  • Sugar cube was invented in Dačice... Next version with cube of...

    ... SEMTEX

  • Hey, Daria Klimentova! Now a huge star in the UK as well :-)

  • I love Czech ambiguity :))

Who knows, he knows. ^^ :o)

  • nice spot :)) Good thing you put those comment, because otherwise i wouldn't have understood the joke. :)

  • ^^ Czech Rap Pub und Lick => Sudetenland. ("Watch We´ll sweeten Europe" parody:

HerrGott, Das ist salz! Scheisse! >_> ;) ^^

  • But that's brillian!

  • Vaclav Klaus is great president. Greetings for Czechs ;).

  • chapave:

fucking sandnigger, communist pig, FUCK OFF

youre not welcome to Europe and especialy not in Czech republic, i will personaly shoot you and any monkey with a tablecloth you bring with you if you come close to my country

palestine is a desert in Israel

  • Go for it Czech Republic!

  • nice!

  • Dear Chapaev, if one reads your comment and clicks your nickname to see your channel, it's obvious that you one of those National Workers Party-style of activists. European institutions may have imperfections but the fight against terrorism and disgusting anti-Semitic propaganda like yours is one of the activities that it mildly pursues and it must be praised for.

Czechia won't allow any vicious attacks against Israel, our allies.

  • Did they get paid by sugar industry?

  • by british sugar co :)

  • Our gouvernment just fell. It's bad for us, this gouvernment wasn't perfect at all, but it was much better than what the today's oposition is going to do.

Anyway, our dear European friends, don't worry. The votes will be not before July. I hope our gouvernment will continue in succesful work for Europe. We helped in Gaza, about the gas problem. We trust you will say on June: "Those Czechs ruled!"

  • Yes, despite imperfections, it's sad. Prime minister Topolánek was shattered.

He will almost surely continue as the boss of the Czech EU presidency, and probably also as the boss of a provisional government that will lead our homeland to the early elections.

  • The President of the German liberal party FDP in the European Parliament, Silvana Koch-Mehrin, said recently:

"if the EU itself applied for membership of the EU, it would be refused. The reason would be: no democracy". She added: "Meanwhile more and more competences have been transferred to the EU level, without the EU structures having become more democratic".

    (German Handelsblatt newspaper ).

Vote in the June elections against EU corruption & the restoration of European democracies.

  • Lol, I wonder how the video will look like when Sweden takes over in June xD

  • ...I don't even think about that. XD

  • The weaker the EU gets, the more Putin salivates. Just remember that. I wouldn't worry too much about the Swedes.

  • Well, our Reinfeldt isn't that bad actually, but Putin can go to hell.

  • Bravo for czech presiden't :)

  • No, Vote ELDR in June!

  • STAY FREE !

The EU has all the institutions of a real state in place eg.currency (Euro),Central Bank,Justice Ministry (Eurojust),Police (Europol),their own Court,EU Parliament and un-elected Commission.

The only thing missing are ... THE CITIZENS of this "state" !

The EU is the world's first "democratic" institution where the ONLY directly-elected body ( the EU Parliament ) has NO POWER TO LEGISLATE !

VOTE in the European elections 2009 and save freedom & democracy in Europe !

  • this spot is cool. but i am afraid that in other countries is the fact that czech invented suger lump quite unknown :)

  • Well...in fact, Germans living in the Czech lands invented it. Czechs invented many things, but not this one. Our gouvernment should speak about contact lenses, polarography, genetics or lighting rod.

  • wow, your right! (I just checked on wikipedia :) ) what a twist in my life :)

  • Don't worry, we still can be proud of our science... ;-)

  • Awesome :D

  • That is a Czech phrase or saying there is no point translating it. It doesnt make any sence.

  • Fact 1.Living conditions are poor in Gaza, fact 2.Hamas started the agression by firing rockets on the state of Israel fact 3.Israeli response is too bloody..parties should declare peace ,make Hamas to stop agressions of any kind and help rebuild Gaza

  • Yes, the guilty for the dead Gaza babies ought to be punished. And the guilty are none other than the Hamas terrorists. THEY brought this upon their population. Israel has every right to defend itself, and I, a European, salute the Czechs who said it loud and clear.

  • EXTREMELY disappointing beginning for Czech presidency! So many killings in Gaza so many innocent and Czech Republic puts first its relationship with US and support Israeli war against Palestinians! But from Klaus I would never expect something better than a good commercial he is trying to make an American puppet state in Europe! Too bad for Czechs to be represented by this guy

  • President Klaus have a little influence on government policy, you should get some informations before. As you probably did not noticed, czech republic and rest of western europe regard Hammas agresion as a terrorist act against souverign democratic state. No place for such a blame.

