@manlioman Is anything original? This is a dubious claim, but What matters most is that Jesus demonstrates the love of God, undermines all sacrificial behavior by making a sacrificial rite into a friendly meal, and allows us to demonstrate that we are fed by God and by the events of Jesus' life.
@FatherMatthew -Is anything original??! The biblical Jesus, Mary, God, holy spirit & christian dogmas were all created using the charactoristics of ancient PAGAN divinities &myths. Nothing in christianity is original. Sacrificial rite as a friendly meal, & allowed ancient pagans to demonstrate that they were fed by God predates christian eucharist by centuries. Making believe that you transform Jesus into cookies is no different than what the babylonians and greeks used to do.
@manlioman I would say it is different because the Greeks had the "pharmakon's" or scapegoats. The Babylonians sacrificed humans. Christians find life on the other side of culture that is animated by sacrifice. This is the Original thing about Christianity. Christ saves us from the madness of sacrificial behavior (by the state, the crowd, and the religious) through the example of the Passion and then being vindicated by God in the Resurrection. God said "No" to the Passion.
@manlioman Continuing from last post: usually cultures love their scapegoats (even atheists) but Christianity is a kind of anti-culture or anti-religion that undermines all sacrificial and scapegoating behavior through the ministry, death, and raising of Christ. This is the difference between most Pagans and Christianity. In Paganism and Atheism sacrifice and scapegoating works and is encouraged. In Christianity, it is revealed as a lie and a falsehood. In Christ we find wisdom.
@FatherMatthew We like to talk about Christian teaching as "revelations" or "discoveries" or "epiphanies" not that it was "created" or "made up." Christian truth is part of a historical institutional process that seeks to perceive what God is up to in the world. At its best, like science, it discovers wisdom, it doesn't make it up.
@FatherMatthew Christian theophagy is exactly as that of the Eleusi mystics and their sacred Kykeon, Dionisis' Holy Grail of wine, Cybele's eating and drinking from the kymbalan and tympanon, and that of Mitra and the consumption of BREAD & WINE. All peaceful comunion meals of thanks, much like the Essenes rite later on. Christain theophagy is also very similar to Indian cult of Agni's (sun divinity, and son of the virgin) eucharist. Bread & wine were used also for Attis theophagy
@manlioman Even the utensils (like the paten and chalice) and mixing water and wine came from the Mitrian cult. You, preforming magic tricks and turning Jesus particles into cookies is identical to what the Pagans used to do. It is typical and historical that christians claim falsehood to anything the pagans did, only to substitute thos same rituals and belief with the christian God. Hence, as you know, the same thing applies to Baptism and many others.
@manlioman PLEASE read Rene Girard's "The Scapegoat." I'm serious. The point is not the bread and the wine drinking. The point is the bread and the wine drinking in light of the death and resurrection of Christ which calls out all sacrificial behavior. Peace isn't even the issue. Anyone can get peace after a stoning or sacrifice. This is its power. But the Christian Eucharist calls us back to the historical Christ event which is different.
@FatherMatthew The biblical Jesus, Mary, God, holy spirit & christian dogmas were all created using the charactoristics of ancient PAGAN divinities. Nothing in christianity is original. That's why there is no contemporary historicity of Christ. Christ's birth, death &resurrection is the pagan's solstices and equinoxes, which they rejoiced and celibrated on the same dates which the christians replaced with their festive dates (such as dec. 25th).
@manlioman Nietzsche noted the potent difference between Christ and Dionysus. He chose Dionysus, unfortunately. They are not the same or equivalent. Although they traffic in similar symbols, their configuration is cataclysmically different.
@FatherMatthew (by the way, atheists do not use sacrifice nor scapegoating, that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard). Scapegoating was mainly a hebrew superstition. The hebrew God and christians seem to favor scapegoats, enough to invent Jesus as a scapegoat in order to redeem humanity's sin (another great christian mechanism usful for instrumentalizing your flock).
@manlioman Any time a person demonizes someone or excludes them and then gets a unifying force from that expulsion (whether you are demonizing pagans, Christians, scientists, or fundamentalists) this is scapegoating-like behavior. And it is not superstitious because it works to enculturate all sorts. All against one works. Yet there is another way. Jesus exposes the scapegoating process, and offers new life without killing and sacrifice by showing that God is in our victims.
@FatherMatthew The persecution and extermination of the pagans and hebrews, the destruction of their temples and statues of deities, was all performed by the Fathers of the Christian Church and the use of the Bible teachings. The punishments were all done for the love of Jesus.... that's christian love as historically demonstrated.
@manlioman So, some atheists are sacrificially minded, and some aren't. Same with Christians. But the pivot point is the Way of Christ which renounces the evil of thinking that you can cast out evil and not become evil yourself. And Jesus was a historical person. We should talk after you read some Girard, if you are truly interested in inter-faith comparisons. I'd be interested to see what you'd make of him!
God is offended by receiving Him on "dirty" hands(ONLY priest-MALE can touch Him) in the Holy Eucharist!
Only accepted by Heaven form of receiving living Heart of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist of the Catholic Church is into our mouth and on our both knees!
If the wheat waffer is the Body of Christ broken by our sins, then is the french toast with whipped cream and strawberries His resurected body? ;p (Also, I mean no disrespect to the Lord or to you; recieving communion is my favorite part of the Mass. It is a very unique and personal way to have fellowship with God.)
You know.. this looks like just how the new mass in the catholic church regards the "Eucharist". I quote from @130Allegro: "There is a spectrum of belief when it comes to the Lord's Presence in the Holy Eucharist in the Episcopal Church. The liturgy's language actually allows for that spectrum, making room for someone to value the Bread and Wine as a Symbol, or making room for someone to value the Real Presence of Jesus in the elements, and anywhere in between."
