I had a 74 wagon, I bought it without great expectations and drove it as a second beater car. It was underpowered, sure, but overall it was reliable and served me well for quite a few years. It was simple to fix as well. No complaints!
I had a "72" pinto which I bought used in "76" with 29,000 miles.....Other then brakes and oil changes I never put any money in it. The only reason I got rid of it was because I got drunk and hit a pole in 1980 with it....
@marcsdriver my dad had a 72 model. he drove it over 250k miles before he hydroplaned in a storm and wrecked it. never did anything but a timing belt. then he got a new 77. canary yellow. i was 16 and soon took it over from him. 2.3 4 speed. that little car would go from daylight to dark in an hour and a half. won a lot of money drag racing with that little car.it would beat my 72 roadrunner with a 440.
@screenjims2006 according to Ford, the problem was corrected starting with the 1977 Pintos, There was no exploding dangers with them. The '70 to '76 models had the problem but they were recalled & the problem was fixed. I know this, because my older sister had a '76 Pinto, and the recall fixed the problem on hers. In 1981 was turning 17 when I was going to buy it from her, but instead, she traded it in for a Subaru & I was so pissed.
RUST was it's MIDDLE NAME!!! WTF!!!! NO WAXING?!!!! HA!!! HA!!!! MORE B.S.!!!! The VEGA (and it's sister car the Pontiac ASTRE) was a WORSE CAR though!!!! They would RUST in the SHOW ROOM!!!! Not to mention HEAD GASKET PROBLEMS!!!!
It was a BIG problem with the Pinto. That's what the Pinto is known for...exploding! There was a famous case involving a mother driver her Pinto with her young son. They were rear ended, the Pinto exploded in flames and the boy was severely burned. Can you say "Lawsuit"?
Got 180k out of mine before totaling it. 2.3 overhead cam engine was the best of it's time. The problem is too many people got them for their kids who never change oil.
i'd die before i'd be seen in one of them.

I had one...but my insurance company totaled it because I had less than half a tank of gas
homemoviescolorado 2 years ago
that sounds weird, I'm not gonna lie
the06bug 2 years ago
They said it wasn't worth the cost to refill the tank..and that's when gas was .40 a gallon
homemoviescolorado 2 years ago
@homemoviescolorado I'd be wary of putting anything in that tank

The reason they blew up was because the fuel tank was behind the rear axle. Later models had the tank moved forward.

The Pinto DID have oil-change-indicator lights on its dash, did it?
.
And how did you manage to total it and survive? What a miracle that was!
ChomuSclavus 3 years ago
It did not have a change oil light. It had a low oil light.

love the pinto commercials... but I can't remember what the big issue was with them/why they were lemons... *going to consult wiki*
snarkdetriomphe 4 years ago
They'd blow up when they'd get rear-ended. That's what made them so unsafe.
