@SlovenskyRaj@JinnyMic There are 2 basic constructs of Brass Instruments, Conical and Tubular. Trumpets, Trombones and French Horns are Tubular. Flugelhorns, Tubas, Euphoniums, Mellophones, Tenor Horns etc... are Conical. If Leonhard's horn were a flugelhorn of some form, it would have a MUCH less pronounced flare towards the end. It is in essence a Valve Trombone. And for the record, there is an instrument known as a "Flugabone" (a trombone range flugelhorn), but this isn't one.
The instrument he plays in one of their performances of Bohemian Rhapsody is clearly a rotary valve, but is it a Flügelhorn? I think it's range is too low for that. View Mnozil's Bohemian Rhapsody Uploaded by stahlmannen on Jan 3, 2007
@SlovenskyRaj and @TonyBtones, its Leonhard Paul's custom Bass Trumpet. It sits somewhere between a Trumpet and a Trombone (more similar to a Tenor Horn).
@Aeromedic: Aeromedic may be correct on the technicality that Flügelhorns by definition are in the soprano range and this instrument clearly and easily plays within the tenor and even baritone range (view Mnozil Bohemian Rhapsody video).
@SlovenskyRaj Assuming you mean the tall guys instrument, it might be a baritone solo horn (bell front marching style baritone). Mouthpiece looks like it's the right size, though the bore seems small...
@JinnyMic The particular instrument he chose to use for this performance is a piston vavle. Rotary valves are played horizontally, and rotary valves do not stand higher than the leadpipe. After performing several searches on Fluegelhorns, and enlarging stills of the instrument he uses in THIS performance (he uses rotaries in some other recordings), it seems clear that he may be using an oddly wide-bore/wide bell Fluegelhorn.

the old look of the instruments is because they never got their final layer of varnish.
@havepie Which one do you think is a mello? The only one that even resembles a mello is the instrument held by the one in pink/red and that is not a mello. It is some sort of low brass instrument probably a bass trumpet(which you also have listed). I'm aware that there are many types of mellophones(I'm a mello player myself) but nobody on that stage is holding one. I would say it's 1 trumpet, 1 rotary trumpet, 1 trumpet like instrument(not sure what it is) 2 trombones, 1 tuba, and a bass trumpet
@Deathwish42 Oh yes, definitely a mellophone, the older models had that type of design, the older kind ones had that similar to a concert french horn, its taken awhile for it to become what it is now, but yes, the rotary trumpet I do believe is a bass trumpet, and the trumpet like instrument you mention, which is what the main guy plays too, is a flumpet, a mix between a trumpet and a flugelhorn.
@havepie I know exactly what type of mello you are referring to and that is not one. It is shaped wrong(one can be seen here /watch?v=6vavr_QNFiE) and the mouthpiece is the size of a trombone mouthpiece which is much too large for any type of mellophone(can be seen at 2:09). The rotary trumpet is not a bass trumpet. For that to be true that means it is pitched an octave lower than standard trumpet and that is certainly not the case as it is much too small.
@havepie Previous post was too long. (bass trumpet can be seen here /watch?v=2jGoP1NLqOg&feature=channel). On top of the size being wrong the mouthpiece is most certainly a high brass mouthpiece.(can be seen at 17 seconds.)
I loved the tempo and loudness. The flight of the bumblebee can be heard but I think it's part of some jazzy arrangement made about 30 years ago (just as good, IMO) called something "boogie". Would anyone here know what I'm talkjng about??
