  • this makes it hard for me to breathe....its so incredible, and true. And what a perfect gentleman with a perfect voice to tell this story. RIP charles.

  • without a future there is no past...

  • Wow! very sad song, but very meanigful. Aznavour has so much talent.

  • This song reminds me of lost loved ones and also to have Respect and Love for your elders...They were in our shoes at one point... And we will either grow old and be in theirs or we will die young...Each day is a gift - Peace - Namaste

  • 2:22 Ahhh and now the face rain.... . . .

  • Other singers sing it better than the original singer

  • It is regrettable that we must age, and the only remnants of a happier time may be resurrected, if for only a few moments, in the duration of this song.....Tres Bon, Charles!

  • it is a very good numbber

  • I love this song (and I'm 15 :D )

  • 10 people are very sad !

  • Great recording , of a beautiful song by a great singer........

  • Life died in 1979 , I feel sorry for anyone born after 1980 you have no idea what you missed .

  • @sbijan666 I feel sorry for anyone that doesn't see the birth of life in every moment of its' death. The future is never to be discounted -or what point is there in our next breath?

  • best song his done-however roy clarkes version is just as good if not better

  • how does he get such amazing nostalgie into his voice? is it his diction, his french accent that makes this version so unique? magnificnet. the final "young" gives one goose pimples

  • song it is like walking through a life where always is yesterday and even today is yesterday

  • MG this is so GREAT!!!!!!

  • As an old man I can weep when I hear these words for so many of us do these same things with our lives. On the other hand when you are old and looking back it's often sad because you know you can never go back to those moments and friends have passed away. That's why we should treasure these moments. NOW is the essence.

  • @shamusoz you've hit the nial on the head there shamusoz i don't know how old you are but i'm now 6o and finally understand what oscar wilde meant when he said: "the tragedy is not that we are old but that we are young"

  • @shamusoz NOW is the essence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!In 1961 Aznavour wasn't an old man.

  • @shamusoz very well spoken, especially when you lose the one you Love to the Above. makes you rethink a lot of things

  • @shamusoz You are so right. The only time that matters is now. Cherish it for soon it will be gone.

  • @shamusoz Please don't weep Shamusoz. Yesterday was beautiful, you are right to treasure.Love yourself and the past! Luv BB x

  • @buntybunny Thanks for your optimism... I stopped crying myself :)

  • so many covers but only one voice sings the passion the writer intended. You all know the rest. Fabulous recording, thanks for sharing it with us all. Nick in London

  • I love the song and it's strange but I prefere I for this song the version in English.

  • lovely song, but you probably do have to be of a certain age before you fully appreciate it. but not only that, you must be living with regret at not fulfilling potintial when you had the tools (body) at your disposal too..

  • @djb8t3 Sadly, you are correct. However, with that in mind, it's also a caveat to those who still have the tools. :)

  • @djb8t3 Well said.

  • this song is a heartbreaker....

  • Formidable!

  • suberb. i love playing this on my piano.tHE WDS ARE SO APT. AND HIS VOICE , WELL, IS IT NOT GD.

  • wow,,,,this is GREAT

  • Il piu grande!!!!

  • @ MariskaTardijn

The moment you say that you have to be older to understand, is the moment you forgot how it was to be young. Because it isn't the number of years that you lived but the things you've done and experienced. Often this is almost equal, but many times not.

  • @amvslcvd No, I had my pain when I was young, but the pain of this song I didnt understand. I thought I could, but believe me: now I understand this song I can say it is a soft pain.

  • @ MariskaTardijn

The moment you say that you have to be older to understand, is the moment you forgot how it was to be young.

  • @amvslcvd I would like to talk with you about this,I think you had many sorrow

  • One of the most beautiful songs of Charles Aznavour. But you have to be older to understand .

  • yesterday i may have been young but now is already the yesterday i'll reflect on when tomorrow comes. Wiser or older? Youth is all in the mind until the bits start to drop off :)

  • BEAUTIFUL! VERY BEAUTIFUL!...

  • SImplesmente maravilhosa !!!

  • Csodálatos!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Heard this song playing in the background of a old 70's film and fell in love with it. It is fantastic.

  • Oh my, how beautiful, now my favorite version of this amazing song.

  • Truly one of the top artists of my lifetime. Such a soothing and mezmerising voice. Thank you for many relaxing evenings.

  • Touching my heart <3

  • age doesn't matter...... how you live your life is...... spend our time as if it is the final second of living... enjoy life to the fullest every millisecond of it..... be happy : > )

  • wonderful this guy was so good

  • Does anyone know who wrote this song? Thanks!

  • LA PUISSANCE !!!!!!!!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!

    TheSchouwb68

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written. The poetry breaks you apart. Written in 1961, I see the inspiration Paul McCartney got for his song "Yesterday (life was such an easy game to play)" McCartney's are simple compared to this. Yesterday when I was young sounds like it was written on the caliber of Shakespeare. No one seems to notice the obvious connection to the Beatles "Yesterday?" and give credit to the original.

