  • And we saw it all at once. 6 hrs straight. 12-6am. And we still could've seen more..

  • I remember short scenes from this movie, as my dad had it on VHS. Always was intrigue to see it but never thought I had time for the 6 hrs. Just finished watching it on Netflix with Wife. It was the best of the few Westerns I've seen. Felt the apple on my throat at the end. 10/10

  • Why don;t they make them like this anymore

  • I love this western, it's gonna be hard to find some good ol boys to replace them!!!!!!

  • my frined Cody Lynn Wilkins thinks that all westerns are gay

  • @steventaylorcasey your friend Cody is probably Gay himself

  • I don't understand the 2 people who disliked this. Are they martians from outer space??? How can you NOT like this? This is EPIC!

  • "Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago" and the best western ever.

  • uva uvam vivendo varia fit

  • I told you 1000 times Woodrow, it ain't greek it's latin! Well, it's a motto...it just says itself!

  • WE DONT RENT PIGS!!!

  • Just watched all the episodes great production. Could you imagine having to wait for news of what occurs for so long? We can play poker with someone thousands of miles away just for the hell of it. Recently I drove from Cave Creek Az 1200 miles under 24 hours legally. Sure you have your jet setters but the averag man can be clear on the other side of this continent within 3 days on his own should he decide to do it. Sure some romanticize living in that era but it really sucked for most.

  • wow even optimus prime watched lonesome dove lol...

  • This really is one of the best western films ever made!!!

  • what's with the guy at 0:25?

  • the voiceover/narrator for the trailer is Optimus Prime.

  • I have watched Lonesome Dove so many times that I know most parts word for word. It's the best movie and book ever. I might have to put the DVD in tomorrow and watch it again.

  • @allis40 I said virtually the same thing before I read your comment. Agreed!

  • The Witte Museum here in San Antonio did a exhibit of the original photography of the film. It was neat, they had some of the original props and whatnot.

  • Doesn't the book imply that Josh Deets is Black Seminole?

  • @Larrymh07 No he was from louisiana it said it in the prequel it implied he was a slave set free after his owner died

  • @Peterbiltluver True. I read "Comanche Moon" that describes the circumstances of Josh Deets' origins. However, in the original novel, "Lonesome Dove" Deets is described as wearing patched clothing, an unerring predictor of weather and a love and familiarity of the Rio Grande area. To me these implied he was black Seminole. I was disappointed how this origin was changed, but most authors are similarly inconsistent.

  • Does anyone have the scene where Call is alone on the plains by his campfire while taking Gus's body back to Texas? For some reason, that's my favorite scene even though there's no dialogue.

  • The characters made this series so amazing <3

  • I agree. Greatest movie of all time. It changes you.

  • McMurtry's novel was based on a screenplay he wrote with Peter Bogdanovich for a movie with John Wayne, James Stewart, and Henry Fonda! While they were writing it, Bogdanovich would read the dialogue in his flawless impressions of the three actors. When I first saw the miniseries I pictured them in the parts, although the TV cast was also great.

  • Lonesome Dove series one of greatest movies ever made.

  • FPSKyle

  • Robert Duvall is one of the greatest actors ever!

  • Not really a western movie fan, but Lonesome Dove is by far one of the greatest stories ever told. From the book, to the movie, to the soundtrack, this is storytelling at it's finest. There will never be another Augustus McCrae or Woodrow F. Call......oh and Lori Darlin. :) This is one that I get swept away in everytime.

  • ooo i remember watching this as a kid and i've been looking for the title for a long time... i loved this show but it was so sad

  • Optimus Prime...I mean Peter Cullen did the narration. Distinctive voice.

  • One fantastic movie and book. Larry McMurtry is one talented story teller.

  • Where can i watch this on the internet huge fan in westerns, havnt gt money to buy it atm! help wld b really nice!

  • EXCELLENT!

  • Simply the greatest storytelling on TV EVER! Gus & Woodrow, legends!

  • If you've never watched this movie, watch it. If you have.....do it again and again.

  • Best Movie Ever made no question about it

  • I agree, best movie ever made.

  • this is an amazing movie and the book 1 of the best iv read i love it

  • this is one of my all time fav westerns

  • Easily the best mini-series of all time.

Saludos e igualmente, estoy a tus órdenes.

  • Nuevamente te agradezco mucho tu amabilidad y hospitalidad.

    Lonesome Dove, excelente serie.

Saludos desde Chihuahua, México, frontera con Texas.

  • Makes you proud to be a real cowboy straight out of the brush of TEXAS.

  • My dad and I use to watch this all the time... I don't generally like Westerns but this movie is on an entirely different level. =] =]

    I'm also 16.

  • this is just too good to be made for television! it is my favorite movie ever

  • Comment removed

  • I hated how Deets and Gus Died:( BlueDuck was cool tho lol

  • Lonesome dove, the only sequel that came close to it but not quite was return to lonesome dove the rest were shite. The big problem with return to lonesome dove was that Tommy Lee was missing.

  • What a cast! It don't get much better than this.

  • Just been watching this for the first time. Can't believe nobody recommended it to me in the past. I don't think another western could ever top this movie. Such an epic story, such rich characters.

