The only way this game was somewhat bearable was with a gazilion mods. I never fellt the need to add any mods but the restoration project to fallout 2. Granted I was biased about what I wanted for fallout 3, but this steaming pile of shit bethesda made is just rape of the franchise.

@RealPublic It is true, but it has passed many years after fallout 2, and someone had to continue the legacy, maybe in a bad way for the real fans, but its a good start. Look at fallout new vegas, the obsidian team is gonna work in it, presumibly because fallout3 called their attention, so, it may be a good Fallout with it's spirit instead a good "oblivion" thankfully by bethesda's work. I hope they won't dissapoint the fans with that new sequel.

Have you played fallout 3 because everyone I know that has played this game has liked it. It has very high rating on a lot if not all video game reviewers. I play fallout and think it's awesome. Besides, everybody reacts flaws and mistakes differently. Fallout had it's flaws, even big ones, and people stopped playing trough because of them but it was still a good game. Hell, I liked both of them, though Fallout 2 was better...but then again it's product of it's own time.

Story point also reminded me that Fallout 2 story maker, Chris Avellone was accused of making too much changes on the original setting, and that his knowledge of the universe is not what it should be. Avellone liked to throw FEV in every mutation, for example and Tim Cain wanted also keep radition mutations in count.
Too bad Interplay drove troika away, and that Troika went down. I'd would've liked to see what Black Isle/Obsidian would've been with troika to buff them up.

after watching this clip I fully agree. Fallout has become just another shooter. I went through the whole game, killing everyone i saw. and reached level 20 CAP (yes a fucking lvl20 cap. what BULLSHIT!!!) and have a virtually unstoppable charactoer. Now, I don't know. Sure, Fallout 3 is a whole different game than 2 or 1, but it's good in it's own way, and offers quite a lot of potential now with the GECK (= editor) out. I still prefer F2 though for most of it.
Guess you're right with that, but that's where marketing comes into play. Call it "Fallout 3", and it sells much better than a game named "Postapocalyptic Wasteland". Yeah, I think too that a sequel to the Fallout series should have been more true to the series, and that Fallout 3 has few in common with 1 and 2. But I also think that just because it's called "Fallout" but hasn't got too much in common with the series, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the game nonetheless.
People have been waiting (like myslef) 10 years for this game, and they've got a pure mediacore action game instead. Not many of fans can ignore such a failure, and like it the way it is.

Half-life 2 is a very well-made game. I also played Episodes 1 and 2 with developer commentaries. The commentaries are very detailed, they really put a lot of thought and care into making the game. My impression of the developers was that they really do have the interests of the gamers in mind. They left no area unattended, story, gameplay etc. Valve is one of those few game developers left that truly try to excel in game development and story-telling - making games for gamers and by gamers.
Fallout 2 started having some flaws, too many connections to the pop culture, starting to become cartoony and it started to have less "grey colours" in the main plot.
Like for example in the first game, the main boss was totally a "bad guy". The Master (that was his nickname) had plans to make good things for the future, but in a wrong way. That made Fallout a very "pure" RPG, where there's no bad and good sides, where You have to choose.

The graphics and action does look good - if it was it's own game having nothing to do with Fallout, but damn, I knew from when I first heard Bethesda announcing they were doing Fallout 3 I was skeptic as fuck. I'm gonna "download" this to see how it is... I don't consider myself a huge fan of Fallout but I thought Fallout 1 was an awesome immersion into another world with a great plot, time limit, themes, dark humor, everything. I am beginning to believe Bethesda is slipping on it's plot.....
Other companies were interested in buying the franchise, Bethesda (zenimax) bought it first, because they have more money and needed Beth to make money on something else than TEOS again. Ang buying the franchise is cheaper than making a new game (the half of the work is already done)

Despite the movement of the game industry, and after all the "this is how it is now" jargon, after playing FO3 for well over 100 hours now, it has left no lasting appeal in my heart the way the originals did, and from my understanding every single game that has come out recently from big gaming companies has gone the same route of frat boy mentality with some superficial movie rip offs in thee attempt to make their version of "art".
@OaverevaO I have to agree with you there. After playing through Fallout 3 and liking it, I went back and played Fallout 2. When I decided to go back and play 3 after a while, It just wasn't the same. The game struck me as a generic FPS with the ability to stop time to shoot your enemies. After seeing how great 2 was in all aspects, to me it beat out 3 by miles.