  • Last weeks not only UN staff was killed but humanitarian aid is prevented from entering. That is definitely not a defense action by Israel as Czech Rep. is claiming. Czech didnt even seek for ceasefire and that made me angry (many EU countries opposed to the Czech announcement)

  • Dear nik24nik24, European politicians are obliged to act to protect the values of the EU citizens and not those in Trinidad and Tobago like yourself.

Czechia didn't start the strikes against Hamas ;-) but we surely do understand that countries have to be protected against terrorists and aggressors.

Incidentally, president Klaus is not too involved in the Israel issues, and he's been very courageous against the U.S. official policies, e.g. when he rejected that Iraq had WMDs.

  • So you all approve the fact that its ok civilians to be killed as long as a terrorist group is using them for human shields? But they have no freedom and no state to protect them. If I were in that position I would accept help from anyone, even if he was considered a terrorist by other countries. No my friend you have to know that Israel keeps occupying territories and isolating these areas (with the help of Egypt) which is an act of war according to the international law!

  • Dear nik24, it's a tough call but after some hesitation, I do approve of it because from a broader viewpoint, it still saves more human lives than those that are sacrificed.

Moreover, the civilians are sadly not as innocent as you suggest. Hamas couldn't operate and do all the bad things if a significant part of the Arab public in Israel failed to genuinely support them.

I consider Gaza to be a part of Israel currently plagued by organized crime - Hamas.

  • If I had no state or army or hospitals, or money or economy I would support everyone who is trying to defeat my enemy! Even a terrorist! You cannot compare Palestine to Israel, One has support from divided Arads and the other has the US. And a broader but simpler opinion is that everything is happening because the Israeli government wants to win the current elections. Sometimes its more simply than its seems. Like the Iraqi war (war against terror or war for oil as Alan Greenspan claimed)

  • You should be more informed about historical and geopolitical issues my friend. The Czech announcement was a mistake made by presidency spokesman which was stressed immediately by authorities. Israel is not innocent side of the conlfict, but isolating the areas in not act of war according to Int. law, this is misinterpretation of internati. law. Please dont read so much Al jazeera news..

  • To by mě zajímalo, kdo tohle "cukrové téma" vymyslel xD Ale originalita se cení,že.. /tedy ne u projevů některých naších politiků../

  • Ahoj! ;-)

  • Czeski film. Bez jaj :) Powodzenia!

  • We will sweeten it so much that the EU will get fat, even more than women in USA

  • oh, i am very sorry, it was for meh23p

  • Is it true that that phrase can also mean "We will heaten hell for Europe"??

  • we will cause EU to disintegrate.. sweetly lol

  • Unfortunatelly, but yes :)

  • NO... you are "very funny"

  • Why did he say yes, then?

  • Excellent clip. I have great confidence in the Czechs to lead Europe, and hope other nations will fully help them.

  • Nice clip!

Can't wait to see what the Czechs will come up with!

  • I trust we will be a good presidential country of the EU!

  • Go Tsjechie! Go Europe!

  • Hope Czech rep. will do a great job as the president, but we'll see. First you need to ratify the Lisbon treaty though...

  • Thanks for your wishes, Tupiii89. But sorry to disappoint you immediately afterwords: whether we ratify the Lisbon treaty is still up to us. And in its precise wording, your last sentence is simply incorrect. We definitely don't *need* to ratify it.

  • Here's a scenario for you: Czech rep. rejects the treaty and then tries to be a president to the EU council... I say that the presidency is doomed to "fail". So yeah, to make a decent presidency, you 'need' to ratify the damn treaty.

Nevertheless my intention was not to insult Czech republic's independence and sovereignty.

  • Dear Tupii, the end of the Lisbon treaty and its replacement by something better, more comprehensible, and fresher is one of the likely goals of the presidency and the era that will follow it.

You will see that your love to Europe will be given completely new dimensions once you will see that it can work without useless bureaucracy, irrational transfer of responsibilities to the Brussels, and without intimidation.

You may like it! Get ready! ;-)

  • lumajs, I still argue that the first thing for Czech presidency is to at least vote about the treaty. If the answer is 'yes', Ireland will be left alone and they would have enormous pressure to have another referendum.

The thing is that I really liked this treaty, and I argue that it is in the best interests of Europe!

I have also heard that your government has some problems in with it's popularity. You know that missile shield...

Nevertheless I wish you luck, you may need it!

  • Dear Tupii, Czech governments always have problems with popularity. You know, I am generally pro-radar and the radar and the Lisbon treaty are sometimes discussed as a "trade": the conservatives are supposed to agree with Lisbon while the socialists would okay the radar.

