  • Did anyone actually use Windows 1.0 as a day to day environment when it came out? This video is the only one I have ever seen of Windows 1.0 actually being used to create documents and get work done.

  • wow, look! it can show 3 and more windows simultaneously. Windows 8 will be a disaster, because it can only operate with one window.... nostradamus was right... 2012 will be the end. Windows 1 will be better than windows 8.

  • this first edition of Windows does look pretty close to Mac OS. Just stating the facts, please don't flame me.

  • I'm trying to figure out why I changed it to 360p

  • IBM 127 7/8

    AAPL 15 3/8

    CMPQ 11

  • Looks good to me. Where do I buy?

  • Lets you run most powerful tommorow apps.

    Seems legit.

  • Still better then vista.

  • i wonder if its running crysis 2.

  • @itayatas1 of course

  • Does anyone know where I can download an emulator or something for this?

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Now I know why they call it "windows"!

    I feel so smart!

  • Actually I never noticed until now. The windows 1 taskbar is awfully like the windows 7 taskbar.

  • Computer back then were such business oriented machines back then, that was their selling point pie charts and spreadsheets it's crazy to see how much we have evolved in the technology world, where it used to be only adults that used them it is now mostly kid's who need to explain computers to them!

  • wow never seen this os before oldest ive seen was 3.1

  • @MrTvshowclips this isnt the oldest... its the first one

  • Try playing Black Ops with this xD!1 frame an hour

  • @Mrsteelkiller

I´m afraid if won´t even start.

  • @TheHJman I'm afraid there would be no way to even get the installation files on to the system.

  • @Mrsteelkiller You'd be lucky to even get that, lol.

  • I know my Win7 pretty well. but if you put me to work with Win1.0, I'll lose myself. Too difficult to understand..trust me.

  • YAY, this video helped me out with my term paper! :D

  • 7:13 And there's even a clock!!!!

  • We've come a long way, baby.

  • @LunchAnderson We? if if was for you we would still running Windows 3.11!

  • @VictorHugo289mex Uh... ehm... huh? You've never heard that expression before, have you?

Everyone who thinks I'm saying that you should thank me personally for any version of Windows, raise your hand!

  • Just looking at all the comments. I remember when this was the 3D/HD of it's time. When you guys get old people are going to be saying the same thing! about your 3d/hd When envirmental 3d comes out and dynamic HD2 comes around. ;)

  • Can it fun Crysis?

  • I would love to see Avatar in 3D HD with that crap! :P

  • I installed Windows 1.01 on my 2nd PC (1,6 GHz AMD Athlon, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD), and it didn't have any problem. I couldn't install the mouse, however, because it only supports bus and serial mouses. And, besides that, the partition size limit is 32 MB's...

  • @TobiasTheebe I installed the Windows 3.11 in a Pentium 4, 2GHz, 1GB ram and ti worked too! It even detected my USB mouse! I just had it for about 15 minutes because I was just playing around and I had to install XP but I cound swear, omg, that I heard the start sound! How did that happen? I don't know, my computer uses AC '97 codec, how did it acess that?!

  • wtf wut is dis?

  • I'd get windows 1.0 over and iPod Touch anyday of the week.

  • joder balla windows

  • This was quite pathetic compared to the earliest Apple operating systems. I prefer Windows 7 over the latest Mac OSes, though.

Windows never REALLY got going until 3.0.

  • Windows 1 is awesome. I do not know what everyone's problem is.

  • Pretty good for being 1986 :)

  • The Best Windows!!!!Very nice :D

  • The taskbar Looks like the windows 7 one ---- Only black & White, with the start orb missing!!!

  • @azuro197 Black & White is Monochrome (1-bit color) ;-)

  • This demo video is actually from 1983, predating Macintosh System 1 by one year.

  • Blue Screen of Boringness

  • I love how the taskbar of Windows 7 looks exactly like the one in Windows 1. :P

  • @sf2sander Windows 7 taskbar is not like Windows 7!!! ;-)

  • good for #business type work to me

  • why is there no sound

  • @exposed97 Still using Amiga OS today :) (ver4.1)

  • Was that Bill Gates sitting in the chair at the end?