FO3 does not have a great humour, and the setting is not as great as the previous fallouts shown, and and over the top gore was never the major part of the game (but it is in Bethesda's FO3)
You might not think the humor is great, but plenty of people would beg to differ. And how is the setting worse? The first two games had no real landmarks. Sure it may have had more or more memorable town/cities, but there was nothing to show where it took place other then what the game told you. In FO3 you can easily see that it takes place in DC. My mistake, I forgot that Bloody Mess is only in FO3. Oh wait, it isn't. And doesn't it even affect the ending of FO1? Yeah, it does.
I understand that everyone has a different sense of humour, but humour in FO3 in sense of Fallout doesn't fit and it doesn't have the same style/quality.

I liked Fallout 3 for the 3D ruined DC that I could roam. I like to play the "pilgrim" in games, always just roaming around and seeing places.
As for humor and character interaction, FO3 is severely lacking (with the exception of the Vault Dweller's father). I would have rather had a full-blown RPG as well. VATS mode is kind of stupid in this game.
As for the gore bit, yes, FO 1 and 2 are pretty gory. The difference is that it's much more of a selling point in FO3.

Like it or not, this is the way the video game industry is going. The classic RPG-style games are being phased out. The Fallout world has strayed from its core long before FO3. Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel each took the Fallout universe in a different direction. Fallout3 is doing it too, but it is trying to reach a more general consumer base. And it's working. They won't make any money trying to make the type of game you hardcore tradionalists want. It just doesn't make any financial sense.
Yes, we all know that. If that's the case then the franchise should have been left alone, because you just said what we hate about Bethesda. They butchered Fallout 3 for profit. Also please take a look at Bioware. Yes, they too represent now a more commerce line, but there is a huge difference: they still produce rpgs. Bethesda's fuckup is not mainly about "isometric view" and "turned based combat" but the fact that it is not a roleplaying game.
To be quite honest, I felt the same way you did when the D&D line went from games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale to games like Neverwinter Nights. You lose the table-top feel of the game- It's not so much a game of strategy as it is action. I was ready to break down and cry when I heard Bethesda was going to take over Fallout, but I think they produced an excellent game in its own right. It may not be Fallout at its core, but compare it to contemprary games and it hold up quite well.

I completely agree with you. I would have loved to see Van Buren come to fruition, and have that as FO3. Hopefully in future Fallouts, Beth will put more emphasis on interaction and psychology rather than firepower, but this formula has worked for them, so they may continue it.
Right now I'm dreading the Fallout MMORPG, because watching thousands of people running around in power armour dueling each other with miniguns is going to be more blasphemic than anything Bethesda has done in FO3.

Which blizzard game are you referring to? Diablo III? If it is made in the same style as Diablo II, then it's a hack 'n slash dungeon crawl, not really a pure-bred RPG. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to get a copy myself, but can you really compare Diablo to Fallout? They are just about as far apart as possible in the RPG spectrum.

I am actually really happy with the gore content in 3, i just wished that the gore made more... sense. I mean, the whole thing with the raiders and the skeletons in cages, people pinned to tables... uh. Are they actually surviving by killing some wastelanders for supplies, or trying to out-do Vlad the Impaler?

While what you say is true for some members, it doesn't hold true for all. I myself think this is game of about 6-7/10. As a Fallout game, it is 3/10. It fails miserably as a Fallout game.
Overall, it's mediocre at best. And while it may win the GOTY award come this Sunday, you have to take into account that changes in times and attitudes among people, the change in demographics. For someone like me who has played video games since the 80's, there was a time when video games were made with quality and passion in mind by it's developers, especially during the 90's. Not so anymore. And the current gamer crowd isn't as sophisticated.

Look at fallout new vegas, the obsidian team is gonna work in it, presumibly because fallout3 called their attention, so, it may be a good Fallout with it's spirit instead a good "oblivion" thankfully by bethesda's work. I hope they won't dissapoint the fans with that new sequel.

It's a mediacore FP shooter with useless RPG elements. Clunky animations, annoying characters, childish ideas, quests with closely to none choices and consequences. The story is cliche-driven and mediacore.

Besides, everybody reacts flaws and mistakes differently. Fallout had it's flaws, even big ones, and people stopped playing trough because of them but it was still a good game. Hell, I liked both of them, though Fallout 2 was better...but then again it's product of it's own time.