Catholicism is the Mass and the Sacraments. The Mass was destroyed in 1962 and the required Sacramental Form was destroyed in 1944. Sorry, it's over. The Church is in a state of auto-demolition as Paul VI stated in 1968. Of course it looks legitimate, but that's how Lucifer wants it. If you want the ability to stand when the punishment comes, know enough about your religion to know the names of the Trinity.
The stunning evidence is on FATIMAMOVEMENT d o t c o m
God is offended by receiving Him on "dirty" hands(ONLY priest can touch Him) in the Holy Eucharist!
Only accepted by Heaven form of receiving living Heart of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist of the Catholic Church is into our mouth and on our both knees!
(cont).. So when I ask if the elements of the bread and wine never change, I am am asking and appealing to you theologically. Are both species present afyer I partake of the cup of The Lord or not? Or are the co existing still after the consecration with the bread and wine AND the presence of Our Lord? I will await your Episcopal Theological reply. Thank you! Rob..
Fr. Matthew, you wrote me that Christ is present "in the bread and wine". Does that mean that when I consume this Eucharist, I am consuming the elements With the Body and Blood of Christ or has their been a total supernatural change? Is Christ going to come inside me "spiritually" or "substantially" leaving the elements transformed "totally", "partially" or like Lutherans believe basically without admitting today, "con-substantially" meaning simply, the elements never change into Christ?
It is my hope that one day all Christians will be able to share table fellowship in any church. It saddens me that as an Anglican I am not allowed to take communion in a Catholic church even though our traditions are very close. I value our spectrum of belief that allows the eucharist to be individual to each on a personal basis. This is one of the riches of Anglicanism. But it is also the thing that Rome objects to and as a result if I go to a catholic mass abroad I keep my angliacanism quiet
@x8lover it's good to know that I'm not the only one praying that prayer. =) As a Protestant (Anglican by desire; Lutheran by association), I too wish that I could share at the table with my Roman brothers. Maybe one day. =)
I don't like the way the hip contemporary and jazz music is playing for something sacred, the comedy bits act is also out of touch with the subject matter. It seems offensive, like you are mocking the subject.
Hebrews 10....."And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, WHICH CAN NEVER TAKE AWAY SINS: But this man, after He had offered ONE SACRIFICE for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till His enemies be made His footstool. For by ONE OFFERING He hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Now where remission of these is, THERE IS NO MORE OFFERING FOR SIN."
The eucharist is nothing more than a graven image of Christ.....Leviticus 26:1 “Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.”
pt 2) Could you outline how one should actually approach accepting Communion? What to say, how to hold it, should I bow? Just the actual ritual outlined... I looked to see if I could see anything about it in the BCP, but there's no outline. Thank you!
pt 1) I'm rather new to "organized religion" if you will and I went to an Episcopal service last Sunday. It came to the Eucharist and, having been baptized as an infant, I felt confident that I could partake in the sacrament; however, I was not as confident when it came to me actually doing it. The priest locked eyes with me and said "The Body of Christ," then placed it into my open palms. I had tried to hear what people before me had responded with, but I couldn't. Is there a common response?
@relussier The practice of receiving the bread involves cupping one's right hand over the left to have it placed in your hand. The common response after eating is "Amen." Thanks for asking!
@relussier Hello friend. Don't be fooled by organized religion. Instead, accept Christ as your saviour. He died on the cross for all of our sins 2000 years ago. Religion is nothing more than man's ways and man's efforts (plural). Christianity is God's way and God's effort (singular).
@johnthreesixteen316 I accepted Christ as my saviour a long time ago. Religion is a combination of faith and worship. Christianity is a religion, it combines faith in God and His Christ and the worship of God. The practices involved in any service were the same initiated in the bible. I don't know by what you expect me to be fooled.
funny that what you guys think is the body and blood of christ is just simple bread and wine haha fuuny sorry to tell you this the the one holy roman catholic and apostolic church is the only one with true apostolic succesion
As a Catholic, this video taught me something about the Episcopal Church's understanding of the Eucharist. The idea that the Eucharist is really a symbol, or at least more of a symbol than an actuality, seemed to be pretty central here. Am I misinterpreting it?
I wonder if there's any difference of theology among your colleagues and if some take a more Catholic point of view or if this is representative.
@130Allegro There is a spectrum of belief when it comes to the Lord's Presence in the Holy Eucharist in the Episcopal Church. The liturgy's language actually allows for that spectrum, making room for someone to value the Bread and Wine as a Symbol, or making room for someone to value the Real Presence of Jesus in the elements, and anywhere in between. This is part of the fruit of the specifically Anglican: Elizabethan Compromise.
@FatherMatthew Thank you for your informative reply. Researching the Elizabethan Compromise leads to the key historical details and some theology. So one remaining question I have is if some Episcopalians/Anglicans not only believe in transubstantiation but believe that the belief is essential. This question is important to ecumenism because the Catholic theology of ordination and apostolic succession focuses on transubstantiation in determining the validity of Episcopalian sacraments.
Nice try Mr mathew .. but You cannot EAT God .. The Communion was always meant as a representation/ memorial to God and Man's covenant and fellowship with God ...And as christians, we are already part of christs body ...which is all believing and following persons of faith ...
UNLEAVEND BREAD not a round wafer and NON ALCHOHOLIC WINE ...