  • Its funny - old computers had a memory limit of only 120k. I have saved images to my computer that took up 109k of my memory.

  • @blockbeata #LOL #FAIL

  • How much did one of these things cost when first released???

  • Comment removed

  • @zonemad96 could you imagine typing that and not being able to spell or use grammar

  • @muffinz1005 -_-

  • @zonemad96 Written language survives by agreement to conform to a basic set of spelling and grammar, for the sake of communication. You just killed the purpose of having a written language.

  • shhhhhhh im sleeping LOL

  • "And there's even a clock."

    ROFLMAO

What's the point of clock, if most of PCs (IBM PC and IBM PC XT) back then didn't had battery backed RTC's? You got to set them up every time you start your machine, like in DOS :)

  • @ZXRulezzz not true, i had an IBM PC 8086 one of the first ever, and it had a battery backed clock that worked just fine.

  • @basehead617 I never seen any PC or XT motherboard that had built in RTC, of course no doubt it could be added as expansion card thru ISA. But I never seen such cards either. The built in RTC thing started from IBM PC AT as far as I remember. I had AT style motherboard with 80286 CPU and RTC built in.

P.S. And I bet those batteries were pain in the ass when they started to leak, because they were soldered in the motherboard :D

  • Or you could get a GUI that worked, like QDesktop or Gem. Windows 1.0 was just anothe GUI, not an OS, and not a very good one at that...

  • Xd "windows lets you use tomorrow's most POWERFUL ones" i think 25 kb of RAM ain't very powerful :)

  • Well...Its better than Vista.

  • You can now... DRAW A LINE!!!!! JUST BY OPENING WINDOWS PAINT! OMG AINT THAT THE BEST?!?!?!?

  • I'm an Amiga user, but I like Windows too!

  • where's T-800 when you need him....

  • where is halo 3?!

  • I have Windows 1 on VirtualPC. Too bad I can't find any of the apps here as disk images. If you know where to find them, make sure to tell me, 'kay?

  • @HYAAALP vetusware has a lot of this old software

  • @dan1986ist : AWESOME

  • im running this right now on my pc how do i burn cds

  • If you would have asked that question in the early 80's, the response would have been "why would you want to?"

  • the disburseent of process code is file component, the file ope system shows doc wave in partition mode the data switch appears to be using file +|- AI ration to get performance speed in presentation transition and opaque permeation -data paging|collation (dpc system nonL file-type, fontnode ent qr defquote)

  • we keep getting new windows versions because windows vista buttfucked windows 7 and sent the children back to 1993to spread word of windows upcoming succsess. since they put their children in the 90's, we are stuck in a loop of buttfucking sensation, though it doesnt seem like it.

  • 7:12, THIS is what Steve Balmer was talking about, A CLOCK!

  • best os ever

  • @Aqwert76

    It is a Operation Environment.

    Not a Operation System.

  • And how many floppies did you need to switch? xD

  • Did the terminal program dial into BBS? Were the BBS all text-based?

  • the icon system of Windows 1.0

    is similar to Windows 7 x D

  • I dont understand how this is susposed to have ripped off mac number one its horrible.

  • look at mac os 1.0

microsoft stole major source code from apple

  • I just dont see it the early windows didnt use icons it used an exe menu. to start the programs yeah the windows and mouse are resizable but so were everybody elses. The mac gui was not the first gui.

  • xerox made the first gui which WAS publicly open , they gave apple programmers permission to analyse how it works (note microsoft also saw it)

last time i checked windows 1.0 didnt allow windows to overlay which is totally lame

your comment about the mouse didnt make sense (mouse is resizeble?)

so no the mac gui wasnt the first but it was the first time it was accesible to normal people , windows basically ripped off every single gui element in mac os at that time

  • I think I've shat more sophisticated code than this.

  • Lets you exceed the 640K memory limit! :O

    I heart Bill Gates.

  • @AndyBearman Ha, and to think he said 64kb would be suffice for everyone.

  • it was better then xp XD

  • yerr

  • lol windows

  • By temporary I meant planned to be temporary.