  • @sparklingmichele

I agree, very sad song. I think how my Wife life was cut short.

    Rip Livia I love you June 17 1980- Jan 9 2011

  • @whitesox2005ify

Too sad.. I can't imagine losing my wife at such young age..

    RIP!

  • @whitesox2005ify So sad to hear you lost your wife. A sad song but true - so many wonderful memories, Livia knew the most wondertul thing on earth your love! Happy memories! Luv BB xx

  • @whitesox2005ify please be strong....I understand it is very hard to loose the closest person to you at such a young age.... Very very sad....January 9th is my birthday...but I was born a few years before your wife....

  • @whitesox2005ify awww i'm so sorry for you :( :(

  • Some songs were meant to be sung by one artist, and one artist only. It is not to say that others who may sing it don't do a better job while doing it, it just means I cannot hear this song interpreted by anyone else but Charles. Be it in Italian, French, English, or else. This is Charles all the way.

  • When the song was written

    The words are and strong

The music reminds you your past

The voice echos from brain and heart

  • sorry johnny mathis's version is the best

  • @KatherineTheCutie Sorry but Johnny Mathis as no emotions singing that song , no one can sing like Charles Aznavour.

  • The most beautiful lyrics I have ever heard.

Its reality is so sharp that it can cut open one's heart.

Me fascina!!!!

  • This is truly beautiful music and lyrics...it sets a standard.

    Larry

  • Charles Aznavour, you are my hero. You are authentic can sing bring yesterday to today with your tone of voice.

  • CooL

  • I've heard all the versions of this song, and they're all good, but Roy Clark is the only one who immortalized it.

  • @loverofthemilf I have to agree with you. Charles' accent and sometimes seemingly rushed pacing are a bit of a distraction for me, though I suppose someone who got "weaned" on his version would not find them a problem. Roy's version, IMHO, seems to let you pay attention to the lyrics and hear the message that they teach. It's not an easy song to listen to if you're self-centered. It invites some critical introspection, and I think Roy's version facilitates that a bit better.

  • Amazing song

  • Tough call between Charles and Roy. I give them equal scores. The others are only mediocer by comparison.

    Thank you, Charles. Well done.

  • great song, ehh

  • My favorite singer for more than 40 years...always the very best!

  • Simply the best...! Thank you for the music!

  • •♥❤ ah ... deep sigh ❤♥••.♫♪♫•¸¸.•*¨*

  • I must say this dude has got big chunky hands. I placed my hand into his hand mould on the pavement in Cannes. Ok I know it's not a sentimental comment, but then again I'm not the sentimental and romantic type. However this is indeed a beautiful song and I might start crying if I drink another bottle of scrumpy cider.lol

  • The years run away so quickly! ;0) As long as we have memories and can recall them - listen to Charles, we are forever young and living life to the full!!

  • makes me think of all the good times, the bad times and the sad times. Such a beautiful song. Thanks for sharing.

  • Charles Aznavour is simply one of the best singers and all the beautiful and passionate songs remind of precious moments in my life.

  • merci Charles

  • Charles, I have always wanted to tell you what an impact you have had on my life. I was in my teens when I fell in love with you and your music, have seen you many times over the years, am sixty five years old now and still play your songs constantly. I think I have them all. You are a true artist.

  • love this song

  • Charles, You, will be young forever, I loved you then and always will.!!! Saw you in Buenos Aires, Argentina, you still sexy and nice looking as always. blessings !!!

  • como é gostoso ouvir Chales Aznavour,a musica soa no tempo igual a nossa infancia

  • it sounds so much better in franch

  • ARMENIAN PRIDE

  • very moving a great artist.. if you want to look for the female version .. look for nora aunor very enchanting voice also... : > )

  • i feel like crying!!!!!

  • one of my favorite songs. the whole life of a great person in a beautiful and touching music.

  • In my opinion, the message of this song can be appreciated most when you are on the sunset of your life, that all you have to do is reminisce the past especially during the time when your life is at its peak.

  • Roy Clark owns this song... but maybe if I heard Aznavour since it in his native language... he sounds bland in English...

  • One of the best songs ever. The lyrics, the performance, the music, everything is just amazing! Thanks for sharing!

  • Beautiful song!

Gracias Charles Aznavour y gracias por ponerlo.

  • first time i her this song was by Roy Clark also nice but by Charles is more real and takes you back in your youth remembering many things where the world was much more secure relax with respect for all things the technology has made dangerous evil unfriendly unstable love for fellow men has cool of big time poor youth -in love with his i pot

  • this seems to be the best version of his own song that has been recorded and shown in youtube, much better in my humble opinion than his performance of the same in carnegie hall. thank you very much for posting.

  • Ça fait trop bizarre en anglais !!!!

  • the most beautiful and meaningful one that ive ever heard

  • The music at the last part is so beautiful ... the whole song actually .

