  • I'm never going to listen to the Blood, Sweat and Tears version of the song again, now that I've heard Laura's own version(and it's especially poignant to hear this version, since she was probably dying when she played this gig). This has soul and truth...the BST version just has David Clayton Thomas strutting around and howling like a macho oaf.

  • Nioc,

"I bought Eli and the Thirteenth Confession earning the derision of my friends."

I could offer an explanation as to why Laura does not connect with many people, easy to be brief .

    Most people are fools.

  • I love Miss Nyro's work so very much. I've had 'Eli...' for some time now, & in the past year or two collected nearly all her other released recordings. Such a tremendous talent as songwriter, musician *& singer. She was wonderfully expressive, soulful. I have to say, though, that I feel 49 is not "far too Young". She lived a very full & creative life while she was here. Had she died at 29, that would've been far too young. It wasn't too long ago that 49 was considered what 60-something is now.

  • @exile103 Laura in fact did die soon after this concert in her 40's of ovarian cancer, I went to Jr High school with her .RIP

  • Why was she so underrated? She was just amazing. I bought Eli and the Thirteenth Confession earning the derision of my friends. But it gave me such pleasure and for so long.... I am sad that she died so young...

  • She made it! She's in the Hall! You made it Baby! NOW that place has some class. Hooray for her and all of us who love her!!! :-)

  • What a soul sister. The hair color is surprising.

  • Thank-you for this -- and your dream has come true! I love this version of the song. I saw her many times --- how lucky I was! Was this at The Bottom Line?

  • @hehebexx No, this was not at The Bottom Line. This was an outdoor venue: Point State Park in Pittsburgh, Pa., in June of 1994. And yes, our dreams have finally been fulfilled with Laura's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Sweet, huh?

  • Congratulations to Laura for being selected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

  • I missed out. I wish I would have seen her. Even seeing this video of her in concert is bringing me to tears. Can only imagine how I would have cried if I'd been there. Lucky all you who were there. Thank you denknee for bringing this precioius artist for us to see 'live'.

  • Does the "07" refer to a track listing? Laura died in 1997.

  • Laura Nyro was, after Carole King, probably the best female songwriter of the second half of the 20th Century ... Definitely the best American-born female songwriter (that's for you Joni Mitchell fans, of which I am one!).

  • Magical woman

  • she rarely smiled.... but was very inspirational....

  • Only Heaven for you, dear Laura! You sure gave us a taste of it while you were here on Earth. Many thanks.

  • thanks denknee ,i am a fan since 66 traveled the u.s. to hear her. i still have all her vinyl some 3&4 copies of each.i listen daily on my i-pad,sadly gone way before her time.

  • A million thanks for uploading this video! There's so little of Laura available and of course she's gone now so I'm gratefull for this. She was in fine form.

  • She had the gift. R.I.P Laura. You will be missed.

  • Love the BSaT version, but this is so far superior. Amazing.

  • I love Laura's music! I have just discovered her recently. A tremendous talent and voice she had. thanks!

  • I´ve just discovered Laura and I´m deeply touched by her talent and beautiful soul. She wasnt poular in M´exico. Listening and watchin Laura is one of the most wonderful moments I´ve had lately. Thanks denkee.

  • I think about her. Thank you for the live performance post for this wonderful talent.

  • wow...this is what youtube should be about...thank you so much

  • Her concerts were awesome. I saw her with LaBelle. It was my first concert. Awesome. Then I saw her when she picked up the bongos and Latin flavors. At first the audience was pissed. Someone yelled out "Santana!", but they were quickly won over. She was magic.

  • she sounds EXACTLY the same. if i were 10 years older, i might've caught this show

  • Was so lucky to see Laura at the Bottom Line in 1989, a phenomenal show. Jimmy Webb was also that week.

  • I just love this! Really heart broken she passed away so young.

  • You're at least 10 years off...she died in 1997

  • @24100danu I'm not 10 years off. I know she died in 1997. This video was recorded in 1994. She died 3 years later like I said in my previous post. I wished she could have lived another 10 or 15 years. So how am I 10 years off?

  • I can't help but get a little teary-eyed watching her sing this great song, knowing she would be gone just 3 years later. I wish the world could have had her for at least another 10 or 15 years. Forty-seven is way too young to die.

  • @JimKF 49 but you are right. She left us too soon.

  • Thank you for sharing this

  • I hate to say it, but her live performances were not nearly as exciting as her studio recordings.

  • Thanks so much denknee. I've loved Laura from the time I first heard her in the '60s, and I miss her to this day. Can you give us some details on this show? What year? Where?

  • The thing about her that amazes me the most is that she wrote so many hit songs between the age of 17 and 20 including this one

  • I fine it really hilarious...some time we have friends over and I always play Laura..they say wow wasn't that a Blood Sweat & Tears song...yeah, but it was Laura's long before David Clayton Thomas!!!

  • Too bad she wasn't into being filmed. Thank God for all the wonderful recordings she left us. I totally agree with Steve84084 she has never had an equal!

  • I'm loving all these live posts from this concert-how special they are? Did you take them yourself? Thanks.

  • I did, 60schild. There is very little video footage of Laura. It makes me happy to share these clips with other Nyro fans.

  • Thank you so much for this. Makes my day!

  • @denknee I met Laura back @1970. She was the most stage-frightened person I ever knew. More soul than she could control. Even in this presentation, she was epic in her talent and love. THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this.

  • @peetie44 You're welcome, Peetie. And thanks to everyone else who've left such nice messages here. I'm happy to make other Laura fans happy.

  • There are are a small handful of artists/songwriters who I consider to be true geniuses - and Laura was one. One of the joys of YouTube is being able to capture and preserve stuff like this. Thanks, much.

  • Thanks for posting. Laura Nyro was, and is, an awesome talent. This early song - "And When I Die" - was terribly prophetic: she died much too young.

  • You're right. This is terribly prophetic. This clip is from 1994. She was diagnosed with cancer in 1995 and died in 1997.

  • @jeffljacobs So! You know her right time of dieing? Interessting! Share the informatiom with us?

  • She seems to have went to a more traditional approach to her songs at this point then her early trademark chord changes....

  • Laura Nyro has never had an equal. This is a great song and great post.