  • Introductory offer? Paint & WordPad look to still coming with Windows today. Guess sme temporary things are hard to get out of, Microsoft...

  • Oh, this brings back so many memories. :D

As for Vista, it was okay. It had serious flaws, but wasn't so bad. It's heart was in the right place. Now we have Windows 7, which I have used extensively. I'm an OS X user and have Boot Camp, and Win7 runs on it flawlessly, so I will gladly pick that up when it goes on sale.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane, GregorRichards!

  • vista did improve on xp in many way but Microsoft rushed it out of development to compete with the new version of os10 for mac, windows 7 is what vista should of been, vista is ok but 7 is the best os from Microsoft i have ever used

  • hahahaha, rushed it out of development. It was in development for 6 years. SO what you are saying is that Microsoft rushed out a product that they knew wasn't ready, and was inferior to the competition, just to save some market share? How's that for a big middle finger to their customers?

  • i must say that the fact that Microsoft did rush vista was not at all how they should treat there customers, but if you remember before xp there was win 2000, me, and NT, all where precursors to what xp would become, it seems that Microsoft like's to put out alot of bs os's, takes the best parts from each one to build to one solid os. there marketing strategy needs to change

  • wow.......windows 7 is great....hopefully someday i can use windows 7...

  • I want to run crysis on that! XD

  • get about 1 frame an hour :D

  • get about 100 BSoD's a minute

  • @legomaniacman ok lets try GTA 4 on this now. LOL! :D

  • @legomaniacman thats pro considering you have 1 bit of memory

  • yeah but this doesnt have many features it wont work whith a lot of hardware and doesnt have wireless functionality

  • i like that windows better than vista

  • I Agree wit u, Ozzy. THIS IS BETTER THAN VISTA

  • hell yeah!!!

  • Hating vista doesn't make you cool anymore

  • i don't care if im cool or not... honestly... i don't give a flying fuck... and im tired of all this bullshit... fucking tired off it.

  • That's right. All these fucktards are just FOOLED and Blinded from the truth that Vista is a chunk of shit.

  • thank you.

  • yeah xp is da best vista is a motherfucking piece of shit

  • Yup, you people can thumbs down all my comments if you want, but I truly believe that Vista is a sack of junk

  • the man speaks truth

  • Has anyone below me ever used Vista? If yes, was it for more than 10 minutes? If you answered no to either of those questions, congratulations; you're full of shit.

I agree that XP is better; in fact, I use it myself. But hell, Vista has just as many improvements as it has faults. It's better to be ahead technology-wise, honestly. It's definitely okay to use XP now, but once Windows 7 comes out, you're going to want to go with either it or Vista.

  • I use windows 7 now! XD

  • Eh, 7 is good, but I'm waiting until it's released in stores for various reasons

  • Who can deny that the clock is a super incentive?!

  • ooooooooooooo que bacano lo boy aitalar para que mi pc me corra mas rapido jajaja no pero enserio esta bacano

  • ... qui-et? It's quiet because it has no sound whatsoever, as Windows 1 didn't have support for sound (as far as I know, although I'm sure programs could access sound cards directly).

  • @GregorRichards

    yes...but it have a super-computer-BEEP

  • LOL I love the graphics 8D

  • Bill basically stole his way into becoming so big. Research it

  • I bought some sour grapes. Perhaps you'd like to try some?

  • those were the days ;)

  • I remember this, I used to use Paint alot.

  • Yeap i used to paint alot when i was a boy. What in an age we lived in.

  • the real windows version...!

  • so Can Crysis run on this lol? haha oh the old days.

  • Cutting edge technology!!!

  • OH MY GOSH! this looks very old to me

  • This calculator was so simple ! I can't imagine why Microsoft didn't implemente neither "cos" nor "sin", etc.

  • lol, my ms calculator says 2 + 2 is 1.290878970887.

  • My god fanboys have no limits people talking crap about MS and Apple its so damn funny.

  • I know. Apparently this is very divisive retro :P

  • the first gui os was a mac.

  • First GUI was Xerox

  • Which never actually become a real OS. The Macintosh was the real first OS to have a GUI.