Story point also reminded me that Fallout 2 story maker, Chris Avellone was accused of making too much changes on the original setting, and that his knowledge of the universe is not what it should be. Avellone liked to throw FEV in every mutation, for example and Tim Cain wanted also keep radition mutations in count.
Too bad Interplay drove troika away, and that Troika went down. I'd would've liked to see what Black Isle/Obsidian would've been with troika to buff them up.

after watching this clip I fully agree. Fallout has become just another shooter. I went through the whole game, killing everyone i saw. and reached level 20 CAP (yes a fucking lvl20 cap. what BULLSHIT!!!) and have a virtually unstoppable charactoer. Now, I don't know. Sure, Fallout 3 is a whole different game than 2 or 1, but it's good in it's own way, and offers quite a lot of potential now with the GECK (= editor) out. I still prefer F2 though for most of it.

Guess you're right with that, but that's where marketing comes into play. Call it "Fallout 3", and it sells much better than a game named "Postapocalyptic Wasteland". Yeah, I think too that a sequel to the Fallout series should have been more true to the series, and that Fallout 3 has few in common with 1 and 2. But I also think that just because it's called "Fallout" but hasn't got too much in common with the series, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the game nonetheless.

I long for some storyelling and soul in my video games. The last place that i encountered that was Half Life 2.....Bioshock was just too preachy and trying to be artsy to me.
Fallout 1 is the best. Started going downhill a little with Fallout 2. Kinda lost interest of it after that and i knew immediately that they were just in a hurry to sell. More underappreaciated games....

Half-life 2 is a very well-made game. I also played Episodes 1 and 2 with developer commentaries. The commentaries are very detailed, they really put a lot of thought and care into making the game. My impression of the developers was that they really do have the interests of the gamers in mind. They left no area unattended, story, gameplay etc. Valve is one of those few game developers left that truly try to excel in game development and story-telling - making games for gamers and by gamers.

Fallout 2 started having some flaws, too many connections to the pop culture, starting to become cartoony and it started to have less "grey colours" in the main plot.
Like for example in the first game, the main boss was totally a "bad guy". The Master (that was his nickname) had plans to make good things for the future, but in a wrong way. That made Fallout a very "pure" RPG, where there's no bad and good sides, where You have to choose.
FO2 missed that, and FO3 as well.

The graphics and action does look good - if it was it's own game having nothing to do with Fallout, but damn, I knew from when I first heard Bethesda announcing they were doing Fallout 3 I was skeptic as fuck. I'm gonna "download" this to see how it is... I don't consider myself a huge fan of Fallout but I thought Fallout 1 was an awesome immersion into another world with a great plot, time limit, themes, dark humor, everything. I am beginning to believe Bethesda is slipping on it's plot.....

Other companies were interested in buying the franchise, Bethesda (zenimax) bought it first, because they have more money and needed Beth to make money on something else than TEOS again. Ang buying the franchise is cheaper than making a new game (the half of the work is already done)

@OaverevaO I have to agree with you there. After playing through Fallout 3 and liking it, I went back and played Fallout 2. When I decided to go back and play 3 after a while, It just wasn't the same. The game struck me as a generic FPS with the ability to stop time to shoot your enemies. After seeing how great 2 was in all aspects, to me it beat out 3 by miles.
Putting aside the "consoltard" argument and all the other trolls, most of them don't like fallout 1 & 2 since its a pure RPG.

You might not think the humor is great, but plenty of people would beg to differ. And how is the setting worse? The first two games had no real landmarks. Sure it may have had more or more memorable town/cities, but there was nothing to show where it took place other then what the game told you. In FO3 you can easily see that it takes place in DC. My mistake, I forgot that Bloody Mess is only in FO3. Oh wait, it isn't. And doesn't it even affect the ending of FO1? Yeah, it does.

The gore is over used not because it's in 3D,or FPP,it's just simply over used which makes it a proper shooter (FPS) game.

I liked Fallout 3 for the 3D ruined DC that I could roam. I like to play the "pilgrim" in games, always just roaming around and seeing places.
As for humor and character interaction, FO3 is severely lacking (with the exception of the Vault Dweller's father). I would have rather had a full-blown RPG as well. VATS mode is kind of stupid in this game.
As for the gore bit, yes, FO 1 and 2 are pretty gory. The difference is that it's much more of a selling point in FO3.

