  • really enjoyed that! :o)

  • whould you reconmend the class 221 super voyager to any one?

  • @LegoTransport99 not anyone - it is quite hard to DCC

  • Sorry to bother you but if there is a problem with the train can you show us how to dcc chip it please.

  • @HevyTH1 it's a big job and a big video. I will get round to doing it but I'm in no rush at the moment.

  • Excellent vid, thanks v.much. Can you say on comparison to the Hornby competitor?? I'm at the point of getting a Voyager, and am at the decision point: 220 and 221 wanted (along with Pendolino), do I go Bachmann or Hornby?? Your review vids are excellent - and along with these it appears Hornby wins, but have you any experience of the Hornby model too? Many thanks

  • @gtswildfire the Voyager is certainly a well detailed train but inside it's not that good. I would recommend the Pendolino over the Voyager 220/221 but with some determination and know-how, it is possible to make the Voyager good.

  • /watch?v=MQu3Ui_jXFo

    gorgeous train hornby rule

  • the motor arrangement is bad, the detailing is not right, the red is slightly the wrong shade, the motor is noisy, because where the motor is you cannot mount cab lights, i do not recommend this model, go for the hornby premium range you wont regret it.

  • i had this train, its nowhere near as good as the hornby

  • i have those micro sockets on my stewart F3 A/b set...both units are programed with the same # and to run together they must be connected together much like the real units...i'll send u the vid here to show u..they also use the first generation type DCC decoders..great vid just awsome!!!

  • Great Review as always! I also find they are better with steam locos than diesels

  • Ive got the 220 voyager, I would post a video on it but i'm not a very confident speaker. but the main thing is that its very weak.

i got the virgin voyager three car train set and bought the additional coach separately but with four coaches the loco struggles to get up to a decent cruising speed.

now knowing the problems with DCC fitting the loco i doubt i'll be doing that now because the track layout i have is simple enough to use regular controllers and save myself a lot of work and money.

  • @cornettoman6 PLEASE do a video on it! Or send me the link at least?

  • @InterCity82 I will, but after something has finished, I won't say why on a public video because its personel but once its out of the way ill do a video for you :)

  • my virgin pendolino always dereails

  • I would like one of these so should i get the 220 instead?

    (Because it doesnt tilt.)

  • @SuperJimjoe - if you do, please do a video on it! :)

  • @InterCity82 Sure will

  • @SuperJimjoe The Bachmann 220 Still tlts as they did not remove it from the 221 tooling which was used to make the 220, thats what I've herd from people who own it.

  • @itgamer100 Are you sure? Because in the catalog they say it doesn't tilt.

  • @SuperJimjoe From what I heard its the same chassis, anyway if so the tilt is tiny, and it seems not many people get problems.

  • are you going to get a 66 or not just wundering

  • @class66arecool - a video on one will be coming up soon.

  • at 00:30 you can see thomas!

  • @trainguyrocks no you cant

  • @danwarren97 ok sorry 00:28 you can

  • iv had no problems whats so ever with mine, its very weird :/

  • how many trains do you have

  • @DarthBlur01 - over 100

  • Mine didn't do that

  • @DarthBlur01 or anything like that

  • how many turns of the screwdriver did he do ?

  • what was the name of the tool that was used to get th body from the chassis?

  • @modelrailway100 - a gap opener.

  • Will this work on 2nd Radius curves Will? as I might be getting one in XC.

  • @itgamer100 - it will, just - but I don't recommend it. Go for 3rd or higher.

  • @InterCity82 On my temporary layout I only have 2nd and 3rd radius curves and the 3rd one is for DCC :/ So for now when I get this unit it will have to be operated on 2nd radius.

  • you can see the engine glowing through the windows

    lol

    i want one though!!!

    nice train

  • @123cbaism - well I don't own everyone they've ever made lol - but I have had messages off several people who have suffered the same problem so it definitely seems to be a design problem.

  • Authough it may be noisy it gives off a realistic sound to how it sounds as the 220,221 and 222 are all diesel powered (in reality) as i have carried out research on these "Voyager" series trains

  • Mine had exactly the same problem.....constant derailments until I loosened the bogies. However the motor in mine was truly atrocious and didn't last that long at all, and ran very slowly

  • @stephensrailways Very informative video as well!

  • I have the same problem with my virgin pendolino from hornby it derailed on nearly all my bends :( I used the same technique of loosening the screws a bit and now it works great :)

  • Could you show us how to chip it?

  • whos that man ??

  • What is your Heljan Class 14 doing in Crewe Works? Also what is wrong with the Super Voyager Lights.

