I'm just gonna say that this is one of my favourite albums ever. And I totally get where you're coming from, but really I see so few flaws in this album. I haven't grown tired of it yet and it has been my go-to album ever since it came out, but maybe it's just because I'm an 18 year old who likes corny, whiny and sort-of angry music. who knows.
i know they both came out in 2011, but please review shed by title fight and parrot flies by algernon cadwallader. two albums i really enjoy and i'd love to hear your opinion
Hey Antony, Recently got into La Dispute due to one of your reviews, then discovered these guys through them, great stuff. Wondering is there are any post-hardcore/melodic hardcore albums that you'd strongly recommend?
Also, do you like Devil Sold His Soul, if so then cool.
Stumbled across this video simply because of Touche Amore, only to find one of the most interesting, explanatory and genuine reviewers on youtube. Brilliant work sir!
I strongly disagree that the album needs more harmonies. If it had more harmonies, it would lose that magic effect which this band has of keeping the melodies very sparse and then proceeding to bring in a melodic hook or line to create a very cathartic moment within the song at only the most precise and necessary instance.
personally i loved this album. and PLEASE review La Dispute's album "Wildlife" which comes out October 4. it is amazing melodic hardcore with great vocals
I agree, this album sometimes is really great, but also I grow weary of the stalemate vocals.
Please please review anything by La Dispute. They're the only melodic hardcore band I truly love. They have one LP which is phenomenal and they have a new one coming out October 4th.
@theneedledrop you're spot on about how you think they play. they've actually been on tour pretty much continuously for about two years with something like one-week breaks in between. a good part of their shows are basement shows and everyone who attends always sings all the words. it's an amazing thing to see them play, you should do it.
Touche Amores music makes me feel like i'm understood and that they and other people have the same thoughts and views as i do and it makes me feel better. It makes me feel like i belong. Their music is everything to me and i love Jeremy's voice and i can see the differences in his voice in every song and i like that its just him i like that their are no harmonies because otherwise the songs wouldn't be as powerful. I don't know lol that's just what i think.
Touche amore is just amazing they are the most honest band and unique, their sound is epic and they are not POST-HARDCORE...i love this band and i will always support them
@bigkdeezy um...so everything else he says is pretty much null and void just because of a simple mispronunciation? I don't pronounce the band's name that way, alot of my friends don't either. Get your head out of your ass.
as if the accent on the end of amore wasn't a dead giveaway (do you know what an accent is, have you ever heard of an aigu?), before every live performance they say their name (the correct way). you're pronouncing a band's name wrong on purpose. you're an idiot. @MrSplatterPlatter
@bigkdeezy better to be an "idiot" by your tight definitions than a pretentious, piece of shit asshole like you. Grow the fuck up, it's a fucking band name, it's not the end of the goddamned world. Literally no one cares how you pronounce it but you, so just go the fuck away.
I'd have to say for myself, that I personally enjoyed this album. I was just recently on a Two Door Cinema/Black Kids music binge and was recommend I listen to Pianos Become The Teeth, which led me to Touche Amore. Personally, I love the lead singers screams and guitar parts. Although, I'd actually stick with Bear Vs Shark for my emotional post hardcore stuff anyday of the week.
The lyrics on their freshman album "dead horse" are better. They continue that epicly encouraging anthem-like theme but are not as trite. The lyrics on this album seem forced. Unfortunately, the "dead horse" production isn't as good but I appreciate their collection so much more for it. I'm a big fan of these guys. They are very dedicated to putting on an intimate show and all members are great musicians.
Anthony, I do want you to give your view on today's hip hop, pros and cons, why you like it, why you don't, where we could improve, etc. Because I realize that you've done a lot of hip-hop reviews this year, so I'd like to hear your view on the genre in general. It might be a horrible idea, but whatever :3
(continued) the first Young Livers album, which was only eight trackes, but ran a bit longer. Inanyways, I think it's worth emphasising that there's a lot of, if not originality then innovation, from the loudness of the vocals, to the mixture of sometimes Bridge And Tunnel like guitars with the vocals, as well as the drummer introducing the odd blast beat. All in all, I think it's well worth the 20 minutes a spin takes, and I'm really looking forward to screaming those words at Fest time!
