guessing it will happen around 5-50 years from now.
Another one that is just as deadly as the San Andreas is the Elysian Park Fault that sits right underneath Dodger Stadium. I live right on the Verdugo Hills Fault; would rather worry about earthquakes than Hurricanes or the like.
I was wondering what the name of it was. I saw this video on Earthquakes about a dangerous fault under Downtown L.A. and another in the Los Feliz area. I'm trying to remember what they were named as well
Probably the Los Feliz is the Elysian Park Fault. The other worrier would be the Newport/Inglewood fault. I think it runs along Wilshire Blvd, thru Inglewood, then under Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. And of course the Northridge fault was actually just a guess on someones research project for their PhD. They were happy but the rest of us in the valley were not!!. I guess until there is an earthquake, some fault types cant be predicted until they erupt and this gal was right on the money.
it probably is. Yeah, I remember the Earth Science teacher that I was a T.A. for said, "Wherever you see a street dip, that's a fault." It was also said that the San Andreas fault could trigger the fault in Downtown L.A. Btw, thx for the info I live 5 minutes away from Inglewood and currently dorming at UCLA which is fairly close to Wilshire Blvd. Something I have to be aware about. =/
Sorry, but if a strong one hits it doesnt matter where you are. I am not near UCLA and would be affected by the Inglewood and even more so by the Elysian. You have to have faith and pray and be prepared! You're in better shape than I am, I am in the valley, so anything goes. I was tortured with the Sylmar quake, worked @ Cedars for the Whittier quake and fell apart when Northridge hit :( Its worse when you have kids, cuz u worry for them as well!!
The one that goes under downtown is the Puente Hills Fault and I just posted a comment about it and I hope it shows because the last 2 times I tried it didn't show. This fault is much more dangerous than SA for LA. Google Puente Hills Fault and you'll see what I mean.
Not to worry. FEMA has millions of coffins ready to recieve your corpses and put them in an oven. See the government has everything covered. No worries, just go out and shop, watch reality tv and play your xbox.
um, what's the name of that other faultline no one talks about from the late 1800's quake that's due every 140 years that the anniversary of is this year (140?)
That'd be the Hayward. People talk about it a lot in the Bay Area. There was a major conference/drill/commemoration there yesterday, which was the anniversary.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah be calm, just cause the soldiers are standing by in the mojave near that fema camp and your governor is a nazi..there's nothing to worry about just screw everything down
Wow, looks so intense from that view. I am glad I am aware and prepared for the most part. I only wish others would take preparedness seriously to reduce injury & death. I am installing cabinet latches this week, I don't need my blender falling on my head or broken glass all over. Thanks for the visual earthquake simulation!
you gotta ask yourself one question; do i wanna be the person having to be saved because i didn't know what to do or do I wanna be the one who is leading the others to save?
This shows perfectly how ignorance is not bliss! This is a very serious thing that should be taken for what it is: complete and utter devastation. Be prepared or suffer the consequences of possible death! Do not cause yourself heartache after the fact and do something NOW to make sure you are PREPARED for a huge earthquake in one of the highest populated areas in the nation.
stop asking if you have a chance of surviving.. of course you do. Many people will die but not EVERYBODY... so of course yall have a chance..

Scientists never say that a 7.8 is 99% likely to occur anywhere, in any 30-year period.
You've totally been had.
ChollieD 11 months ago
@ChollieD Actually what the So Cal earthquake people have said, is there's a 99% change of the "big one" in the next 30 years. They've been saying that for about 60 years now. :) As far as I'm concerned, the longer Mr. Earthquake waits, the better. :)
chaoscleaner 10 months ago
@chaoscleaner Well, I'm a couple of professions over from geophysics or seismology, but it's absurd to say that a massive, rare event is next to certain to occur in such a short time frame. I can believe a 7.0 is 90% likely to occur, but a 7.8 is more than 6 times as intense as a 7.0. The 1989 World Series Quake (aka Loma Prieta) was a 7.1, while the 1994 Northridge quake was a 6.7.
So again, I don't think the people saying a 7.8 is 99% likely are real scientists.
ChollieD 10 months ago
@ChollieD I was just saying what I heard growing up. No matter what year it was, it was always "the big one within 30 years. If they gave a mag. I don't remember. However I just found this - (2008) from - scec.org/ucerf/
".....The likelihood of an even more powerful quake of magnitude 7.5 or greater in the next 30 years is 46%." (There's much more of course. No room here.)
Just info. :)
chaoscleaner 10 months ago
@chaoscleaner Thanks for the info. Those are the kind of odds and magnitude that my gut (which is infallible of course, LOL) tells me are reasonable.
Having grown up in Minnesota, we never heard 'bout no earthquake scares. It was those tornadoes you had to watch out for. Pesky things.
ChollieD 10 months ago
@brian92992 i live in ventura, if the quake happens along the fault in s.b. then im REALLY fucked.