  • @MegaTrainlover - the Heljan 14 had a shunting accident and is having a buffer repaired. The Class 221 Super Voyager has nothing wrong with its lights.

  • @InterCity82 No its just that the Super Voyager lights don't seem to light up. Or is it just me?

  • @MegaTrainlover - they're currently DC and so not on constant and bright like lights are in a DCC loco/train. But they do work.

  • 0:30

  • Just like the real thing - looks good on the outside for a commuter train (which is what they seem to be despite where they run), but when running there are problems with lack of space to move and noisy motors. Also just like the real thing it seems to be rather a step backwards from what it's replaced.

  • Mine's a normal Virgin Voyager, and I'm having some trouble with it, as it makes a horrible grinding noise when it runs in one direction. Any suggestions?

  • @IgotPMT - Bachmann motors - not impressed so far.

  • @IgotPMT silly suggestion but try using the motor unit in the centre

  • @introducingmichael It's three carriages, and the middle carriage is the motor unit, so its been making that noise anyway :(

  • @IgotPMT silly suggestion but try using the motor unit in the centre of the train formation

  • Mindland Mainline mk3?

Are you hidding somthing Will? lol

If you can, Can the next video or one after that, be on the MML HST?

(of course after your hoilday :)

  • @itgamer100 - haha you caught me - I do have a Midland Mainline HST. You don't miss a thing! lol

  • I want this loco, but my only downside is having an all dcc layout and on hearing your points about the chipping its looking like £30 on chips!

  • @MyWorldIsTech - It is a shame but to do it properly, yes, it will cost at least that to chip it. And it's a train, well techincally a DMU - not a locomotive. :)

  • can u DCC this loco

  • @Liverpoolfcfever - watch the video ;)

  • Do you actually live in crewe? Im only saying because i do and am not far from crewe works.

  • @Tornadofan3 - I do state where I live on my channel, and it really is Crewe.

  • Is the class 170 a good train by bachmann

  • @Liverpoolfcfever - I've heard it's ok but not got one myself.

  • Im steering clear of this loco due to far too many design faults for my liking.

  • Are you going to DCC her or just leave her as DC

  • @M9Guy - she will be DCC chipped but after the APT.

  • When is your Thomas from?

  • @Bachmannmodeler - from the late 80s/early 90s

  • 7:32 Sorry for the 2 comments but that is exactly the same as the class 170 turbostar has the same socket ! arrangement

  • 0:31 I see something *ANOTHER 43 HST* lol

  • Nice video, very informative.

  • @conor5643 - haha lol, yes well I shall definitely do more like this :) I think people found it useful.

  • Great video, all I would suggest it to run the power car round, on its own and at full speed for about an hour. This will let it 'run in' which is recommended by my local model shop and Bachmann themselves.

  • @intercity82 i stand corrected lol

  • will do you feel that you may have scored this a little to high considering that the 57 thunderbird got a 8 aswell? just a though lol

  • @jackakapieface - I didn't score it, Craig did (the guy who opened her up). We were fair with the score really, and you'll see she did do poorly for performance. The rest of her is really good, it's just a shame about the motor.

  • you have so many trains how do you afford alll of them wheres the best place to get them cheap

  • Fair point!! Love the vids by the way, keep them coming mate.

  • I think that possibly fitting a slightly longer screw into the bogey so that it seats tightly but still gives the same required distance would work, that way there would be no need to check if the screw is becoming looser.

  • @biggkevv1973 - although I can understand what you're trying to suggest, I do not think it will work in this situation. As you can see in the video there is a metal washer that serves 2 purposes, 1) is to stop the spring riding up the length of the screw and 2) it is this washer against which the screw tightens. If we were to use a longer screw it would just continue thru the hole until it hit the motor unit underneath.

  • i am sure i counted 5 class 58's

  • @BulletAchemist - no need for the apostrophe mate :) It's just 58s when you're talking about lots of them. And I do have a total of 5 now! Well spotted!

  • great video about the class 221 i may go and buy one, but are you to do a video on the class 70 diesel bachmann have got.

  • @snowyhillrailway - I currently have no interest in the class 70, mainly due to not being interested in Freightliner. But maybe once it comes out in another livery I might look at it again. Although I do think it is rather ugly.

  • I know how you feel with this sort of thing. 2 nrm flying scotsmans laiter and still not working right. Given up with warrenties, dcc supplies and other parties and have under taken the work myself. Motor swaps, taken out the plug and play pin and removed the tender pick ups, just for starters. Just a little though, have you tried puting some washers/ spacers around the screws? Should keep them tight and yet allow movement. Great vids, cheers.