  • no, it actually was linux

  • it wasn't. Learn some history.

  • technically it was UNIX which Linux is derived from.

  • No it's not, the first OS was Xerox Alto which was integrated in Lisa and The Macintosh.

  • It was unix based if I am correct.

  • No, it wasn't really. It was made by some Xerox developers, nothing to do with UNIX. All the other OSes copied Macintosh's interface later.

  • Ah, the Mac's first copy...

  • /me walks into Best Buy.

Me: "I would like one Microsoft please. Yes, I would like to purchase one Microsoft."

    Best Buy moron: "...?"

  • im just saying that microsoft is better faster and amazing.otherwise bill would not become the most richest man in the wrld.

  • he isn't. It's richard branson, well, that's what I heard.

  • its's actually... warren buffet?

  • Just because more people are using Windows doesn't make it better, or faster, or amazing.

  • 7:14 AND THERE'S EVEN A CLOCK!

  • 6:14 omg 8 disk drives. What kind of computer is that?

  • Most machines had 3 drives (Two Floppy, and one hard drive (if you were rich). The extra drives were virtual. In DOS you would subst a directory for a drive (assign a drive letter to a directory folder) so you could keep Excel files in drive E, word files in drive W - think of shortcuts today.

  • Build a time machine go back in time and show those low-tech geeks a laptop!

  • If you did that they would steal the technology, reverse-engineer it, ruin Microsoft and become the richest people on the planet.

  • No you goes Back to the future™ before that happens!

  • Well actually there was plenty of tech to go around then. MS Windows 1.0 came out in 1985, and if you have a look at the video "Knowledge Navigator" 1986 from Apple Computer it shows what industry geeks wanted to make back then. A geek from that time would have been disapointed that in 23 years time batteries and screens had not evolved further. For example todays screens are fragile, non flexible, don't scale and use too much power. Batteries are still heavy and dont last long.

  • como pasan los tiempos... el 1.0 blanco y negro solo podia hacer estadisticas y poseia calendario y reloj... ahora tenemos al vista ultimate 64k :O y muy pronto el vi-enna!!

  • Pretty advanced for an old PC!

  • i know why ppl had computers in the late 80's-to be show-offs with their "fancy, 1 kb memory thingies :D" and now we've got "flat screen, very fancy, 200 kb memory thingies, plus internet, lotsa games, videos, pictures and al kindsa crud :D" either way i guess you could say that old computers were high tech to the ppl who had them back then as one of thos touch-screen laptops ive seen before are now.

btw- dont take this message as an inult, im actuallt trying 2 b nice ;)

  • "1 kb memory [...] now we've got [...] 200 kb memory"

What kind of memory are you talking about? Computers with 1 kb RAM are from the mid 70's and the pc I'm using now has 720896 kb RAM. Are you talking about cache memory or something?

  • The usual memory shipped on a higher end 8086 machine was 640K. You could puchase extened or expanded memory, 256 K or 384 K that Windows on DOS could use. Cache memory would not available until 10 years after Windows 1.0 came out wth the Pentium Pro in 1995..

  • Wow...this is awesome. Can I get this at Best Buy? I can't believe how high-tech this is, although I'll miss my old DOS computer system.

  • Looks like something that should have been released in 1975, rather than 1981 - what a joke!!

  • And thats why they called it windows..

  • i remember that my granddad told that the first pc they had did have 1 mb ram

  • 1 mb or ram owns man lol id kill to have that:D j.k

  • your grandad was lying to you..

when he was young computers were still in their infancy and first personal computers available were endowed with just a few kilobites

maybe there have been a misundertanding .. he meant 1 kb

  • Maybe he got his pc in the late 80's?

  • I remember Expanded Memory boards. Extra 64MB of RAM through a 260-something KB window through Physical RAM. It was slow, but it was awesome for the time. I also remember when the Upper Memory bug was found, so we could load one program into there. It was usually the DOS kernel.

Those were the days... though now we don't need drivers for our RAM. Hooray :P

  • Rather use this than Vista...

  • Oh my god, there's even a clock! I can't believe it!
