  • Even TRAHVOLTAH! (you obviously know what I'm talking about) faces his worst years. Staying Alive was pretty crappy, it changed the subject from Disco to Dance (WTF?). Saturday Night Fever >>>>>>>>>>>> Staying Alive. LOL! 0*.

Wherein "The Amityville Horror" was good, "Amityville 3D" was bad. That would be like putting Smell-O-Vision on the Jaws films. *1/2

  • 80s people sure loved latex.

  • Burt Reynolds wouldn't do Smokey 3 but he did Stroker Ace wth

  • Wow. Gleason had a bad year. BTW, in 'Bandit 3,' what would those two guys want with Justice's badge anyway?

  • KRULL WAS KOOL!!

  • Stinker 1983, its ebert

  • @TheDeeFormed That really did make me laugh out loud Xd thank you sir

  • "No Sequels, no 3D." That statement still holds true, 28 years later.

  • Gene Siskel not only loved Saturday Night Fever, but ended up buying John Travolta's famous white three piece suit and owning it until his death, so when he says he felt betrayed by Stayin' Alive, he MEANS it to a T!!!!!!

  • as a kid, Krull was one of my favorite movies.

  • Was surprised they didn't mention Friday the 13th part 3

  • @Melvinwacko that came out in 1982

  • Wow,1983 had some lame movies!!!

  • EVERYTHING they have commented on reguarding the film industry just blew my mind because this was nearly thirty years ago and NOTHINGS CHANGED...Scream 4 fast and furious 5?

  • @YnotBUildUrBOdY I agree---the amount of remakes and sequels Hollywood is doing just shows how bereft of ideas the industry is.

  • Siskel thought Rocky 2 was as good as Godfather 2??

  • @lucky44124 I think he was just saying they were examples of good sequels, not that they were on a par with each other.

  • Like two old ladies who find everything offensive.

  • Good stuff. Man I miss Siskel, and I hope Ebert gets some quality reconstructive surgery and a much deserved respite.

  • What Gene says about theater owners booking junk is true to this day. I had a talk with the ONE fucking guy that chooses the films shown in all the Malco's in Memphis TN (the only theaters in the city) and I was curious if he actually screened different types of films or did he just get send a load of the latest big budget releases. these guys see lots of new cinema from all over the world and every single bit of it gets rejected, his idea of a good movie was "one that makes a lot of money"

  • Communication Theory?! Fuck yeh, Siskel

  • The weirdest thing that can be said about "Staying Alive" was co-written and directed by Sylvester Stallone himself!

  • some scenes filmed at Santa cruz beach boardwalk

  • "No sequels, no 3-D"

If only they could use the "no 3-D" rule this year.

  • a trailer for smokey 3 showing buford talking about being the bandit in the infamous rumor of "smokey is the bandit" has recently surfaced on youtube. he talks about putting on the bandits shirt and boots and hat and mustache and becomnig the bandit to trap him.

  • I remember seeing Burt Reynolds on Donahue one time and a guy stood up and asked him why he made such garbage movies when he could have done better. That took guts! I guess the answer is most Hollywood movies are garbage....he was just cashing in on the stupidity of the American public.

  • @bulafritz KRULL A DESSERT WHAT A GREAT NAME FOR AN ICE CREAM

  • Jwaz 3D i agree sucked.Amityville 3D sucked.Porkyz 2 i liked. The Sting 2 i saw az a kid n thought it sucked.Smokey and the Bandit 3 WORST OF THE TRILOGY!Staying Alive really sucked. So out of all 6 Smokey and the Bandit 3 waz the worst of 83 in my opinion.

  • These guys can't make their minds up if it's called "At The Movies" or "And the Movies"

  • 00:52 Cockblocker!!

  • It's pretty amazing to me watching this (and Part 1) that none of the movies that Siskel & Ebert panned ever even came close to standing the test of time. I never even knew they made "The Sting II".

I also find it interesting that 1983 was the year they made "Return of the Jedi", which is considered to be one of the best sequels in movie history. "Superman III" was also made that year, and I was actually surprised not to see it on this show. Some people hate that movie.

  • I wonder what Siskel and Ebert would have thought if they knew that--27 years after this show was made---Hollywood would still be afflicted with "sequelitis", and still with the same dismal results.

