I am absolutely amazed at how fast I learned the Mole concept, just by watching 2 videos by you. When my chemistry teacher explained it I was lost the whole semester. literally, it made me laugh to know that what I struggled with for months, I learned in 2 videos. you are an excellent teacher. I love your personality/enthusiasm about it, it makes me WANT to learn.
Wow. You seriously make this interesting. I live in India right now, doing 10th grade, but I moved here from America, and almost forgot how hands-on and interactive the teachers are over there!

wow, you are a fantastic teacher! you have helped me so much you could never knoiw. my teacher really doesnt explain it very well, and i have exams coming up, but now, you have CHANGED MY GRADE! thankyou so much!!!!!!!!!
Okay, so I have a question. Let's say you're diluting a solution. Would the number of moles of solute remain constant but the number of moles of solvent increase then? So, overall the total number of moles in the solution itself would increase, correct?
@bannanaiscool Ohhh, ok, that makes sense. Why would it be any different in molality though? Doesn't molality measures the number of moles of solute found in a particular amount of solvent? So it's still technically all about the solute. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@usmankify Right you are. It's just that the mass of the solvent, and not just it's volume, is under consideration, as well. It's still about the solute!
@bannanaiscool Brilliant. That cleared a lot of stuff up. I was kinda confused about moles in general but now I think I understand them. Thanks alot, sir.
our school is looking for a new chem teacher because our apchem teacher is leaving to chicago....PLEASE look up yongsan international school of seoul...our school pays for your house mortage...and they would pay for your flight here
I wish you were my science teacher! you not only taught chemistry but maths too- standard form! You're so awesome! I began learning about moles three days ago butI didn't get it up until I watched this clip -->seriously! I watched other clips regarding moles but none of those were as good as this!!! thumbs up for this clip!!!
OMGGGGGGG U SAVED MY LIFEE with that first part in the beginning with the ice and the stuff in the beakers!! fot THIS WHOLE SEMESTER my teacher has been (unsuccessfully, may i add) telling us what a mole is but i NEVER GOT IT. lol thank you U ARE MY LIFESAVER
Wow! I had to sign in to comment. Thankyou so much. Our teacher spend 1.5 hours trying to explain the same thing what you did in 7 minutes. Thankyou for making it easier to understand and the conversion unit part.
oh crap i had a chem test today and i didn't do the sig figs thing at the end i just left the answer at for example 18.06x10^23, i didn't do the 1.81x10^24 stuff. I think i may have failed the test due to this error. As a chem teacher or professor, would you count the entire answer as wrong you see the work is correct but they don't do the sig figs in the end?
We need more Chemistry teachers like you! I didnt take Chem 30 in highschool because my chem teacher just could not teach it. Rather we need teachers in general like you! You make it interesting and not boring.

@loufromlou yeah you said "there are 6.02x10^23 sodium chloride ionic units in here" . I am asking what is ionic unit or compound as opposed to a molecular compound?

