Fact number 1: being that close the fire would have engulfed him and he would be dead.

Fact number 2: It would have been on the news and you could have probly felt it almost 200 miles away

any explosion big enough will produce a mushroom cloud as long as it has something to lift in to the air, a nuke detonated miles above the ground does not produce a mushroom cloud.