Father, you present these videos in an innovative way which helps explain the Epsicopal view of Holy Communion in an easily understood way. it's amazing how close to Catholicism you can be without actually being Catholic.
I like your videos. What I get out the communion is I am actually there the night Christ was given over for suffering and death, with the Roman soldiers clsing in.
The wafer used in the mass. Catholics believe that the wafer turns into the actual body of Jesus Christ. This teaching, called transubstantiation, is one of their fundamentally most critical beliefs—one they believe is crucial to salvation. In reality, the wafer is nothing more than a sun symbol common in pagan religions.
In John 6:23-53 It was not symbolic in any way. Throughout these verses, the Greek text uses the word "phago". This word "Phago" means "to eat" or "physically consume." Jesus does not correct himself about this when the disciples leave him, he truly means that he is within the bread and within the wine.
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.' And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins
Christ was speaking figuratively when He mentions His body and blood.....John 16(King James Version) 25 "These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father."
Love this video. His lighthearted approach is refreshing. God's presence exists amid laughter and joy as well as serious moments and in our sorrows and struggles.
God teaches us through His word that these sacraments are NOT biblical and are NOT needed and are in fact BLASPHEMOUS. Open your bibles and learn the truth.
One of the things I love about being Episocpalian is that we can see the joy in all things, even sharing the Eucharist. I cannot think of a moment in my life that encompasses all the emotions - joy, love, sorrow, hope, etc - more than when I take Eucharist. And using humor does not contradict the reverence of the sacrament. In fact, in my mind, it reinforces the joy I feel knowing that I have once again affirmed my membership in the body of Christ.
Beware of this counterfeit that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught the Christians to commit adultery and fornicate with idols. BEWARE OF THIS MOTHER OF ALL HARLOTS. This will suffer heavy losses.
i don't understand why he's trying to be funny, God is a very serious subject to me. i couldn't pay attention to what he said for being distracted from wondering when those hands would get the right bread........ this was silly. did moses have sacrements, and breads, and robes, and statues? what about Enoch? David? sampson? men are brought to God for whats in their heart, and what they mean to do. jesus said to sell all you have to be perfect, so a person without is blessed. those with no bread.
- Through reading with understanding and believing the Word of God that's how we shall attain the Holy Spirit. A round "cookie" or a piece of any bread will not bring us perfection of love. It is God working inside us through His Spirit.
We receive God's Spirit for eternity(we are the Temple of God) and through the Spirit of God our love is made perfect and without fear.
Christ during the Last super took up a loaf and said, "take eat this is my body".... and then took the cup with wine and said " take drink this is my blood"....
through the blessing of our fathers does the Holy Spirit come down and transforms the bread and wine to the body and blood of Jesus Christ. no one knows exactly how it is transformed but thats why it is a sacriment.
The Eucharist is symbolic cannibalism. It should be revolting to any decent thinking person. The ritualistic consumption of the once living Jesus is a hellenistic addition to 1st century Pauline teachings. Disgusting rituals such as this one should be rejected as nothing more than an affront to reason, and an insult to the living god. I can't imagine how god could find such nonsense anything but a misguided search for truth.
The "new mass" in the Catholic Church today is nothing but the Episcopal Eucharist. Quite watered-down (like EVERYTHING else) about the Episcopal Church and the Vatican II P.O.G. Church!
The "new Mass" is different from the traditional Mass but the same sacrifice occurs. That has not changed, however I agree that some homilies and stuff has been watered down. But still this is not even close to what the Episcopal Church believes. Episcopalian priests cannot consecrate the bread and wine into the Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.
That cannot roman catholic priests either, the priest is representing Jesus Christ and the apostolic succession is necessary you are right about that. This church has the holy orders, but it is not recognised by the catholic church, therefore you may say there can be no consecration.
either way every religion has its own wrongdoings, our church has been full of it but hey I still believe in it. let me just say that I love the episcopals as much as I love Catholics. May Our Lord descend upon both our churches and keep us going to the truth that is his infinite glory, that has been shown upon all the saints and people of good doings from every race and religion. Amen
Im very Serious. and ill tell everybody this because it relly seemed like the techings of the Catholic Church. I now understand that both our churches are very well related and this is very great in the uniting of both churches. Thank you for making me believe that we catholics are not the only ones with these beliefs. To me our differences are really pointless. for example the priestesses and even though i totally disagree with it to me the difference is hardly any.
Im a Strong and Faithful Catholic who understands very well what my faith is based upon. I was searching for videos on the 7 sacraments to teach my students at the Sunday Schools of my parish. I did not know this video was a video from the episcopal church until in the video you passed by the episcopal flag.
All other non Catholics Christians have a pope whether an organization like the WT or a paster of a nondenominational church. It's sad that they don't have a true spiritual direction. They claim sola-scriptura but thats not biblical.
1 Cor 1:10 I urge you that there be no division among you. Mt 18:18 If he refuses to listen even to the church...
It doesn't say if he doesn't listen to the bible... One day we will all be one like the Son and the Father are one.