Chemguy I have literally had an epiphany, my teacher has been trying to grill that into me for 2 years and you have just done it in less than eight minutes!!!
Nice video! I could follow everything perfectly. One thing I'd note though: Don't count the sig figs of Avogadro's number when you're converting because it's a constant. (They don't count.) In fact, don't bother with sig figs when you want to convert something at all (accept the number you're converting). Just remember that the sig figs in the original value should equal the sig figs in the converted value.
Ahem...incorrect. Whoever taught you that is ill-informed. To 3 sig digs, Avo's number is 6.02...to 4 sig digs it's 6.022... Constants most certainly have Sig digs; what about eqm CONSTANTS? They have sig digs. Conversion ratios do as well; they have infinite sig digs.
did you know that Avogadro's number wasnt discovered by Avogadro, it was named after him for his contributions to science after his death. By the way, i like your video, its very easy to understand.
Is there a particular viewing order for your videos? I know they are numbered but it would be nice to follow a specific viewing order by topic. I am having a hard time in Chemistry and I want to make sure that I am not missing them in the order that they should be viewed. Thanks...
Is there a particular viewing order for your videos? I know they are numbered but it would be nice to follow a specific viewing order by topic. I am having a hard time in Chemistry and I want to make sure that I am not missing them in the order that they should be viewed. Thanks...
Wow, that's like a set-up question! Here's the deal: in about 3 days, March 18 2010 (or so), I'll have all of my reshot videos in HD uploaded, and for only a donation, you get access to an order list of over 200 vids!
For throwing you that softball I should get a deal :). How do I donate and won't everybody have access to the videos through YouTube or are we talking about something else? I am an old...er...older student who needs a decent grade in Chemistry. I am really stressing about this course and I need all the help I can get. Thanks!
Thanks for using a problem that doesn't use hydrogen, it is the only one my COLLEGE PROFESSOR will do, so when everything is just multiplied or divided by one its a pointless example to teach with.
Thank you so much. My teacher isn't great... probably a great chemist, but doesn't speak english well enough to be an effective teacher... these videos have gotten me through chem class, thank you
Because you typed in 6.02X10(2nd function EE)23, instead of 6.02(2nd function EE)23. "2nd function EE 23" means 'times 10 to the 23". You punched in 10 times too much in your steps.
I thank you lots. My teacher is great, don't get me wrong, but she doesn't seem to have the same enthusiasm you do while explaining. Normally this stuff would go in one ear and out the other. Thank you VERY much! Chem. finals are tomorrow and i know feel a bit more confident and capable!
Well, you really should be provided the molar mass, because to calculate it from the atomic number and number of neutrons present is a ridiculous method that does not take into account all the isotopes of the element. I don't like it.
All of you should stop complaining about your teachers, my teacher included this in the exam, and he never explained it to us...

You're welcome.

did you know that Avogadro's number wasnt discovered by Avogadro, it was named after him for his contributions to science after his death. By the way, i like your video, its very easy to understand.
charmio 1 year ago
Yes, I do know this; and it was Einstein that came up with the lovely experiment, using Brownian motion, to come up with the number!

I hope that helps!

For throwing you that softball I should get a deal :). How do I donate and won't everybody have access to the videos through YouTube or are we talking about something else? I am an old...er...older student who needs a decent grade in Chemistry. I am really stressing about this course and I need all the help I can get. Thanks!

Thanks for using a problem that doesn't use hydrogen, it is the only one my COLLEGE PROFESSOR will do, so when everything is just multiplied or divided by one its a pointless example to teach with.

why did it become 10 times 24? why not 10 times 23???
in class:
Me: "teacher, what is a mole?"
Teacher: A mole is 6.02x10 23
Me: Alright, but what is a mole?
Teacher: A mole is a mole.
Me: umm..........K.

6.02x3=18.06 so u gotta add 1 power to make it 1.806x10 to the 24th instead of 23rd

ChemGuy,
I typed in 3.00mol x 6.02 x 10^23 on my calculator and the answer rounded ^was 10^25 where you had 10^24.
Why the difference?
Subscribed to your vids because I find them helpful!
energyice 2 years ago
Because you typed in 6.02X10(2nd function EE)23, instead of 6.02(2nd function EE)23. "2nd function EE 23" means 'times 10 to the 23". You punched in 10 times too much in your steps.

I thank you lots. My teacher is great, don't get me wrong, but she doesn't seem to have the same enthusiasm you do while explaining. Normally this stuff would go in one ear and out the other. Thank you VERY much! Chem. finals are tomorrow and i know feel a bit more confident and capable!

I liked the video.... i t was quite helpful...
And interesting in learning than in our school...
but there's a little problem... in our school we are not allowed to see the gram/mole mass .... we have to calculate it... can you please help?
TheInvinciblePrinces 2 years ago
Well, you really should be provided the molar mass, because to calculate it from the atomic number and number of neutrons present is a ridiculous method that does not take into account all the isotopes of the element. I don't like it.
