I remember short scenes from this movie, as my dad had it on VHS. Always was intrigue to see it but never thought I had time for the 6 hrs. Just finished watching it on Netflix with Wife. It was the best of the few Westerns I've seen. Felt the apple on my throat at the end. 10/10
Just watched all the episodes great production. Could you imagine having to wait for news of what occurs for so long? We can play poker with someone thousands of miles away just for the hell of it. Recently I drove from Cave Creek Az 1200 miles under 24 hours legally. Sure you have your jet setters but the averag man can be clear on the other side of this continent within 3 days on his own should he decide to do it. Sure some romanticize living in that era but it really sucked for most.
I have watched Lonesome Dove so many times that I know most parts word for word. It's the best movie and book ever. I might have to put the DVD in tomorrow and watch it again.
The Witte Museum here in San Antonio did a exhibit of the original photography of the film. It was neat, they had some of the original props and whatnot.
@Peterbiltluver True. I read "Comanche Moon" that describes the circumstances of Josh Deets' origins. However, in the original novel, "Lonesome Dove" Deets is described as wearing patched clothing, an unerring predictor of weather and a love and familiarity of the Rio Grande area. To me these implied he was black Seminole. I was disappointed how this origin was changed, but most authors are similarly inconsistent.
Does anyone have the scene where Call is alone on the plains by his campfire while taking Gus's body back to Texas? For some reason, that's my favorite scene even though there's no dialogue.
McMurtry's novel was based on a screenplay he wrote with Peter Bogdanovich for a movie with John Wayne, James Stewart, and Henry Fonda! While they were writing it, Bogdanovich would read the dialogue in his flawless impressions of the three actors. When I first saw the miniseries I pictured them in the parts, although the TV cast was also great.
Not really a western movie fan, but Lonesome Dove is by far one of the greatest stories ever told. From the book, to the movie, to the soundtrack, this is storytelling at it's finest. There will never be another Augustus McCrae or Woodrow F. Call......oh and Lori Darlin. :) This is one that I get swept away in everytime.

Yeah, this is definitely one of my favorite movies. Like many others, I watched it with my dad many times growing up, and still watch it with him once in a while.
