You are of course correct, the USA didn't ship them all out, although they did pay for some of the ships ie cargo ships. The British government paid the £650,000 to the Mauritian government, who kept it and did not pass it on to the people.I don't have a problem about the USA having a base there, its the way the people from ALL the out lying islands were removed. They could have been used as civilian labour on the base instead of bringing guys from Philipines etc.
Its just a matter of convenient forgetfulness, the islands in the caribean had their native people wiped out then repopulated with cheap labour (ie slaves) May be the people of Jamaica or Virgin islands should be shipped off and a Navy base set up. may be we should do it to the Americans, after all the Native Americans would surely love THEIR country back
@laguna3fase4 yeah but... us american's didn't ship them off, the British did. They paid 650,000 to relocate them. And these were plantations if I'm not mistaken. Just cash crops, not exactly a rich cultured people. They came from surrounding islands.
STOP THE FILTHY LYING!! FACT: NO "INDIGENOUS PEOPLE" EXISTED WHEN DIEGO GARCIA DISCOVERED THE ISLAND (16TH CENTURY) & UNTIL SETTLED BY THE FRENCH (1793). D.G. WAS CEDED TO THE U.K. (TREATY OF PARIS 1814) AND RUN BY THE COLONIAL GOVT ON MAURITIUS UNTIL 1965 WHEN THE U.K. BOUGHT THE ISLANDS & DECLARED THEM A SEPARATE B.I.O.T. THE ILLOIS ("Chagossians") IS A CREOLE CULTURE THAT FORMED AMONG MADAGASCARAN & MALAYAN PLANTATION WORKER SLAVES BROUGHT TO THE ISLAND BY THE FRENCH BETWEEN 1793 & 1810.
What a load of BS. This video is completely misleading. There was never an indiginous people of Diego Garcia, transient workers were taken to DG from other islands by the British to work on the coconut plantation. When the plantation closed the workers were forced to return to their native islands. DG always belonged to the Brits and no one else. The plantation workers claimed DG as their home but this is a lie. Know the facts.
At its most charitable, you're misinformed. At worst, you're seeking to misinform. If you have facts that back you up, put 'em up. As the legal records stand now, it's a LEGALLY accepted fact that in fact the Chagos peoples **did* own Diego Garcia, and it was taken from them in contravention and circumspection of International treaties.
Don't be put off by these big words though: just reference your facts externally and we'll be all good.
@mbaye501 Wow! I never knew about this either. However, it does not surprise me what the government has done to the people of this island. I learned this from Blacklistednews . com
