Yes, and many Europeans have taken advantage of well paid jobs (relatively) compared to their home countries. Its a decision that benifits both parties. But, it is a countries right to protect its jobs for its people when the going gets tough.

If it helps, I have the utmost respect for Eastern European Immigrants - and by no means would I want to disrespect the work that they have done in Ireland. But you must understand that a government has to protect its own people (including Eastern Europeans who have been residents for over 7 years...[is that right?]) as it is their duty to do so. The minimum wage has to be reduced because the problem lies with our high costs. Highly paid workers need to have take a pay cut. The supermarkets and clothes shops need to reduce their prices. The dole needs to be cut by at least €13 a week. College fees should NOT be re-introduced because the emphasis now is about having a high skilled qualified workforce who will be available when things pick up again.

I work with a few non nationals and they tell me it is far too expensive for them to stay here without a job. Quite a number of them have returned home. I think most of them that are staying have children in school here. I do understand were your coming from though- when did Nigeria join the E.U; and America and Russia for that matter.

simple solution..kick out the non-nationals that ave no employment,means test the dole,amend the free legal aid system(SERIOUS PROBLEM),abolish the seanead,cut T.Ds wages,make judges pay a pension levy-they are a disgrace to the nation.cut the public sector,cut the minimum wage to create more jobs.

Yes, and many Europeans have taken advantage of well paid jobs (relatively) compared to their home countries. Its a decision that benifits both parties. But, it is a countries right to protect its jobs for its people when the going gets tough.
You say "irish people staying on the dole" and I agree with you, and the benifit system needs a big overhaul.

If it helps, I have the utmost respect for Eastern European Immigrants - and by no means would I want to disrespect the work that they have done in Ireland. But you must understand that a government has to protect its own people (including Eastern Europeans who have been residents for over 7 years...[is that right?]) as it is their duty to do so. I would expect the Lithuanian government to do the same, as well as the Polish - and I would annoyed if they didn't.

We are in deep trouble and its going to get even worse in 2010.
The minimum wage has to be reduced because the problem lies with our high costs. Highly paid workers need to have take a pay cut. The supermarkets and clothes shops need to reduce their prices. The dole needs to be cut by at least €13 a week. College fees should NOT be re-introduced because the emphasis now is about having a high skilled qualified workforce who will be available when things pick up again.

The bankers didn't "single handedly" destroy this country. The whole consumer society that developed in Ireland did - and thats everyones responsibility. With one of the highest GDP per capita in the world, we could of afforded to save some of our money to use in a bad time, surely?
