@RockerForLife74 Sorry to disappoint you, but the truth be told, it's neither. I just wanted show off my then "new" kit at the time, the background song isn't the original song I had picked , it's one of the many backgound tunes that YouTube offers. I wish that I had written the artist name and song title down but I didn't. I do have a couple of videos posted of me playing that kit, but I and the recorded sound don't give the drums justice. It is a great sounding kit. Thanks for asking.
@GretschBluezDrummer Alright. So let me ask you this... out of 10 what do you give the Gretsch Renown Maple Kit's quality, sound, and durability? I badly need an upgrade and Gretsch came to mind along with Pearl, Ludwig, Mapex and Tama. Which brand is the best and why? Sorry to throw all these questions at you but I really need some advice on what to pick out. Thanks for your time.
@RockerForLife74 I can't answer that within the limited space that Youtube gives. Which brand is best? That is in your personal taste. I give Gretsch a 10. These days, unless you are going to pay through the nose for a top of the line kit, any of the mentioned kits will do the job. You left out several brands, why? If it's a visual thing, finish or wrap, then I understand. Go visit your local drum shop and try them out, that's why they're there. Hope fully you have one close by.
@RockerForLife74 Don't overlook used drums, you can save a lot of cash! Let it be known that an inexpensive kits can sound great when tuned correctly. One bit of advice, if you plan on gigging a lot, get hardware that is light in weight. Your back will thank you for it! . Check out Gibraltar hardware. They have some awesome setups. Same goes for your throne, get a good one. Gigs can last four or even five hours, you want to be comfortable.
@RockerForLife74 I will say this, I do like a "naked" bass drum. You have more options with placing your toms where you want them. You won't be tied down to what the manufacturer thinks is the proper placement. Remember this, the size of your kick plays a major role in tom placement too. You don't want to have to reach for those toms. I recently played a set of Taye drums, the kick was an 18", and sounded fantastic. Remember you have to haul those drums when you play!
@RockerForLife74 Honestly, the Gretsch Renown Maples are probably the nicest looking and sounding drums you can get in that price range (about $1200-1500 new), with die cast hoops and a sound that's 95% as good as their top-of-the-line USA Customs—but for 1/4 of the price. However, I should mention that I recently bought the new DDRUM Dios Maple kit, and I have to say, I'm in love with it! They look and sound amazing, and their going for about $900 new on eBay (w/ free shipping). Check them out!
I'm actually going to 2 drum stores this Saturday and going to some guy's house from craigslist to see a drumset he's selling. Link is on the bottom if you want to give me your opinion on it. I like it and all but I'm unsure about the rack toms being attached to the cymbal stand. Are there any disadvantages to having your rack toms connected to the cymbal stand? I always found things more reliable if they were connected to the bass drum.
@RockerForLife74 I checked it out, and it looks like a good deal for $900. Keep in mind it doesn't include a snare, so either you already own a good one or you'll need to buy one. As for toms mounted on cymbal stands, it's really a personal preference. I prefer virgin bass drums (without the tom mounting hardware), and the majority of high-end kits have virgin bass drums. You have more tom positioning flexibility that way, and not having them weigh down the bass drum really opens up its sound.
@edvia That's where the real let down is, no snare. I want to buy a new body all in one swoop so to say. I'm still going to check it out, but I have my doubts. I'm probably not going to end up getting it for the lack of the drum body parts I want. Other than that, let me ask you one more thing if you don't mind lol. Like I said, this Saturday I'm going out to get a new drumset. I'm crazy about Ludwigs since I'm a John Bonham fan but Gretsch seems great too. Which one is better sounding?
@anarcy7777u I haven't played on a Saturn kit, but I do know that they are nice. My Gretsch sound great when I play rock, I'm not a metal player, but I'd have to say they'd sound great with metal also. They come in different set-ups/kits in different sizes so you can get the sound you want. I'd have to say that you should try them both out and make that choice for yourself. Only you know what you like.
@anarcy7777u They both have great features. Don't overlook the Starclassics either. Like the uploader said, you've gotta go out and try both and make that decision for yourself. I'd be pretty tempted to choose the Saturns just because of how in love I am with Adler's kit and the deep, warm tones he gets. But I really love the the power and projection of the renowns.
@anarcy7777u for the price, id say mapex, clear powerfull sound, more for metal / heavy rock / experimental stuff, but they both sound great, you really have to try them both to get an idea of what you like, altho id say i have good taste :)
my dad has this kit i think its good but i prefer my PDP x7. yes i no its lower line but its still maple plus with my style i like more drums but hell i learnt how to play on my dads kit
PDP x7 uses poplar shells, but it's still a nice kit, pretty solid hardware too. For me Gretsch Renown Maple will probably be the next upgrade for me, from a Catalina Maple-kit!
I've never played a PDP kit. I can tell you that I did own a Mapex M Series kit a few years ago, they were birch /basswood, and had a great bright sound, for the money ($600), they weren't a bad choice at all. I'm sure that either the maple or birch PDP's sound fine. Keep in mind if you're hauling those around to gigs, the lighter the hardware the easier on your back. Play them before you buy! There are a lot of good kits out there for the money. Good luck. New kits are always a joy.
Hey. I got this set about a week ago and it's great. But I was wondering, do your toms have 5 or 6 lugs on top? Because mine have 5 and I thought that all toms were supposed to have 6.
Yes! I too play blues and rock, the kick will sound like thunder. Go check one out at a music store and play on it, you'll be impressed. The whole kit sounds great! Thanks for asking!
i have an gretsch USA custom and yes the bassdrum is a monster! my 20/16 sounds like nothing else i have heard! i cant cant have my good shure bassdrum mic closer than 40 cm or it will peak!!
I'm very happy with my kit. The kick drum is a monster! Everyone has their own opinion, so make sure that you play on one first, before you make that purchase. I wish that I had gone ahead and bought at least one more tom, but other than that the kit looks beautiful to my eyes. Try out several kits so you'll be as happy as I am, when you finally drop that cash. Let know if you decide to get one. Later...Steve
Yes it sounds great! If you'll check out some of the other videos I have posted you can hear them, but they are not miked up, so it's not a great sample. I'm trying to make a video of them miked up, but it's hard living in an apartment.
I don't have any audio with them mic'd up. I do have some where they were recorded live, but the audio was captured with a Flip Mino HD camcorder. I live in an apartment, so it is very difficult for me to play them at home. I'll do my best to try and record them soon, possibly in the next two to three weeks. Check back then.
I wish I could tell you, it's something I got from Youtube, and I can't locate what the title or artist is from the info on the video, sorry. Thanks for comments...yeah they're great kits! I originally had a Bill Bruford tune in the background, but was afraid Youtube would pull the audio.
Ya know they have a ton of music overlays in the edit video area on youtube. You can overlay all kinds of tracks from all kinds of types of music. Check it out man.
Yeah it sucks you can't just upload it from the Flip software in HD. Maybe Flip will add that option soon. Sorry about the lame background music, but since it came with Flip I figured that YouTube couldn't remove it for legal reasons. Better than listening to me rattle on. Thanks for the comment.
i like your kit particularly the cup holder; thats the shit. im going for a catalina maple with the 14" and 16" floor toms ASAP.