The Episcopalians are knock-offs from the One True Church of Christ, the Catholic Church. You call yourself father (got that from the Catholics), you say you have the Sacraments (dido). You broke from the Catholic Church not because what the Church's teaching was wrong, but there was a bad Pope. This does not mean the Church is wrong, because we know the Church cannot be wrong, because She has the Magisterium (guidance of the Holy Spirit) ever since the first Pope, St. Peter! God Bless.
I like the idea of a mystery better. It doesn't involve metaphysics. I still don't understand what transubstantiation means. Too much explanation, IMO. I go to a Continuing Anglican church but I've also considered the Episcopals. What attracted me was the liturgy, latitudinism, C.S. Lewis and the fact it isn't quite "Reformed". It's unfortunate there is a schism in the Anglican Communion.
I think Fr Matthew does a good job with his videos. The Episcopal Church takes risks. They give the kind of people who don't want to go to church anyway a lot justifications not to do so.
The Catholics for example, stil won't ordain women . This idea dates back to a old Jewish tradition which considers people who tend the sick defiled. That doesn't really apply this day and age, so we have women serving on the altar. Jesus would approve of this as evidenced by his inclusion of women .
The explanation we recieved this morning was the EC adopted the sacrements out of the Scottish BCP rather than the British one. Liturgical Churches have been trending toward the Scot's version also.
This is a downright shame! This is just short of being blasphemous! If I hadn't done more research to find out you really are an Episcopalian Minister I would have SWORN this is some atehist joke about The Holy Eucharist. Never EVER make a joke about any Sacrament, ESPECIALLY The Eucharist. Although Episcopalians don't have The Real Presence like The Catholic Church this is still extremely disrespectful of our Lord. Please stop making jokes and funnies about The Most Holy Sacrament..thanks
Sorry to have offended. My intention, is to entertain and teach. Did I use any consecrated, or holy, bread in this movie? No. Any consecrated wine? No. So, my intention to keep the sacrament holy, or set apart, I believe is not compromised by this video. I merely used the implements, not the sacrament itself. Believing in the Real Presence is an option in the Episcopal Church, so I understand your concern. But, my conviction is that humor can be used to teach about God and Godly things.
That is rude. Also untrue. I was really trying to engage respectfully. We have the Nicene Creed, too. And, as you may know, we say "I believe in God" in every service. Are relations so strained among us that you must resort to libel? Unless you were making a joke, then: LOL!
Life is rude- but having said that you have been very respectful. It was partially a joke too ! I know what the Nicene Creed states and what's repeated in every service. While I can't speak the mind of anyone, I can say there is a level of revisionism and outright heresy at times that is so rampant in the church, it's near atheistic at times. Actions speak louder than words indeed - not yours specifically of course. The AC is in disarray for all the world to see-no need for more from me on that.
I don't feel the slightest bit confused. The real source of confusion, which is plain to see to anyone with sight, is the Anglican Communion. It's also a good idea to offer something substantial or specific when making accusations such as yours. Unless of course you've had a bit too much ECUSA Kool-Aid to drink :)
The Anglican Communion like the Church of Sweden, has retained the historic episcopate and apostolic succession. They celebrate a true eucharist. It is a well known fact that it is not reconigzed by the Catholic Church under the Bishop of Rome. They do however respect the position of the Anglican Communion, that should also the commenters do. I think the video is funny, but the message is a bit unclear, at least for me.
You sir "father" Matthew have really gone past the line of decency and integrity with this. Your intention to demonstrate the rite and meaning of the eucharist is fine, but you lowered yourself to an all time low with the ending. I can't imagine anyone being ok with this.
The microwaved french toast ala mode sequence, that leads to you and your anonymous hand with a plate of communion wafers?? What on earth were you thinking?? That's low thinking in my mind.
Umm...it was an explanation for why we use wafers and not other kinds of bread. Why not bagels? Why not french toast? Well, see...it is too messy. Crumbly or what have you. And also the circular imagery is important. It is a way to teach, with humor, why we use a particular form of bread. How is that "low"? Any more low than a crucified Lord?
Well I suppose you could change the title to "Idiots Guide to the Eucharist" and keep it going in yet another direction. There's just NOTHING funny to be had about this topic - but you seem to have found it.
Do you know what humor is? At its barest essentials it is "pattern recognition." The pleasure found at finding a pattern. C'est tout. This is connected to the joy of God's work in the world, I believe. And, patterns are important in education, too. You consider humor to be a mark of indignity, it seems. What a sad world to live in. I believe in the God of Jesus Christ, who turns dignity on its head through the power of the cross. Glory found on Golgotha! Funny, but true!
@FatherMatthew Humor itself is not a mark of indignity. But here it is misplaced, because, as you said, Eucharist means saying thanks, and it's inappropriate to say thanks for all the Lord has done and is doing for us, and giggle over puerile jokes at the same time. It's simply a distraction. Therefore, this video fails to convey the spirtual depth of this form of prayer, and the vast magnitude of Christ's service for us.
@TruthNerds Point taken. "a time to laugh, a time to weep" and so forth. To that end, I made a more serious video that tried to approach the depth of the Eucharist, entitled "Eucaristia." Please check it out.
@FatherMatthew: I am a Roman Catholic, and I personally wish that I could meet you in person someday. With only slight modifications, your videos have helped me to explain why the Sacraments, Eucharist in particular, are the very heart of the traditional Christian faith. As for the sequences with different sorts of bread, I think it was quite imaginative. I can't count how many times I have had to explain to people the importance of continuity with Christ and Passover in the wafer.
In all honesty, unless you made the effort to make sure you were ordained by a line of bishops who have not already lost their apostolic succession, it really makes no difference if 'blessed' bread and wine was used. Read 'Apostolicae Curae' by Pope Leo XIII.
I agree with Javnabeat. Galatians 1: 6-8: I am astonished that you are so promptly turning away from the one who called you in the grace of Christ and are going over to a different gospel- not that it is another gospel; except that there are trouble-makers among you who are seeking to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we ourselves or an angel from heaven preaches to you a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let God's curse be on him. Return to the Church of Christ: Catholic.
Don't worry Raven, soon a group of about 400,000 Traditional Anglicans will renter the Church of Christ under the Pope. They will be an example for the rest, and give many the courage they need to do this also.

