Tri-cones rule for acoustic slide. I owned and played a single-cone metal-body Dobro for years, and I thought it sounded good until I played a National tri-cone one day. I immediately bought the tri-cone and sold the Dobro. That was fourteen years ago, and I still love it. Of course, the National cost two and a half times as much as the Dobro, so it should sound astoundingly better, (it does).
@MrFranciscoFidalgo Use Open G instead of Open A and use Open D instead of Open E. Same intervals but two semitones down so you can just play the same thing but two frets higher (a slide from the 5th fret to the 9th would be 7th fret to 11th fret instead, for example). Much lower risk of strings breaking (since you are actually down-tuning rather than up-tuning) and pretty much zero risk of the neck bowing due to added tension.
It sounds like Open G tuning (D-G-D-G-D-B low to high, a.k.a. Hawaiian tuning or Spanish tuning), it can be played on a normal acoustic guitar as long as the action is high enough. Someone posted the tuning for an Open E (E-B-E-G#-B-E low to high) somewhere in the comments, but this is not Open E. Ry Cooder, Joe Bonamassa & Derek Trucks are good examples of guys that use Open E tuning. SRV used a hybrid Open E when playing slide, you can hear a huge difference because they're different keys.
The guitar behind him, the semi-hollowbody, is absolutely gorgeous. Can anyone tell exactly what it is? I think it's gotta be a 335 or 355 model, I think an Epi (335) but the finish looks damn good so it may be a Gibson...or maybe even a Sheraton?
It's a Tricone, the bridge of the guitar sits on three alumium 'loudspeakers', two on the bass side, one on the treble. That's what gives it such a rich, complex, beautiful tone. Most are made of metal, usually steel or brass, very cool guitars in every sense - you don't want to play one with your shirt off!
he used a gibson L-1, it's a parlour sized acoustic. they've reissued it as the robert johnson model. as for the strings, i'm not sure but i'd like to know as well...
of course they are steel. probably 13's. and in spite of the pictures, when you have to play without electricity, you might want a steel, or aluminum bodied guitar with a big speaker cone so people can hear you, unless you're actually in a parlour.
Ignore the comment from the fool who would have you tune your guitar in such a way that it might well cause your guitar some damage! The fella in the video has his guitar tuned to a Gmajor chord which is D,G,D,G,B,D. I use this one a lot and is a good one for slide. Have fun!
Negative. Come on in my kitchen was Robert Johnson's version of Sitting On Top Of The World. I believe it was either writen by or made famous by the legendary Mississippi Sheiks. (which that name was inspired by "The Sheik Of Araby," a popular book which was made into a movie at the time.)
Still dont understand why this is rated 4 stars WHY AAAAAAAHHHHH stop underating things like this!!! 5 stars excellent playing you should do some elmore james stuff id love to see that.
Thats real nice, you really know what your doing. That tri-cone's got a full sound,I play an old dobro different sound more attacking.Post more please...