Good review. All your points are valid. I've heard people complain about the lyrics a lot on this one, though nobody's really explained why as well as you have. I quite like them if i'm being honest, but I guess I'm a punk rock Jimmy Stewart. Also, your point about variety.... How much variety can you get out of 20 minutes? I see this more as an EP with lots of songs than an actual album - it has the number of tracks but not the length of a LONG PLAYER, sort of like a counterpoint to (continued)
I think you reviewed this album as favorably as you did because you probably haven't heard their first album. The songs on their debut are much more together then the one's on this release, a lot of parts sound so haphazardly slammed into place. I find every time I listen to Parting the Sea I'd just rather put on anything else they've done.
@peaceorperil i agree. to the beat of a dead horse was a much better album. this album felt like they were just trying to do it again. their first record gave me goosebumps, this album feels more like i'm listening to one of 'those bands' if you will. not a big fan of that shit.
Yes yes yes finally some hardcore/emo/"skramz"/whatever! There are a shitload of amazing bands in this area, like Off Minor, Daitro, Killie, Kidcrash or more loosely Kickball, Des Ark, Lack, that are really worth the listen.
Although this style of music doesn't really appeal to me much, I can at least give credit to some of the guitar riffs and lyrics...the vocals were quite intense, but I kind of found them irritating. I'd have to be in the right mood to listen to this album.
this band is such a girlfriend band i cant take any of their words seriously just based on how cheesy their one liners come across, you should check out the new soul control ep though
@lSTAYHlGH The ideas that females are supposed to feel a certain way and listen to certain styles of music seperate than that of guys is one of the reasons that punk remains a non-inclusive little boys club.
@lSTAYHlGH I think the fact that it really is a part of common lexicon and that you used it so flippantly is part of the reason he was insulted by it. Subtle sexism like this pervades most of the culture. Defending it by saying "It's just an expression" is still defending it and you are now complicit in that sexism. "Nigger knife" is "just an experssion" too, but you're still a racist if you use it.
@johnhawks thats like saying i cant call blood for blood a "tough guy" band just because someone is tough dosent mean they like blood for blood. there are plenty of awesome bands with girls that i am totally into like punch and hatred surge so there is no way you can call me sexiest based on my statement. I merely made an observation that it is a band girls tend to like and some pretentious douchebag with a flashy vocab and a holier than thou attitude is not going to change my opnion
@lSTAYHlGH I wasn't attempting to imply that you, personally, were sexist. I was only trying to clarify why the other person was offended by your usage of the colloquialism. I didn't mean to offend you. Fact is fact: Generally, males and females enjoy different things. While the terms "girlfriend" and "tough guy" band maybe be generally apt, that kind of sweeping stereotyping of gender norms offends some people. That's all. (PS, words are useful and beautiful. Don't hate on vocabulary. :) )
Yeah, the vocalist is, for me, the weakest link on this album, perhaps even this band as a whole. His screaming lacks strength and his lyrics are very corny. I've come to hate this style of "forced poetry" that also makes La Dispute a grating listen. The problem is that I have trouble taking anything that comes out of the mouths of lyricists like these seriously. The music was good, though. As he said, I certainly picked up on the fact that Anthony doesn't listen to this kind of music at all.

I want you to know that I appreciate you reviewing this despite not enjoying more recent post hardcore.
I really full heartedly agree with a lot of the stuff you're saying here as I watch this. Condolences is my favorite track on the album, and I know it definitely isn't yours, but I'm sure we can all agree that Wants/Needs is also just awesome.
really glad you reviewed this album. I like you, thought the lyrics were a bit much at some point. But its the same reason i love this album.......some good listens have, and will be had in the future. Its on my ipod so.......good stuff IMHO.
This is the best review i've seen you do so far, very accurate and honest review

Finally got around to reviewing my current AOTY. Christ, it took you a while...
Anyways, thanks again for reviewing it.

This is some of the best post- hardcore to come out since ModernLifeisWar which is what they remind me of. Good stuff.

You've heard Modern Life Is War's "Witness," haven't you, Anthony? That's a modern hardcore album that definitely rivals some of the classics.

dint enjoy this too much:/ i could see right through those lyrics and the static vocals dint do it though the concepts were good
but i have a question. what are your favorite "screamo" bands?
also u should do an "essentials" series for those who don't lurk on that good ol' music board;P