WPHSBandGeek 3 years ago

I recently attended a meeting in Northern Ca. And it will happen! I encourage you to be prepared by starting a disaster kit. You can get info on items to get from the Amewrican Red Cross.

O.M.G!!! IM SO SCARED. A MAGNITUDE 7.8!!!!! But is this earthquake really is gonna happen or is there a chance? Please respond.
New023 3 years ago
This earthquake (or a similar one) is really going to happen eventually. It could happen an hour from now, or a century from now, there's no way to predict exactly. It is overdue now, geologically, but there is still no way to tell exactly when. Could be today, could be in 2100. The shakeout page has more info on how to be ready.
marymactavish 3 years ago
before i thought it will not happen at all and it was just a guess. but now i am convince that it will happen. but i doubt that it will happen anytime soon, im guessing it will happen around 5-50 years from now.
drumline4lifehr 3 years ago
Another one that is just as deadly as the San Andreas is the Elysian Park Fault that sits right underneath Dodger Stadium. I live right on the Verdugo Hills Fault; would rather worry about earthquakes than Hurricanes or the like.
campusqueen57 3 years ago
I was wondering what the name of it was. I saw this video on Earthquakes about a dangerous fault under Downtown L.A. and another in the Los Feliz area. I'm trying to remember what they were named as well
WPHSBandGeek 3 years ago
Probably the Los Feliz is the Elysian Park Fault. The other worrier would be the Newport/Inglewood fault. I think it runs along Wilshire Blvd, thru Inglewood, then under Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. And of course the Northridge fault was actually just a guess on someones research project for their PhD. They were happy but the rest of us in the valley were not!!. I guess until there is an earthquake, some fault types cant be predicted until they erupt and this gal was right on the money.
campusqueen57 3 years ago
it probably is. =/
WPHSBandGeek 3 years ago
Sorry, but if a strong one hits it doesnt matter where you are. I am not near UCLA and would be affected by the Inglewood and even more so by the Elysian. You have to have faith and pray and be prepared! You're in better shape than I am, I am in the valley, so anything goes. I was tortured with the Sylmar quake, worked @ Cedars for the Whittier quake and fell apart when Northridge hit :( Its worse when you have kids, cuz u worry for them as well!!
campusqueen57 3 years ago
The one that goes under downtown is the Puente Hills Fault and I just posted a comment about it and I hope it shows because the last 2 times I tried it didn't show. This fault is much more dangerous than SA for LA. Google Puente Hills Fault and you'll see what I mean.

me too do you think los angeles lives on a strong soil? not loose ones?
SupremeLSSJBroly 3 years ago
LA has different soil depending on the part of the city. Flatter areas are on weaker soils.

Not to worry. FEMA has millions of coffins ready to recieve your corpses and put them in an oven. See the government has everything covered. No worries, just go out and shop, watch reality tv and play your xbox.

um, what's the name of that other faultline no one talks about from the late 1800's quake that's due every 140 years that the anniversary of is this year (140?)
dellsprospects22 3 years ago
That'd be the Hayward. People talk about it a lot in the Bay Area. There was a major conference/drill/commemoration there yesterday, which was the anniversary.

yeah be calm, just cause the soldiers are standing by in the mojave near that fema camp and your governor is a nazi..there's nothing to worry about just screw everything down
dellsprospects22 3 years ago
Wow, looks so intense from that view. I am glad I am aware and prepared for the most part. I only wish others would take preparedness seriously to reduce injury & death. I am installing cabinet latches this week, I don't need my blender falling on my head or broken glass all over. Thanks for the visual earthquake simulation!

you gotta ask yourself one question; do i wanna be the person having to be saved because i didn't know what to do or do I wanna be the one who is leading the others to save?
pokerlad32 3 years ago
We are in grave danger somewhere in Anaheim if this happens.
RyokoFan290 3 years ago
i know! im really starting to freak out! i don't know if hiding under the table would be enough.
cheskins 3 years ago
this is intense, watching it is bad, imagine how bad it is in real life!!!!!!!! we really need to prepare!!!
TrustedadviceStudios 3 years ago
This shows perfectly how ignorance is not bliss! This is a very serious thing that should be taken for what it is: complete and utter devastation. Be prepared or suffer the consequences of possible death! Do not cause yourself heartache after the fact and do something NOW to make sure you are PREPARED for a huge earthquake in one of the highest populated areas in the nation.
pokerlad32 3 years ago 5
i agree, you know what happened last time, thank goodness not alot of people died that time