sorry and i dont meen to mock your religion but the commuone you hold would be void and not truly the body and blood of christ because the episcapol church seperated from the catholic church who is the only source of true communine with God
I have to say that I find appreciation in this video a good technique of teaching...we are of two different beliefs but the same belief in the Holy Eucharist...good video
I think the word "sacrifice" should be in there somewhere....as they say in the BCP "a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world."
If I wasn't an Atheist I'd definitely make an effort to go to New York to see your sermons. Love your video's it's refreshing to see them, and how full of life you are. Great Job, bless you. And who knows I keep watching maybe I'll change my mind one day.
We distribute bread to 300+ people on a Sunday. Wafers are the best for this. On the other hand, I use leavened bread in more intimate settings all the time. This video's purpose is more to explain Eucharist with humor rather than to exalt one form of bread over the other. Notice Father Matthew liked both french toast and wafers?
There was a prison ministry once, the priest wasn't allowed to bring in wine, or his own food (the wafers) so they used saltines from the cafeteria and grape soda from the machine

I fear that I agree wih HCP on this one, Father Moretz. I know you mean to entertain as well as teach - but this episode was a little over the top. The antics were detracting from your message. As a fellow Canadian once said - the medium is the message.
Ah hah! I could tell just by reading the title of this video you'd been in the sacramental wine again Matthew. Bet you had more than just one bottle too eh?
I'm trying to determine your tone, but to answer your question, Anglicans (with the exception of Anglo-Catholics) tend to believe that Christ's Real Presence is an undefinable mystery. This is not Roman Catholic transubstantiation or Lutheran sacramental union, which has nothing to do with symbolism. The difference between Lutheran and Catholic theology is that in the former Christ is physically present; in the latter, the elements are changed into the body and blood.
Theophagy (the christian's Eucharist) is simply an ancient PAGAN ritual which predates Jesus by many centuries.