  • but it's not all bad. some great 80's sequels include the road warrior, star trek 2, star trek 4, evil dead 2, indiana jones and temple of doom/last crusade, empire strikes back, return of the jedi, superman 2 (although the donner cut released recently on dvd is better), among others.

  • what siskel?the blonde is a man as well?I could have swore it was 2 actors and a actress

  • I hate all the movies on the show but I did like Staying Alive, perhaps because a me and a girl I was in love with went to the theater to see it and we enjoyed it! I always like Travolta!

  • Well, at least they made up for it with Purple Rain next year.

  • Stroker Ace could have been included, in an indirect way, in the sequel category. All those terrible Burt R. car movies - Smokey/Bandit II and III, Stroker Ace, Cannonball Run I and II - are, for all intents and purposes, sequels to the original Smokey and the Bandit.

  • There was one good sequel from 1983, Return of the Jedi.

  • I really love seeing Siskel & Ebert on YouTube and I'd really love to see more of their film reviews from the 1990's, particularly the review they did for the film The Bodyguard (Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston), I know they gave the film "Two Thumbs Up" but I want to see what they had to say about it.

  • no remakes either

  • I agree with Skulldini. Their cheapshot at Paul Williams (4:46-4:55) is really unfair. If you Google Paul Williams and look at his movie credits you will see a few good movies listed there, such as "Phantom of the Paradise," "The Cheap Detective," "The Muppet Movie," and "The Doors."

*P.S.: Had this episode of At the Movies came out today, I would have agreed if he had inserted the names Shaq, Paris Hitlon, Tom Green, Steven Seagal, or Carmen Electra.

  • Sting II seems pathetic.

  • Paul Williams ? .. Well, I like Phantom Of The Paradise and Battle For The Planet Of The Apes.

  • So this film has nothing going for it - LOL

  • JAWS III isnt that bad, its just doesnt have the eerieness of the original and the terror

  • Paul Williams was in SatB 3? Whoa!

  • Man,1983 has to be the single worst year for sequels.

  • @sugreev2001 Psycho II was also crap. Same year. Surprised it didn't make their list.

  • wow, "The Buddy System". Now there's a movie I forgot existed at all...much like Ebert's lack of recollection on "The Sting II".

  • I actually do remember that film and I liked it :)

  • So sad to see great actors like Malden and Gleason doing this crap at the end of their careers.

  • Isn't it? Makes me think of Peter Sellers--one of the most talented people in the movie business--both the living and the dead--spent the last decade of his life making trash to get money. Unbelievable.

  • @frantic1971 At least in Gleason's case, he pulled one last great performance (to me at least) with Nothing in Common with Tom Hanks (I also like his reunion with Art Carney, Izzy and Moe)

  • staying a lame LOL

  • 3:53 : Republicans!

  • ???

  • What a bunch of horrible movies.

  • sylvester stallone wrote and directed staying alive. that probably explains it.

  • To his shame

  • he also made his brother write 9 songs for the 'dance numbers'.

  • LOL

  • That scene fom Smokey 3 was horrendous. Painful to watch

  • Krull was not that bad. It is watchable.

  • Never saw it but remember playing the Krull video game on Atari 2600, lol.

  • @kmalloy11 Krull was a fantasy film. Sort of a cross between Star Wars and Excalibure.

  • "I can't even remember what Krull was! Sounded like a dessert!"

  • Sounds like a piece of furniture at IKEA.

  • Well, if it is a dessert, I hope it tastes better than the movie itself!

  • I still want to see the first cut of S&B 3 where gleason plays both roles.

  • Ah yes, the infamous "Smokey IS the Bandit" edit ... Id love to see that one too.

  • Didn't Siskel own the white suite Travolta wore in Saturday Night Fever?

  • He actually did.

  • How did The Sting II ever get made?

  • Amazing right? Talk about Burt Renyolds man did Jackie Gleason ever sell out big time as well. from The Hustler to The Sting 2? Huh? He was also in the smokey and the bandit movies.

  • I believe one time they named a movie one of the worst and later changed it. I think is was SLAPSHOT

  • Gene's tongue got twisted often, but I wonder if his line, "Staying a Lame...uh...Staying Alive..." wasn't intentional.

  • doubt it

    =(

  • It sounded like Staying Awake.
