I believe that an alternate form of thinking about repugnance is to think in terms of developing strong, deep conviction--in my mind, parallel to loving God with ALL the heart, mind, soul, and strength. That is, the whole being is engaged. That impacts both the positive side of living godly, and the negative of abhorring sin, does it not?
Repungence for sin is not victory over sin There is no fight with sin still existing that would be a losing battle. What sin could be fought if it has been crucified with Christ? All my sin, past , present, future is dead in Christ. There is no noble repungence of sin that will honor Christ dying for sin. Christ showed enough rebpungence for sin in His death. It is only in affection for Christ that true victory is had. Focus on sin you will sin. All devotion to Christ is concentration in victory
First you cannot reason a sinner into Christ. They will find loopholes. The law is moral but God is not moral. God is superior Virtue. God is not equal to the moral absolutes of His law. God gave a powerless law one that cannot be kept.God did not complete His revelation of Virtue in the law.! God is greater than law in Virtue. He is being perpetual in Holy Character which the law is not.The law does not drive us to Christ it could never explain Christ in morality, Christ is not moral but more.
I appreciate what these men have to say, and I'm *really* enjoying these videos, but it's hard not to be offended by Piper's comment about "wicked, liberal, left wing, sleep-around, do-drugs, swear-all-the-time people." Am I misunderstanding something or missing a nuance here? How do my "liberal, left wing" politics immediately make me a promiscuous, foul mouthed druggie?
@mylatestexcuse the idea is how liberal's TEND to use their liberties and merge their liberties and mingle it w/ what the Gospel is... the idea Paul states is using sins as a way to say because of Grace, you can do whatever you want... and that there's a difference between what they are presenting and what u are stating... politics and the Gospel are different... this is the case w/ this... so it doesn't... don't make your politics as the Gospel presentation of ur life...
@shine777, thank you for the clarification! *whew* I figured there was a difference between how I was interpreting it and the intention of his comment.
I appreciate your feedback; however, please do not accuse me of making my politics "the Gospel presentation of my life." That type of assumption is exactly what I was hurt by in my initial (mis)understanding of Piper's comment.
Their hardness prevents them from listening to someone like Washer. The soil needs to be broken up, cultivated. People listed to Tim Keller. Tim Keller is to NY as Paul was to Athens.
I am thankful for Tim Keller. I'm from NY. And it is a hardened, man centered culture. Tim Keller patiently, and wisely reasons in a God glorifying way to bring people to the truth. I myself love Paul Washer and am a better Christian for having heard his teaching, but I think he wouldn't last in NY one year. Maybe upstate NY, but not L.I. or the city. (of course unless there was a revival) And I believe the reason is, is because they won't listen, their hardness prevents them from hearing som
I am convinced that if Paul Washer had been sitting together with them, there is absolutely NO WAY he would have let him continue. Salvation is not encapsulated in a decision we are invited to make. It is the supernatural regenerative work of the Holy Spirit turning a heart of stone into one that is spiritualy alive in Christ!
Tim Keller, in trying to make a point, inadvertently offers us what he calls "the gospel presentation." In so doing, he displays his non-rejection of this commonly voiced, shallow interpretation of the precious gospel of Christ. How could he possibly regurgitate such a cliche expression and how could D.A. Carson AND John Piper BOTH sit there and nod through it?!
Note the words of Tim Keller right near the beginning of this clip:
So if I just simply say: "Accept Jesus Christ into your life as your personal savior," and that's it - uh... "turn from your s.. your wicked ways and God will forgive you" - which is perfectly right - THAT IS the gospel presentation....
santification growth by going back and thinking through how you were justified...wouldn't you want to add that as you were justified, you are now sanctified...by powerful grace that gives new life, Jesus life -
