Try unwrapping it and only putting a layer of bubble wrap in. I believe the air pressure inside of the individual bubbles will rise and the the pressure will burst the bubble. Of course, if it doesn't melt first. I think the way you did it, the bubbles didn't have much room to expand, so the wrap melted before one could pop.