Hence, as you know, the same thing applies to Baptism and many others.
manlioman 1 month ago
@manlioman PLEASE read Rene Girard's "The Scapegoat." I'm serious. The point is not the bread and the wine drinking. The point is the bread and the wine drinking in light of the death and resurrection of Christ which calls out all sacrificial behavior. Peace isn't even the issue. Anyone can get peace after a stoning or sacrifice. This is its power. But the Christian Eucharist calls us back to the historical Christ event which is different.

The hebrew God and christians seem to favor scapegoats, enough to invent Jesus as a scapegoat in order to redeem humanity's sin (another great christian mechanism usful for instrumentalizing your flock).
manlioman 1 month ago
@manlioman Any time a person demonizes someone or excludes them and then gets a unifying force from that expulsion (whether you are demonizing pagans, Christians, scientists, or fundamentalists) this is scapegoating-like behavior. And it is not superstitious because it works to enculturate all sorts. All against one works. Yet there is another way. Jesus exposes the scapegoating process, and offers new life without killing and sacrifice by showing that God is in our victims.
FatherMatthew 1 month ago
@FatherMatthew The persecution and extermination of the pagans and hebrews, the destruction of their temples and statues of deities, was all performed by the Fathers of the Christian Church and the use of the Bible teachings. The punishments were all done for the love of Jesus.... that's christian love as historically demonstrated.
manlioman 1 month ago
@manlioman So, some atheists are sacrificially minded, and some aren't. Same with Christians. But the pivot point is the Way of Christ which renounces the evil of thinking that you can cast out evil and not become evil yourself. And Jesus was a historical person. We should talk after you read some Girard, if you are truly interested in inter-faith comparisons. I'd be interested to see what you'd make of him!

