The civil war really began in the Cortes, when La Passionaria told Calvo Sotelo: "This is your last speech!" Was this not a death threat? Franco was cruel, but Spain remained free, and non-communist. Can the left truly say La Passionaria was morally superior to Franco? I doubt it!

I totally agree with you andymesquita. The Republic was NOT red. What happend was that when the allies refused to help the Republic Stalin saw his apportunity and went for it. The Republic had no choice but to accept the help from Russia at a great cost to the Spanish people.
I really cant believe there are still so many fascist defending franco´s brutal regime! This was a bunch of ultraconservative fanitics that rebelled against a democraticly elected government!! could it be any clearer?? especially today... I just cant imagine that tho bloody victors are stil in power and were neve judged for killing more than 200.000 people... after the war!! PS: the reds only came in when the fellow democracies failed to help
I'm no fan of Franco personally, but I was stationed in Spain for about 7 years when I was in the military, and I can tell you for a fact that there are a LOT of old timers over there that miss the man. I think Spain went from one extreme to the other. Seems that's always the case. If only people would moderate a bit.
The richer a country is, the less disparity there is between the political parties. (Thus more moderation.)
Spain was already poor. Then there was the global depression. People took sides. It was very brutal.
Spain today is one of the richest countries in the world and as such has more moderate politics now. Both parties are democratic and don't vary significantly on too many things. They're certainly not killing each other.
Both sides were pretty horrible.

You can't rape nuns and blow up Catholic primary schools in Spain and expect to get away with it.
Spain is free today because of Franco.

Democratically elected? What a joke. Please read more about the 1936 election--the massive fraud, the numerous political killings.