That's a ludicrous trade, of course, because the radar is an irrelevant detail in comparison with the treaty that substantially modifies the sovereignty of the nation.

Have you actually read the whole Lisbon treaty?

  • Yes, I have read the treaty, twice. I am a federalist and not afraid to admit it. I want a federal Europe. Nevertheless Lisbon doesn't take EU that way, unfortunately, but it does make it more efficient and democratic, while it doesn't remove all the problems it is a step into right direction.

What comes to the radar project it should be a matter of whole block. Russians don't like it and they may join US's arms race, effectively worsening security in my country.

  • We are supposed to be allies after all?

Think about it. A missile shield that doesn't protect Europe at all (even against Iran's missiles) and worsens the security in the whole continent? Where is the reason to have it here?

  • Dear Tupii, I am personally against Russiaphobia, too, and if the radar were openly meant to be a gadget against Russia - rather than Iran-like nations - I would oppose it. I suppose that the degree of friendship of Czechs like me to Russia resembles the Finns' relations. ;-)

Moreover, it would be useless because Russia can beat similar defense.

However, the national character of the decision is more important to me. You know, I also like Europe but unlike you, I like America, too.

  • The transatlantic relationship is very useful and it has shown to be essential for Europe's survival many times. You know, the Munich Treaty, giving 1/3 of Czechoslovakia to Hitler in 1938, was a work of the "main EU nations", MT4, namely Germany, Italy, France, and Britain.

Eventually, the Soviets and also Americans saved us from the Nazi mess. I (or we?) simply don't trust the EU powers to be 100% reliable defenders of our security. MT4 fully deciding about Czechia is a bad idea.

  • WW2 is over. To me Soviet Union was only another 3rd reich. US did liberate western Europe back then, but what about the East? It was left to the soviets. To me there were no "good guys" in WW2 and I am happy that we have forgiven those times in the EU!

What comes to the EU defense, I think serves interests of European nations better than NATO. We should be able drive for our own advantage!

  • True I don't like America, but we'll what happens when Bush leaves... America will still only care about their own national interests, there is nothing wrong in that. Maybe we should too here in Europe...

In my opinion this radar thing is not "fair". We give and what do we get in return?

  • In other words, if you expect Czechia to join another bloc of allies whose main goal is to oppose the U.S., i.e. another Warsaw Pact, you should be ready for a "No".

I don't think this was ever a theme that was promoted in the context of our EU membership. The Velvet Revolution itself was a huge step "closer to America", too. We keep fair/good relations with Russia but there's no doubt that the U.S. is a more important ally for Czechia today. And I think Europe shouldn't hate America.

  • No, no, no! I don't want the EU defense to rival the US in any aspect! To day US uses divide and rule tactics in Europe to get what they want. This should stop!

What I am basically after here is that EU should be a federal superpower. This arrangement would be the best way to protect the interests of all EU citizens.

(This conversation has come a long way from the Czech presidency lol)

  • Tupii, nations and people can behave according to their values and interests.

But what the values and Czech national interests are is decided by people in Prague after a glass of Pilsner beer, not by people in Brussels after a bottle of Finlandia vodka.

I think that there were bad guys (plus cowards) and better guys (plus heroes) in the WW II and we should never forget the history unless we want to repeat all the mistakes again.

  • What we get for the U.S. radar are partly advantages with visas and technological help, partly - more importantly - the implicit increase in the US help with our potential defense.

It's OK if you reveal your dreams about a federal European superstate. But you should understand that your personal dreams are not automatically the same thing as the wishes of the EU citizens. They're not obliged to agree with your dreams.

The Soviet & Nazi German dreams about Europe have gone unfulfilled, too.

  • lumajs, you would have gotten visa free travel to the US for free if all EU members had worked together on this one. And that defense thing... Where do you guys even need army for? The EU have pretty much removed the possibility between Member States.

You miss-construe my intentions, again. My "dream" can't be achieved without the will of the people! It would only be another Yugoslavia and we know what happened there...

  • Yes, I agree that a war among EU members is extremely unlikely now - in comparison with the 1910s or 1930s. But even without explicit wars, armies are good, at least to protect a certain dignity of a nation.

No one plans to use the army but many people, including those in the EU, could have lots of crazy and aggressive demands against Czechia that could escalate - Austrian anti-nuclear zeal, Sudeten German rights etc.

The army cools down potential hostile plans of other individual nations.

  • But hey! You are comparing my democratic and reasonable ideals with the ideals of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. That is not very nice from you! :(

In fact Nazi and soviet ideologies were closer to narrow-minded nationalism.

  • Dear Tupii, I really didn't want to suggest that your ideals are analogous. The only analogous thing is that you want all of Europe to surrender to your requests, too.