You know.. this looks like just how the new mass in the catholic church regards the "Eucharist".
What a shame...FALSE DOCTRINE

Catholicism is the Mass and the Sacraments. The Mass was destroyed in 1962 and the required Sacramental Form was destroyed in 1944. Sorry, it's over. The Church is in a state of auto-demolition as Paul VI stated in 1968. Of course it looks legitimate, but that's how Lucifer wants it. If you want the ability to stand when the punishment comes, know enough about your religion to know the names of the Trinity.

pt 1) I'm rather new to "organized religion" if you will and I went to an Episcopal service last Sunday. Is there a common response?
relussier 1 year ago
@relussier The practice of receiving the bread involves cupping one's right hand over the left to have it placed in your hand. The common response after eating is "Amen." Thanks for asking!
FatherMatthew 1 year ago
@relussier Hello friend. Don't be fooled by organized religion. Instead, accept Christ as your saviour. He died on the cross for all of our sins 2000 years ago. Religion is nothing more than man's ways and man's efforts (plural). Christianity is God's way and God's effort (singular).
johnthreesixteen316 1 year ago
@johnthreesixteen316 I accepted Christ as my saviour a long time ago. Religion is a combination of faith and worship. Christianity is a religion, it combines faith in God and His Christ and the worship of God. The practices involved in any service were the same initiated in the bible. I don't know by what you expect me to be fooled.

130Allegro 1 year ago
@130Allegro There is a spectrum of belief when it comes to the Lord's Presence in the Holy Eucharist in the Episcopal Church. The liturgy's language actually allows for that spectrum, making room for someone to value the Bread and Wine as a Symbol, or making room for someone to value the Real Presence of Jesus in the elements, and anywhere in between. This is part of the fruit of the specifically Anglican: Elizabethan Compromise.
FatherMatthew 1 year ago
@FatherMatthew Thank you for your informative reply. Researching the Elizabethan Compromise leads to the key historical details and some theology. So one remaining question I have is if some Episcopalians/Anglicans not only believe in transubstantiation but believe that the belief is essential. This question is important to ecumenism because the Catholic theology of ordination and apostolic succession focuses on transubstantiation in determining the validity of Episcopalian sacraments.

RockyBalboa211 1 year ago
Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.' And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins
RockyBalboa211 1 year ago
Christ was speaking figuratively when He mentions His body and blood.....John 16(King James Version) 25 "These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father."

Magnulus76 2 years ago
I think Fr Matthew does a good job with his videos. The Episcopal Church takes risks. They give the kind of people who don't want to go to church anyway a lot justifications not to do so.
The Catholics for example, stil won't ordain women . This idea dates back to a old Jewish tradition which considers people who tend the sick defiled. That doesn't really apply this day and age, so we have women serving on the altar. Jesus would approve of this as evidenced by his inclusion of women .

Actually the AEpiscopal Euchatist is based on what they were doing 125 AD and is the truest eucharist there is.

FatherMatthewArchive 2 years ago
Believing in God is an option in the Episcopal Church.
Andante735 2 years ago
That is rude. Also untrue. I was really trying to engage respectfully. We have the Nicene Creed, too. And, as you may know, we say "I believe in God" in every service. Are relations so strained among us that you must resort to libel? Unless you were making a joke, then: LOL!
FatherMatthew 2 years ago
Life is rude- but having said that you have been very respectful. It was partially a joke too ! I know what the Nicene Creed states and what's repeated in every service. While I can't speak the mind of anyone, I can say there is a level of revisionism and outright heresy at times that is so rampant in the church, it's near atheistic at times. Actions speak louder than words indeed - not yours specifically of course. The AC is in disarray for all the world to see-no need for more from me on that.
Andante735 2 years ago

