If you live in the southern U.S., this is most likely a larva of the family of beetles known as scarabidae. If you keep it and take care of it, it will metamorphose into a large beetle that can be kept as a pet and fed sugary food such as leftover fruit and honey. Dropping it like that will kill it, and is disrespectful.

don't kill them, they turn into really awesome Rhino Beetles. They are good for killing off pests, and they make pretty ok pets, though they should be left in the back yard. They can be eaten, but its such a waste of such a wonderful insect.