It's not true that it would be enough for the EU to "work" on it. In fact, it has worked but the work has been useless (not intense and/or genuine enough) for many years. We wouldn't enter the visa-waiver club if we didn't work on it ourselves. Another example of activity where the EU didn't work.

  • One of the most important successes of the EU is that there are no more defence needs in Europe for the most part. The era of the EU marks the longest time without a war in central Europe in history. While the US in the last 8 years has been quite busy in CREATING defence needs. We do also have to worry about national safety. But the EU is the only way to peace.

  • Dear zargorn, this is a left-wing pacifist propaganda of yours. There has been no war between 1945 and 1989 in Europe because of the mutual assured destruction of the two major blocs.

  • And there's been no European war - except for the Yugoslav battles - in the last two decades. But there's no physical law that would guarantee peace forever, and peace forever is not an infinite value, either. There are contexts that do require wars and it is damn important who wins.

America has repeatedly played an important role in helping the right side to win, and it's been doing similar things in the recent decade - although in more problematic contexts - too.

  • The EU has surely reduced the likelihood of wars on its common territory, but so did the Soviet Empire or the Third Reich. Every country has this effect because a unique sovereign over a territory always leads to fewer confrontations than two or more competing powers. But that doesn't mean that it is universally better if one side always controls everyone else.

Much like there were different opinions about the fate of lands from Stalin's and Hitler's, the current EU politians have no monopoly

  • I am half Bohemian. I wish I still lived in the Czech Republic. My father's family came here to the USA five generations ago. The architecture in the Czech Republic is beautiful and interesting. And the women... ohh wow!

Vaclav Klaus is a brilliant man. He is a gentleman and a real statesman. I especially respect his view on global warming; a wonderful angle that goes to the heart of the politics that created that monster.

  • a co kdyby ses radši doučil gramatiku a zacal komentovat takove veci az vyjdeš základní školu?

  • literal meaning is we'll make it sweet to europe. But true meaning of this phrase is we'll make you a trouble or "we'll be a badass", basically it means you wont get away easily. Its a joke of course.

  • well expressed.

I didn't like this spot in the beginning, but hey, it is creative and fun, just as we (czechs) are.

To nám zase Klaus udělá ostudu!

  • eu nebo schengen?

bez toho prvního bych se v klidu obešel..

  • good job! I hope for a great presidency: we need it!

  • Peťa chudák nemohl, měl nějakej zápas a Jarda další den letěl do Omsku:-)

  • ,,Evropě to osladíme'' a doufám, že řádně!! :-)

  • Foreign media translates the text as: "We will make it sweet for Europe".

  • A to jim ještě nedochází skutečný význam tohoto českého "idiomu":-D

  • and what about the other meanig?

    just say it

  • "We will sweeten it up to Europe?!?"

there must be a better English translation than that!

  • I gave you a better translation at the end of the clip, as an annotation (plus a few others in the accompanying article). On the other hand, "We will sweeten it up to Europe" is the most literal translation you can have. ;-)

  • You know, it's a sentence addressed to Czech audiences whose interest in the EU should be revived by this short film.

    The phrase is deliberately ambiguous.

It is a pun that cannot be translated without altering its simplicity or some of its implications and hidden meanings.

  • Yes, in fact this sentence means "We will make you a really hard times" but it is said ironically, with threatening humour

  • well it can also mean we will kick the in the ass sort of

  • "well it can also mean we will kick the in the ass sort of"

ahh no. It means we will make it sweet for Europe, in eng it includes both meanings.

  • Autor se dopustil poměrně vtipného překlepu v názvu - "sweat" znamená pot, zpotit se. Narozdíl od zamýšleného "sweeten" - osladit :) "My to Evropě zapotíme" :-D

  • Nakonec, třeba nebude daleko od pravdy :)A už pár let se to koneckonců děje :)

Musím přiznat, že bez těch vysvětlujících popisků (dík za ně!) mám i jako Čech problém vstřebat mediální poselství toho klipu, skoro půlku účinkujících si nedokážu s ničím spojit

a vynález kostkového cukru mi rozhodně nenaskočí jako poznávací znak ČR.

Jinak se mi moc líbí překlad "We will show Europe the sweet taste of its own medicine" :)

  • Ale ten klip... To je zase OSTUDA!

  • I can see the live commentary.. Jagr.. Jagr shoooots! And oooh, what a save by Petr Cech! It was a world-class shot by Jaromir Jagr, but Petr Cech was more than equal to deny it.. :)

  • Nj, holt ne vždy vše vyjde dle našich představ :) A s holkama to bude určitě taky dobrý, dík. ;)

  • Nice ;-)