The Anglican Communion like the Church of Sweden, has retained the historic episcopate and apostolic succession. They celebrate a true eucharist. It is a well known fact that it is not reconigzed by the Catholic Church under the Bishop of Rome. They do however respect the position of the Anglican Communion, that should also the commenters do. I think the video is funny, but the message is a bit unclear, at least for me.
karpov89 2 years ago
This really is rather offensive. Thank God that the Anglican Church does NOT have the Real Presence in their so called "Eucharist."
catholicmilitant 2 years ago
You sir "father" Matthew have really gone past the line of decency and integrity with this. Your intention to demonstrate the rite and meaning of the eucharist is fine, but you lowered yourself to an all time low with the ending. I can't imagine anyone being ok with this.
Andante735 2 years ago
What part of the ending was "low" if I might ask?
FatherMatthew 2 years ago
The microwaved french toast ala mode sequence, that leads to you and your anonymous hand with a plate of communion wafers?? What on earth were you thinking?? That's low thinking in my mind.
Andante735 2 years ago
Umm...it was an explanation for why we use wafers and not other kinds of bread. Why not bagels? Why not french toast? Well, see...it is too messy. Crumbly or what have you. And also the circular imagery is important. It is a way to teach, with humor, why we use a particular form of bread. How is that "low"? Any more low than a crucified Lord?
FatherMatthew 2 years ago
Well I suppose you could change the title to "Idiots Guide to the Eucharist" and keep it going in yet another direction. There's just NOTHING funny to be had about this topic - but you seem to have found it.
Andante735 2 years ago
Do you know what humor is? At its barest essentials it is "pattern recognition." The pleasure found at finding a pattern. C'est tout. This is connected to the joy of God's work in the world, I believe. And, patterns are important in education, too. You consider humor to be a mark of indignity, it seems. What a sad world to live in. I believe in the God of Jesus Christ, who turns dignity on its head through the power of the cross. Glory found on Golgotha! Funny, but true!
FatherMatthew 2 years ago
@FatherMatthew Humor itself is not a mark of indignity. But here it is misplaced, because, as you said, Eucharist means saying thanks, and it's inappropriate to say thanks for all the Lord has done and is doing for us, and giggle over puerile jokes at the same time. It's simply a distraction. Therefore, this video fails to convey the spirtual depth of this form of prayer, and the vast magnitude of Christ's service for us.
TruthNerds 1 year ago
@TruthNerds Point taken. "a time to laugh, a time to weep" and so forth. To that end, I made a more serious video that tried to approach the depth of the Eucharist, entitled "Eucaristia." Please check it out.
FatherMatthew 1 year ago
@FatherMatthew: I am a Roman Catholic, and I personally wish that I could meet you in person someday. With only slight modifications, your videos have helped me to explain why the Sacraments, Eucharist in particular, are the very heart of the traditional Christian faith. As for the sequences with different sorts of bread, I think it was quite imaginative. I can't count how many times I have had to explain to people the importance of continuity with Christ and Passover in the wafer.

Wafers?! I thought you were better off with the rye. A little closer to real meal sharing.

Fair enough, Father. I'm a fan of Cheez-its myself! ;)

There was a prison ministry once, the priest wasn't allowed to bring in wine, or his own food (the wafers) so they used saltines from the cafeteria and grape soda from the machine

Just keep up the good work, I love it when these come out.

I fear that I agree wih HCP on this one, Father Moretz. I know you mean to entertain as well as teach - but this episode was a little over the top. The antics were detracting from your message. As a fellow Canadian once said - the medium is the message.

Disembodied hands. Very Alton Brown (Food Network's "Good Eats"). Great video.

Indeed, Father Matthew. This reminded me of Alton's shows even before I saw the comment. Good job!

Ah hah! I could tell just by reading the title of this video you'd been in the sacramental wine again Matthew. Bet you had more than just one bottle too eh?

So do you do trans-mutation then? Or is it more like Luther was on about and it being something between symbolism and actual substance change?
lydiasaintjohn 3 years ago 3
I'm trying to determine your tone, but to answer your question, Anglicans (with the exception of Anglo-Catholics) tend to believe that Christ's Real Presence is an undefinable mystery. This is not Roman Catholic transubstantiation or Lutheran sacramental union, which has nothing to do with symbolism. The difference between Lutheran and Catholic theology is that in the former Christ is physically present; in the latter, the elements are changed into the body and blood.
