I can't believe all of the established talent who acted in this film. The sight of Peter O'Toole, very obviously drunk, ascending a winding staircase as men are masturbating all around him, was too much. I remember that scene well because even HE couldn't help but laugh through the scene. Malcolm McDowell was crazy good as Caligula. Only other film from around this time that I'd seen Helen Mirren in was "Excalibur." Good movie, saw in early teens as it was among all the other vids at store
It may have been cooler for the intro, if they recited Caligula's words in Latin and had English as subtitles. That would have made it sound like an actual recording from the past... Ooooo...
Prokofiev's unsettling and sinister "Dance of the Knights" from Romeo & Juliet is a lot more appropriate for this film than Khatchaturian's "Spartacus"

I just watched the film out of curiosity, especially since I am a film major and heard so much about its production history. Although I can appreciate the intention of this project- to make a film that used a mainstream story with hardcore sex- the end result is pure unforgivable trash. No wonder everyone involved disowned it. The story is lost in a sea of wall to wall sex- most of which is just there for shocks' sake. Overall, this movie is not worth watching at all. 1 out of 10 stars
@filmfan09 For the time in which it was filmed its a curio piece, its meant to be extreme and make the viewer uncomfortable. I'd say its pretty realistic as far as displaying Caligula's insanity. True history was brutal and visceral, far from a PBS special.
They should remake it, only be less sex and promotion (this was Penthouse promoting there girls) and actully be a more true bio-pic to the crazed ruler named Caligula.
Not a bad movie, but it turns too much into a porno than a real film.Penthouse still to this day calls it the most controversial movie ever made. I disagree mainly because its just a long porn flick with a plot. I consider films like passion of the christ and a clockwork orange to be far more controversial.
this music ignites a bright fire within my soul, and i get a sudden urge to destroy humankind, and to rape and sacrifice a goat to caligula, the greatest emperor of antiquity.
Die Titelmelodie von Prokowiev ist ein Magnet, auch wenn Caligula ein, leider zu einer allzu gewollten soft Porno Verfilmung geratener Historienschinken, sein mag.
Caligula was perhaps one of the most depraved people in history. The scene where he raped the bride is based on a historical account where he also raped the groom. He also had sex with half the gladiators in Rome. This movie is nothing compared to the book 'Caligula, Divine Carnage: Atrocities of the roman emperors.'
Ugh... "Divine Carnage" is pure... Well, "Garbage." And these "historical accounts" are nothing but rumours and outright lies. We know NOTHING about Caligula, most of what we do is just "tabloid tales."
Did Caligula sip Catomite Cream from the Warren Cup, or a similer type of Vessel? Google "The Warren Cup" The Pestle with the Vessel has the Chalace from the Palace...the flagen with the Dragon...oh, forget it!
Me Too! I have a mint copy I found at a flea market in Jersey back in 1988. I been meaning to transfer it to CD for years. The disco song, "We Are One' is hilarious as it alludes to a sister being in love with her brother, as was Caligula.
Malcolm McDowell is one of a very rare breed of actor whose presence and voice trancend their role. Lawrence Olivier and Richard Burton can be counted in too.
I agree, it's underrated to some degree. The cast is great. The set's were nice. But the horrible editing sure fucked this movie up. The movie could have been greater.
The REAL Uncut Version is the 156 minutes that was released as "The 20th Anniversary Edition (Unrated)" I Happen to own it, is a decently enjoyable film, but not that shocking. READ MY IGN Review