  • @JayJJ69 - Washers wouldn't work unfortunately. The screws aren't holding anything down, but rather lifting the bogie up. So if you create a gap and then plug that gap with a washer, the bogie becomes tight again. In short, the design is flawed and the tilting mechanism makes this problem even worse. For now all seems ok, but we'll just have to see how long she lasts I guess!

  • @InterCity82 Just an idea I had from my bike riding, we use a lock tight on sertain screws, bolts and spoke nipples (the nut on the end of the spoke) to prevent them from working loose, maybe a small drop will give the range of movment needed while stopping the screw coming loose and to save money, tip ex work just as well. I use it on my flying scotsman to stop the draw bar working loose.

  • @GeeksvilleStudios - if you have problems, get in touch.

  • @Rbrownsell - yes - one to keep an eye on for sure :)

  • @T0pper221 - lol, thanks but we really will be ok in DCCing her. We've chipped tender driven locos and even 1970s split chassis locos where the electricity is conducted around the entire chasis! If we can do them, we can do anything lol. I still like the nice and easy jobs the most tho lol

  • i have the same probs on mine but mine was the older version i did the same thing with the screws also run it in for ages helped my noisy motor

well done again for fantastic vid

  • @c5lun - thanks! :)

  • Is that an East Midlands HST coach I see?

  • @Arsenal96Mike - There sure is! For the East Midlands HST :)

  • please review the APT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @FergDaddy101 - special vids on her are coming up in the Summer I think.

  • errm if you dont mind how much was this?

  • @97wolffang - £150 I think

  • @InterCity82 A £150?!!!! omg thats not fere on you at tall

  • what i would do is swap the the bodys over so the motor car is in the middle and i would get this train dcc fitted. But if you are planing of getting is chip will you do a video on that.

  • @graystrainspotter - for the sake of £10 for one extra chip it's ok. Besides, what if the end bodies don't fit on the centre chasis? I haven't tried it but they might not fit. I'll check.

  • Do you think you'll do more vids like this where you look at fixing problems. Ive got a bachman hall which has the same problem of not going round corners.

  • @110samec - we will definitely be doing more vids like this :)

  • @InterCity82 - awesome video m8, well done to you n Craig on working as a team should I say for getting such an ace loco working perfectly :-) 10/10

  • @Class66Rocks - haha, cheers mr!

  • when can you rev hornby night mail

    set

  • @hydronauts - planned for Easter :)

  • nice video! glad that you and gregg got her working properly.

  • @tpe18509 - lol, thanks :) he's called Craig by the way

  • @InterCity82 opps. lol! i musteve mustunderstod you. :)

  • That train is cursed. I saw another vid of a 220 or 221 in XC (Crosscountry) livery. The motor was louder than a power drill! I think it was also manufactured by Bachmann.

  • @TheMysticDave - I shall definitely be looking into the noisy motor problem - that's for sure.

  • a possible way around having to keep checking the screws in the power car might be to place a few small washers and then tighten up . havent a clue weather it will actually work or not but just an idea anyway

  • @gunnerman1100 - sadly the washers won't work as that would remove the freedom from the chasis again. The bogies pull down on the chasis through the screws you see, so if you create a gap and then fill it again with a washer you're back at square one. So far all seems ok - but I will keep my eye on her.

  • If your worried about those screws coming lose on the bogies, try 243 threadlock loctite. Apply on the thread, then tighten to desired tension, and leave it to set (takes seconds) afterwards you should find that the bogies will never need not come apart again. Hope this information is useful for easier maintenance for future running.

  • @Simplex1988 - for now all seems ok but I will keep my eye on her.

  • Interesting tilting mechanism does that mean that it will tilt more on 2nd radius curves as the bogies are turning in further?

  • @istich123 - I haven't ran her on 2nd rafius curves yet - only 4th and 3rd.

  • Sounds like a pain in the butt. Hornby's Eurostar has similar problems - the power car burnt out on mine, twice! That said, the Eurostar hadn't changed since the released it ages ago - when was the Voyager released? Current standards are higher than this!!!

  • @streamlinedtrains - Someone said it was released in 2003 but I don't know myself. It is quite sloppy in design really - and what's worse, that motor arrangement seems to have been copied in the class 150.

  • Hi i do have this Train and i have had no problems what so ever I have heard a story that bachman realeased a few dodgey ones but then the tryed to recall them and send out the new ones

  • how do you move the tripod with no hands?!

