@CraftyPip Yeah I know, I Just hate seeing her really gone, by far the must beautiful P-51 I have ever seen, Well (only from pictures & videos) not much more I can say
@MetalMachine346 I find it a little difficult to see a pilot deliberately colliding with another aircraft to destroy it under these circumstances, as he would not know the consequences of his actions in relation to his own safety and that of his aircraft. The film clip certainly appears to show a situation from which the Skyraider pilot should have been able to avoid an accident occuring. Hey.... stranger things have happened.
Next to the Spitfire I think this is one of my favourite aircraft...the howling I believe is caused by air passing through an air intake on the underside of the aircraft
It comes mostly from air passing through the gunports if they are unplugged, and sometimes from air passing through the oil and coolant shutters over the radiator. The "whine" sounds different depending on which one it is. It usually happens during airspeed or angle of attack changes (i.e. pitching upward).
Not sure which one in this case, but I'm guessing the gunports.
@TheGreenGriffon Um, no. The howling sound is caused entirely by the massive supercharger. It's completely independent of airspeed, only high throttle settings that pull large amounts of boost will cause it.
No offense, but if it was the supercharger you would hear it at all times, not just when the plane is at severe angles of attack and extremely high air speeds. If it was a high throttle setting it would "howl" at level flight as well, which isn't heard. Why would you not hear it howling on takeoff, which I'm sure is under full throttle conditions?
@arraisan The P-51 A models engine was the Allison -1710 built by The Allison Engine Company which was a division of General Motors. Both were American companies.
I am no historian or statistician but many factors contributed to the war effort to one degree or another . I like aircraft for what they are and not so much on what they achieve. Thank you for your insight on the subject.
@1littlelee Yep, you are right. Many say that most WW2 work was done by IL2 Sturmoviks. After that many say that USA's most important plane was Chance Vought F4U Corsair.
@arraisan there are 2 saying on where the howling comes from, the 1st is the blower, but on this plane it comes from the open gun ports........its like blowing across a bottle. If you want to hear it for youe self get down to Headcorn airfield (kent) and you will see it most weekend doing a low flypast.
@LANDYMAN090 Hi, thanks for your answer. I'll take your word on sound. I really really want to see P51 in action live, but I live in Finland . So there is a long way to Kent. Maybe someday I'll come to see it anyway.
I have seen this airplane in person at the air show in Oshkosh,Wisconsin! And heard it too!I even got to run my hands down her smooth aluminum skin!Fantastic airplane!
Where as the Spitfire seems attract a lot of attention, I think this aircraft has that something extra. It needs to be seen in person to really appreciate its presence.

@CraftyPip correction It was the Skyraider that hit BBD, not the other way around
& yeah I have my own opinions.....but I think it was a set up to take America's most
Beautiful doll away :(

It's funny to see British engine in a American plane which British hesitated to share. Afterall P51 was the gamebreaker.
BTW: Where this howling sound comes?

The engine is the American made Packard V-1650. An updated and improved variant of the Rolls Royce Merlin.

@lander4545 Yes you are right, but weren't the the P51A -models equipped with British made Allison V-1710 engines?

corsiar and spitfires did more in the war than the P51 and did the BF109
