I've always had a blind (deaf) spot for Domingo but this role suits him. The thickening of the tone on the high note on 'piegare' 2:08 is what you don't get from the great tenors. Interesting to compare with the 1992 clip where he focuses better, but it doesn't have the abandon here. I think the audio clip Onegin65 has posted of the duet with Price is as good as Domingo gets he really throws himself into it.
No but I was cast in it. I left after artistic differences with the conductor - which got him fired. People don't appreciate just how opressive the story is. I was singing Talpa and told the mezzo that my character was waiting to die. She was outraged. She seemed to think it was Rondine.
Del Monaco really used to chew up the stage on this aria. Domingo is far better however, except for the very top note. He is the most important opera tenor of all time.
You are right Mariusz, he said that, he was singing lighter and with less volume as he got older. Until his 40 he make big theaters shake, he had a BIG voice, like Del Monaco, Corelli in volume, everybody knows that he never sung Cs confortable but a great B.
most likely even before then domingo lost the power. thats what happens when you sing SO many roles in very different fachs as he did. otello, boheme and then a rigoletto in the same month in the late seventies! WOW! BALLS my friend. balls!
If that was indeed the case, (and I am not saying it was not, I just have no personal knowledge), It think I would call it something other than "balls". I guess I would ask the question "Why?".. . ..

Powerful and heartbreaking: this is one of the great lesser-known arias delivered by the master.

@gratecourt What are you talking about? There is no thickening on that tone, he hastrouble hitting it. It sounds thin and white.

Domingo is all man-has anyone seen Il Tabarro live? Is it really grim and depressing?
elephantbarbiegirl 2 years ago
I haven't seen it live but it's depressing on video too, lol.
I've only seen the version that is here in full on Youtube with Domingo Stratas and Pons from 1992, and it's very good.

I am not a big Domgino fan either, but here the voice sounds so fresh and juicy...love this rendition. He sounds and looks the role for a 100%
