Risky pursuits - tornaodo-chasing, hurricane-chasing, volcanoes (my obsession) all I think have one thing in common. Given that, on the whole, the closer in you are the more detailed and better observations you get, it's a matter of trading personal safety against quality of observation. It's up to the scientist or documenter in question to decide where to draw that line. Risk isn't taken lightly: responsible risk is calculated risk even where it looks scary.
I think Reed does take a lot of unnecessary risks, even though it does give us some great footage; however, they tread on a thin path. There is a difference between courage and carelessness.
What that difference is depends on the person in question.
I don't condemn them by any means but I think they need to be more careful if they value their lives.

Skydiving and climbing mountains takes balls and skills are you kidding me... Who wouldn't go chase supercells and tornados all you need is a car, a cell phone, a video camera and maybe a laptop so you can watch the radar and you'll probably be even more popular because you are now a tornado spotter and plus you're saving lives. By now you would think ppl have figued out which storm is gonna form a tornado and also when and where it's gonna hit but it's been in the works for god knows how long.
there is A LOT more to it than just watching a tornado... the ones that matter are the ones that are gathering scientific data, measuring wind speed, direction, dew points, barametric pressures.. studying wind flow around structures, watching how structures are destroyed.. figuring out ways to give us better lead time in warnings.. For me it's not a joyride, it's work.. fun work.. it's not as simple as a laptop, cell phones and cameras. Though you'll need all those if you want to live !!
Best site I've seen in a very LONG time. I run a forum, but this has me in awe. You guys are crazy and have balls. I want to hang with you. Hmmm Got good video skills, but not sure if I would want to wreck my car to do it. Loving it, and we're under a moderate tomorrow. Saw some serious action in Kansas. Damn things are addictive. Well from a fan in the MW keep up the good postings.
reed and joel "bend" some rules of chase decorum.. but the footage they get is just so invaluable for study. Basically you have the perfect chasers.. educated.. a little lucky, and they got `nad.. keep it up !! someday I'll buy ya beer when you chase up here in the land of cow shit and beer farts (WI) !!
FYI, it sounded like some of you were comparing Reed to a "Phd-er"..as if he wasn't one. And, while I don't believe that he is yet, he's in school earning his PhD in meteorology right now..so he's definately NOT what you would call "all practice and no theory"
Please help: I'm starting an online fund for Reed at reedsritalinfund dot com, and you can make easy PayPal donations. Give 'til it doesn't hurt your ears anymore. Thank ye and God Bless...See ya next spring in Tornado Alley! I'll sure as F*** be there!
Kevin, in today's world, a degree means quite a lot. I admire the people who created this documentary because they're showing us a different aspect of tornado research. We need them just as much as we need anybody else in the work force. They help us further our knowledge and comprehension of Mother Nature's brute force. Thanks to all the people who contributed to the Tornado Glory documentary!
@athiestt: Actually, I agree with that Kevin dude.
If you study long enough and hard enough, you can be as qualified as someone with a degree. As a matter of fact, a degree is really just a piece of paper, once you think about it.
JaxieBoy, that's a really fuckin stupid thing to say. Some people work damn hard to earn a degree and put themselves and their families in a lot of debt to do it. That shouldn't be belittled by a little prick like you.
Tornado's are awesome! I would love to go on a chase, but the average price for a week trip is astronomical! I cannot afford to toss a few thousand away for a "chance" of seeing one? I live in Southeast Missouri....does anyone in this area do chases?
Well Kevin, a couple of things: this PBS documentary focuses on the human aspect of chasing storms, as opposed to research methods (though some of the world's top professors were contributors). Also Reed and Joel are both degreed meteorologists, with Reed currently completing his PhD. Though Reed is definitely a controversial guy!
I don't care if they are degree'd anything. I have studied it so long without a degree , and I am equivilant to a PH.D already in the subject. A degree means nothing. The Net and books you can teach YOURSELF. DOn't know when people will get that through their heads.
Dude yea, you can consume a lot of your free time studying and not get recognized for it, that's the sad truth. But the real face of the world is that you gotta have it on paper or people are just going to think you are a "know-it-all" or otherwise a guy with big claims and nothing to back it up.
Good stuff and all but seriously, you need to focus on the research more. I am from Ontario Weather Service dott comm and we charge nothing for our services. It's all free, and even if we had videos of tornadoes we wouldn't sell them. Just another pair of twits getting money for destruction.
hey guys, awesome trailer and video. Hope to pick up the DVD soon! Your so lucky to be out there on the plains...Ive always wanted to chase tornadoes...

you got to take risk tornadoes are dangerous but without this stuff we wouldnt know the dangers.
atnafter 3 years ago
I never said that storm chasing was without risks. I'm saying they need to take fewer ones if they value their lives.
After all, a person only has one life. How a person uses it depends on each individual.
Besides, real scientific information comes not from footage alone but the implementation of instruments to measure a storm formation and such.
But like I said, the footage is great regardless and I commend them for their bravery but not for carelessness.
darknesstoholy 3 years ago
im sure their very aware of what their doing if they get sucked up in the fury of the storm and die then we,ll they did their lives passion

Sounds like a lot of people envy Joel and Reed. I know I do. They are putting their $ where their mouths are and documenting their work/passion.