  • @DelticFilms Its a different person ;)

  • dont worry about the noise my backy 108 is a bit like that but with time and running in it will get quieter my 220 was noisy too when new funny that was from hattons

my other from ian allen was quiet, mmmm

  • @1968concorde - hmmmmmmmm, interesting

  • finally hey lol, no it does look good running but looks like a pain in the bum if stuff is wrong. still 5***s video

  • @jaannetts16 - true, very, very true

  • Nice ending to a great set of videos mate!!! Im still going to get it, you havent put me off yet but I think ill stick to it being dc. Its far to much for me to take on as Idont really enjoy messing around with them, I just like them to work straight out of the box. Putting a chip in is about as far as I want to go!!! I cant wait to get my Virgin and Cross Country 221s now they look very good :)

  • @ApacheBravo - yes, they do at least look impressive :)

  • I hope you have helped me and a lot of people with this review, Looks fantastic but Bachmann, well dissapointing!! I think my 150/1 needs the screw treatment aswell :(

  • @armleyroad - ahh right! You must let mw know how you get on with that as I have one too.

  • Can you hide the couplings?

  • @ididi9 - no, just like in real life you can't.

  • can you not claim a refund that it is not dcc ready properly? its been miss sold to you as something it isnt

  • @jazzyjaxroadshow - it wasn't sold as DCC ready - but opening her up revealed that they were going to make her DCC ready and then stopped.

  • Everyone say Hi Craig!

  • @ididi9 - lol

  • do you think you have to do that to all modles? because I was thinking of geting one and I have alot of track like the one that mad it derail.

  • @LegoArtsProduction - it might be ok, but it might not - no way to tell. But if she isn't ok I can fix her for you :)

  • @InterCity82 Thnx. Im still thinking about geting her but I dont know yet.

  • great that you have brung back the tally chat at the end

  • @gtacrusher123 - that features on all normal loco and train reviews - but not on all *SPECIALS*

  • @InterCity82 ok

  • Very Good! Certainly want to get decent running out of a lovely model like this. Glad that shes not derailing any more. :)

  • @MrPetrolhead09 - haha, yes, fingers crossed hey! :)

  • A wee drop of Loctite should stop those pesky screws from working loose.

  • @gbonesteak - for now they seem ok but I shall keep my eye on them

  • Brilliant technical note's!

When you say "Crewe Works", do you mean you actually own a workshop to fix other peoples locos?

  • @BMR5ify - Crewe Works is the name given to the Dining Table and that room basically - it's full of tools and locomotives and parts :)

  • hattons is great i got my bridge from there when i first got into the hobby and it was prety much the first thing i bought i havent been recently but i might ask my dad if i could go again

  • @gtacrusher123 - everyone should go at last once :)

  • Thanks for this. Now I definitely will not buy this train. Overall 8 outa 10? Nah...she looks great BUT she sounds like a tractor (an old Soviet one at that) and all the farting around to get her working PLUS all the trouble to install DCC and lights...I would give it a 5 outa 10. You have saved me a lot of money!

  • @clusterfak - lol, well you won't get any argument from me on your final decision :)

  • She looks great

cant wait to see the board how long is it going to take and also does it tilt like the pendolino

  • @Whizzer1 - she tilts pretty well, about as well as the Pendolino I'd say.

  • The Dynamic Duo! hope to see more vids of the two of you as this was a very good vid :)

  • @scotrail47 - haha lol :) thanks

  • Theres lots of mixed numbers on the scoreboard! I still want one and if it geos wronge then it goes wronge!

  • @eanat11 - lol, you mean 'wrong' :) no e - well it's a shame her performace was so bad, but it really was/is.

  • @InterCity82 is their? oh, lol! :) Yh, i agree.

  • @eanat11 - LOL, and you mean 'there' not 'their' lol what are you like?!

  • @InterCity82 bad! heheh

  • I have a 220 in Virgin livery and it's a little sluggish and noisy, but I still want a Cross Country 221. Just really like the look of it. Glad to see that the fix was (for now) very successful!

  • great review, i've just got to upload my videos now :( but why don't you glue the screws but not with super glue then if you need to take them out you can have the strength to take them out

    cheers

  • @TRAINALEX100 - for now the train seems fine - she will be checked at regular periods and if further steps need to be taken they will be. But for now, all is ok.

  • Nice work on fixing it.

In Bachmann’s defence the class 221 model is quite old, being designed in 2003, this was when the majority of layouts and locos were not DCC. Later units such as the 108, 105 and 4cep are much better in terms of quality control and they are dcc ready. The 221, 158, 170 and 166 models by bachmann are not DCC and have much older chassis designs.

However the fact that they are still produced to the old designs is silly, they need to be updated to today’s standards.