Looking around today after watching this film makes me wonder - with all our technology and comfort, haven't we lost something of the human spirit? Men like those portrayed in this film are no more.

  • @bigtequila just finished watching this a few minutes ago myself............AWESOME. Couldn't agree with you more.

  • my mom met robert duval at the airport and got his autograph.

  • I'm watching it right now!

  • Best movie ever? Too right.

  • AGREED

  • THE BEST MOVIE IN HISTORY!!!

  • Best mini series ever? YES

  • @meladorimagpie amen, bro.

  • Yeah, this is definitely one of my favorite movies. Like many others, I watched it with my dad many times growing up, and still watch it with him once in a while. First western movie i've ever seen and probably the greatest too. No other western even comes close to this one; it's a classic film, and i'm very fortunate to own it.

  • The greatest movie ever made. I've never seen anything like this before and never will in my lifetime. Thank the Lord I was alive to watch this movie.

  • this is one of my favorite movies ever. first watched it when i was three with my dad. i didnt understand it but i told my dad i thought gus was beautiful. i cry evertime i see it even tho i know what is going to happen

  • Optimus?

  • Amazing, just bought it for 14 bucks. would have paid 100.

right up there with Forrest Gump.

  • 1987

  • when was it made

  • peter cullen narates the trailer

  • Best mini-series I've ever, ever seen.

  • best book ever, best movie ever. Gus is my all time hero....hell of a vision

  • i cried when gus died i was only 12 years old

  • My grandfather loved this film. I remember atching it with him back in 1988 when it aired on TV. I remember playing Lonesome Dove after that with him. He'd be blue Duck and I'd get to be any good character I wanted to. I just picked the DVD up about 2 weeks ago. I'm 26 years old now and its weird how I can remember a good amount of the film. It wasnt until I watched it again where I realized that there are so many different themes in this film. The most important above all else- That 1 friend.

  • read the novel, the best book you will read.

  • This is such a great story....I have the DVDs and watch them at least once a month....great story of the hardships, lifestyle, and a great incorporation of personal story into an epic that will span years....Lonesome Dove is spectacular!

  • duvall is awesome but tommy lee jones couldnt do any better capt. call

  • Best western of all time.

  • duvall and tommy lee need to make another western together before one of them dies.

  • I heard Robert Duvall is going to be a new Western this year called "A Night in Old Mexico" I really hope it works out and they make it.

It would be pretty cool if Tommy Lee Jones is in it too, but I doubt it will happen.

    Great movie though.

  • I dont think Ive seen a finer movie in my life.

  • I wholeheartedly agree. And reading the novel was an exercise in pure joy. "Dead Man's Walk," "Streets of Laredo," and "Comanche Moon" were fine books, too, but "Lonesome Dove" was (as the promo above said) a masterpiece.

  • maybe the best movie i've ever seen....

  • A Lonesome Dove trailer narrated by Optimus Prime...awesomeness overload.

  • So great. I love this movie. And now, tonight Comanche Moon is ending.

  • Not only is it the best--- I'd go as far as saying that there will never ever be another one equal to it! The story, the actors, the locations, and the that music--- will never be matched.

  • i agree 100%

  • I could watch this series a thousand times and never get tired of it.

  • Robert Duvall put out his best acting performance in this film. He was amazing.

  • Whoa, that was Optimus Prime doing the voiceover!

  • The best mini-series of the 80's. "The older the violin, the sweeter the music."- Augustus McCrae

  • Best miniseries........period

  • Awesome! I remember watching it when it originally aired. I love the mini-series and the book.

  • I don't remember seeing this trailer on TV years ago. Thanks for making my day by posting something 'new' about my favorite movie of all time.

  • Yes there was nothing quiet like this one.Sorry to know about 3:10 to Yuma. They're running the old one on Encore Western.

  • They don't make'em like this anymore. And probably never will.

I saw 3:10 to Yuma last week. What a disappointment.

  • one of my favite western

  • This was the greatest movie ever made.

  • Thanks for the post, man i swear i've got tears in my eyes just watching Capt. Call say...

    Hell of a Vision....

  • One of the greatest movies of all time.

  • I love this movie

  • thepond99..

    you are an educated man.

  • can someone make a movie featuring lonsome doves feamale chrecters to the the song milkshake by kelis.

    including Elmira Clara and Lorie

  • absolutely best western

  • "uva uvam vivendo varia fit"

  • definatly the best western ever

  • This is the all time best movie!

  • Robert Duval is quite an actor. He was better as Gen. Robert E Lee in Of Gods and Generals. Way better than Martin Sheen did Lee... I can't wait for Last Full Measure to be made by Ted Turner

  • Ellie is my favorite charecter

  • Excelent western !

  • THE BEST!

  • this is my all time favorite movie!!! the best ever made.

  • James Garner was originally cast as Gus but he had serious health problems and had to bow out giving Duvall the best roll of his career. Garner was later cast as Captain Call in the sequel, Streets of Laredo.

  • The best Western ever made. And it was made for TV. I used to think it was the Eastwood Westerns. But 'Lonesome Dove' is the best. I also heard Robert Duvall say it was his favorite part he ever played. "It aint' dying I'm talkin' 'bout. It's livin'". Ahh, so true.