  • Yesterday when I was young......but today when I am older I recall those beautiful sunny days filled with boyhood crushes on lovely girls in school....of a simpler America and a safer one too. Innocence abound and now as the autumn of my life approaches, it seems so sad but live is still beautiful. The world was a better place then and unfiortunately America enjoyed her best of times back then also. I shutter at what the future holds. Enjoy life to the fullest and keep chasing your dream..

  • @lovethediscogirls

I share your feelings...memories are beautiful, even if they are sad memories, for without memories, we will never be who we are now...

  • i love this song , i always remember this song to the one i love first . when i was young .

  • Those 4 people must be deaf ...

  • @AngelinaUSA

    I couldn't agree more!

  • only one word: magnifique!

  • This song makes me miss the "good young time" - but I lived! if I did the right choices or decision it was part of growing up and who I was at a certain time.

Yes and I was in tears, missing people who has left my life quietly or with a storm..

  • A song to reminisce to. Nearly brings a tear to my eye.....

  • Very true and so great! Thanks

  • Lovely song..Charles, i think you guys took away beautiful music when you left the world, today music just suck...

  • i'm italian and i prefer the italian version " ieri si da giovane" i was born in 1971 and this song remember me my father ...... when i was a child he alwas listen aznavur great version...

  • He is one of the great Armenian Artist.

  • He's a GREAT MAN! And there will never be another Charles Aznavour...

  • kako pijesma kida....

  • this song always bring a tear too my eyes

    time goes by so quickly

  • We should pay certain tribute here to Herbert Kretzmer for the wonderful translation of Aznavour's original brilliant score (Hier Encore) into English. Kretzmer's lyrics we are listening to here are a 'genial marriage' to the music of Charles Aznavour & Georges Garvarentz to become what we know as this beautifully moving song ..... "Yesterday When I Was Young."

  • @4composer

You are real feeler you can understand the words...the music and the voice...congrats

    Sylva Portoian,MD

  • i am 67 and still feel fire when i here him

  • This song also featured in 1975 in the movie "Hustle" - Burt Reynolds & Catherine Deneuve starred in it.

  • ...sadly this is the most true ever written...

  • one of the best songs ever written and sung...

  • Ok...now I'm crying. Thinking back when......

  • This song makes me feel even more miserable each time I listen to it.

I know I don't have much to live as my heart is no longer strong enough. And life...

Life is such a film that you cannot re-wind and watch it again. All I could depend on is my tear drops, by which I hope my past might be reflected. YESSS-TER-DAAAAAYYY... WHEN I WAAAAAS YOUNG...

  • i agree... every time i listen to this song i always feel like i want to go back to where i used to get along with my old folks and enjoy life the way i want. i really miss them so much! i'm not old yet but i know i will, and when i,m old, how i wish i could still do the things i used to do with all of my friends and do it again for the very last time. this song makes my tears fall and think of what lies ahead of life....for me to make the most out of whats left for me. ;-)

  • @bloodsplurt007 I am with you. Everytime I listen to this song I must cry , makes me so sad, memories... loves... everyhing never comes back , enjoy life now !!!!!

  • We are all forever young

  • ♪♫♥ !

  • the story of my life !!!

  • very good song! it makes me think of those times i have lost and prepare for what lies ahead of life... very sentimental song. i really love it.

  • every man will relate to this song sometime in there lives

  • Aznavour with his songs somehow always touches something very deep inside. He is the greatest, no doubt. As poet, as a singer, as a compoeser, as a person

  • His native tongue is French but he writes such beautiful words in English - a very special gift!

  • Thoughtful lyrics. Reminiscent of "I wish I knew then what I know now".

  • Everyone thinks Charles is French and he is I guess...culturally. But he's an ethnic Armenian.

Thank goodness Attaturk and his pals didn't get their hands on Charles' forebears in 1915.

  • When Roy Clark did this song, I was impressed...now, I'm smitten with the author of it...Charles...he emotes in a way that only the writer can do...

    What a stylist..

    Larry

  • Charles Aznavour is one of the best singers ever

  • "How about a 24 year old guy who..."

Great comments. At various moments in our lives we have such different perspectives--some which can't be understood until we are older...how true and how insightful.

  • Don't waste your life .... it's not eternal...

  • BRAVISSIMO CHARLES AZNAVOUR AND THIS SONG

  • I love thsi song, he is a great singer, my sister liked to listen this fantastic lyric and I grow up listening and loving this song.

  • Truly fantastic lyrics. This English version is not bad, but iIf you can read French, the words are even more poignant and better suited to the melody. Priceless.

  • @Doro7431

    absolutely true!

eddy arnold version maybe better in english though but overall aznavour sing it more poignantely especialy in french.

  • ,..........

  • Moving!

  • I feel the tears roll down my face as I think about the years gone by

  • @kitkatkaraoke What about the years waiting to be lived?

  • @hommefriday that's one optimistic line. Comming from a tan go lover river plate native, I feel totaly realted to this lyric. Future is uncertain, happyness is always in the past, never in the future. By definition, present doesn't exist, nor does future, only past.
