She hated that MGM would put her in leading roles and would only put her in movies as a singer, but would rather her play characters that was loose and whores. She wouldn't do it and MGM would suspend her for months.
all you people sound freaking stupid..the problems that they had in her time are NOT here today. you didnt have to deal with using colored bathrooms, are being abused and chase by dogs, crosses burning on your lawn , u never marched down any damn street for civil rights because you were look upon as inferior. that was the porblems of those days. so before you start saying stupid shit like we still go through racism today than analyze yourself..because you seem to be the only person think of it
@MCalixte89 First, please keep it civil! Second, the whole reaction to Pres. Obama is the most clear evidence that racism is alive and well. We went through eight years of the worst president ever that violated civil liberties, dragged us into immoral, illegal wars, and crashed the nation's economy. And yet, there is large population that thinks Obama is a sign of the apocalypse ... simple, pure racism!
I am not black but I can still see the racism that black people endure. It is definitely still there. I am latina and even my community still experiences racism. It is disheartening to a young black person when they continually get pulled over by cops for no reason. Happens a lot in my community too.
@wikiriwhi I agree 100% Maybe Obama will say something posthumously. She had a struggle not only with race, but 100 times worse with gender. and McCarthy ... that's something I'm glad I wasn't alive to witness. he owes millions of apologizes.
@zoe2020 I believe it is safe to say that Lena had more propblems with being black than she did with being a woman. White women were the stars of Holywood. They had many roles. Black women had none. The operative word is Black. Racial discrimination was prevalent then and it still is now. They denied racial prejudice then as they do now.
@itsme30518 i said 100 times worse because black women were treated worse than anyone else. black men had more opportunity than black women. racial discrimination is definitely still prevalent. but so is sexism... and sexism doesn't see color today. lena is not only an inspiration to african americans, she's an inspiration to all women, no matter what color they may be. she kicked down a lot of doors and i salute her.
@zoe2020 I see the clarification. I do agree that both racisim and sexism is a huge problem then and today. It is worse for black women simply because black women fit into both categories; but in the words of Maya Angelou--"...and still I rise."
@itsme30518 It is NOT worse for black women and black women DO NOT fit into both categories. Sexism is a term that describes the so called plight of WHITE WOMEN ONLY - Not Black women. In the black community "sexism" is REVERSE. It is the BLACK MALE who is the primary target. In higher education, the black male disappears, but you still have majority black women in grad schools etc... The prisons are populated with BLACK MALES, and a Black Woman can get a job faster than a black man ... Cont'd
@greatbydesign33 You are very misguided. The divide and conque tactic is at play in your mind. I wont get into a debate as to who has it worse within the black community. I think most would agree that it is black women. Black men are often their own worse enemy,. Many who are in prison ACTUALLY committed crimes. No one forces black men today NOT to attend college. These issues black men must face and rectify if they wish to heal. The issues with black women have nothing to do with this.
@itsme30518 Cont'd ... Black women get jobs MUCH faster than black males because Black women are not a threat to white male dominance in the office the way a black man is. Corporate America is threatened by black males. As a consequence of these and other variables, black women earn more money than black men do. Sexism is a term for white women.

Uncle Sam owed her and many others a huge apology.
And should have criminalised McCarthy posthumously.