Like it or not, this is the way the video game industry is going. The classic RPG-style games are being phased out. The Fallout world has strayed from its core long before FO3. Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel each took the Fallout universe in a different direction. Fallout3 is doing it too, but it is trying to reach a more general consumer base. And it's working. They won't make any money trying to make the type of game you hardcore tradionalists want. It just doesn't make any financial sense.

To be quite honest, I felt the same way you did when the D&D line went from games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale to games like Neverwinter Nights. You lose the table-top feel of the game- It's not so much a game of strategy as it is action. I was ready to break down and cry when I heard Bethesda was going to take over Fallout, but I think they produced an excellent game in its own right. It may not be Fallout at its core, but compare it to contemprary games and it hold up quite well.

I completely agree with you. I would have loved to see Van Buren come to fruition, and have that as FO3. Hopefully in future Fallouts, Beth will put more emphasis on interaction and psychology rather than firepower, but this formula has worked for them, so they may continue it.
Right now I'm dreading the Fallout MMORPG, because watching thousands of people running around in power armour dueling each other with miniguns is going to be more blasphemic than anything Bethesda has done in FO3.

Which blizzard game are you referring to? Diablo III? If it is made in the same style as Diablo II, then it's a hack 'n slash dungeon crawl, not really a pure-bred RPG. I remember this place, might've been the cathedral in Fo1? First place I saw with guts smeared all over the metal countertops. Made a good impact.
I am actually really happy with the gore content in 3, i just wished that the gore made more... sense. I mean, the whole thing with the raiders and the skeletons in cages, people pinned to tables... uh. Are they actually surviving by killing some wastelanders for supplies, or trying to out-do Vlad the Impaler?

Dude, the point ain't all the gore and pretty blood in the game... previous games had that too. I remembered when I released the prisoners and they exploded after they ran into a laser beam that suddenly appeared! Can't remember whether it was in Fo2 or 1 for the heck of it... the point is... violence is good, violence is awesome, but what else would you, RealPublic, like to see? :)
If you say a deeper story and way more endings, I'm with you 100%.

Violence and blood were not the main core in Fallout 1&2. They just juiced the taste of the game, like a pepper in a tasty and healthy salad.
Fallout 3 is like an unhealthy hamburger with too much pepper spread all over it. It's tasty for a while, but you'll get sick of it sooner or later.

Also, Fallout is one of my interests right now, because I'm doing an alternative soundtracks for FO3, and I'm having a break from a "social life" at the moment ;) Just to focus on the music to make my life worth livin in the future.

This video, it's saying the game looks awesome, but as a sequel to Fallout it sucks.
I've been telling some to look at is a completely different game, i know it's hard to do but some people tired it and said that it was a good game, but not a good FALLOUT game.

Yeah you got it somewhat. Keep in mind that like every social group, there are differences and diversity of opinion within it's members. While what you say is true for some members, it doesn't hold true for all. I myself think this is game of about 6-7/10. As a Fallout game, it is 3/10. It fails miserably as a Fallout game.

Overall, it's mediocre at best. And while it may win the GOTY award come this Sunday, you have to take into account that changes in times and attitudes among people, the change in demographics. For someone like me who has played video games since the 80's, there was a time when video games were made with quality and passion in mind by it's developers, especially during the 90's. Not so anymore. And the current gamer crowd isn't as sophisticated.

I really love the environment, how immersive it is. The mood is beautiful- I really enjoy exploring and going on little one-off quests.
I feel like the game is only a macho FPS if you approach it that way. I certainly don't.

That I agree with. It is a different non-Fallout game, Fallout only in setting and name, but in other respects it is simply Oblivion with guns. And Oblivion itself is dumbed down sequel of the Elder Scrolls series, graphically superior to it's predecessors but in all other respects inferior.

Might as well have the customers make the games. If game developers are so incompetent into making full complete satisfying games themselves that they would rely on modding tools and modmakers to provide that much needed missing content as a saving grace for the game's lack thereof, then they shouldn't make games.

Listen, I bought bigbox versions of FO1 and 2 when they orignally came out and FO3, while certainly different, was very entertaining. I'm sick of isometric games, I'm sick of having more pop-culture references than quests, and I'm sick of people crying about how much a game sucks when they planned on hating it the day it was announced. Is the game perfect? No. Is it Fallout? Definitely.
