When I saw this on MTV back in the 80's I thought it was a mock on world war conflicts. Each child's name represented a country in the war. Hans = Germany, Suki = Japan
I love this song. Being small at the time I had no idea it was by the great Peter Gabriel. Imagin my surprise. I use to think they said, "she's so pop-u-lar." Looking at the lyrics as I watch this today, I truely believe this to be a great and important song on so many levels. Peter really has a great mind and a lot of guts to be so bold with his creativity.
It was sooo good to grow up to this music. I'd be in trouble these days, the music just ain't the same at all. This sounds so much better and different and creative then the stuff out now.
@crazycrow76 Gaga's last album was very creative but this new album is sorta weak... I mean, she says I'm livin' on the edge' about 295 time in that first release
@Purple1984Rain The audio is actually pitched higher and the treble is adjusted from the original version. For whatever its worth, the actual music video for this amassed around 5 million views apiece on WMG and Vevo, though I don't know what happened to it.
This isn't right, who changed the music video? What about the kids dressed as grown-ups at a dining party? What about Peter crawling with the Cupee Dolls? This sucks why is this music video so hard to find?
this song is so personally moving..i never realized whats really going on in the world and listening to this for so long helped me bring it forward. this song makes me want to weep, weep for humanity and how were so dangerously lost. think of all the wars we have been in..as an american-i have never given it a second though. have you ever cried or been sad because people are dying in wars that they dont even want? i doubt you have. war is just a part of the news, just another topic-its nothing.
@SlumberCloud Actually, one could easily interpret the non existent line, "she's so popular" as fitting with the song. Being that war or conflict is raging somewhere on the planet at any given time, as it was when the song was written, war does indeed appear to be very popular. I was one of those who misheard the line, but I only heard the song 30 years ago on radio without benefit of a lyric sheet or any of the online lyric sites available today.
bien... oui... certainly the last century in 3 minutes... likely not intended by Gabriel... but the last century certainly... duck and cover... I can still remember the "air raid sirens" in my town being tested when I grew up in the early 70's.... jeux sans frontier... we have forgotten the late 70's early 80's green/no-nukes times... I hate to say it... but it was Reagan that put a stop to it momentarily.. after Able Archer '83... I hate Republicans.... but he made sure the iron curtain fell
@piper131313 Not a Republican fan myself either. I will give Reagan credit for bringing down the Iron Curtain, but with an asterix. He did it by out spending what the Soviet economy could handle and massively increased our national debt in the process.
Notice that this is an alternate version, if you compare the song here to the version released on "Peter Gabriel" from 1980 (AKA Melt) they're different
@newtoupstate 1) It's not generally regarded as correct to use "good" as an adverb 2) There is no message to listen to behind the song. Perhaps in the song, of the song, conveyed by the song, but definitely not behind it, that would be backmasking or some shit. 3) If you actually think this song has a valuable semantic, you are high as fuck and need to reconsider everything.
@AdamG1983 Ever listen to "The Dreaming" by Kate Bush? A lot of Gabriel/Gilmour influences on it...and a bunch of CMI Fairlight. Still her best collection.
@iluvflagunlaws Coloreds? My gosh man are you back in the 1960"s... I dont use the term african american but coloreds... really? I just simply say black if a description is needed...
@AdamG1983 Because it doesn't make big name record labels tons of money. Commercial music is just that, mindless entertainment made for immediate and wide-spread appeal. After all, the average American is just that: average.
@dirtboyfsr Speaking as an American, I completely agree. Most people I talk to don't understand with my fascination for 1970s-1980s alternative, art-rock, prog-rock, punk, post-punk, synthpop, electro, new wave, new romantic, college rock, indie rock, alternative dance, alternative pop, alternative rock, especially those from the U.K., Germany, & France.
@AdamG1983 you just have to open your ears and mind. great music is out there, but like your parents when you were young, your mind is set on the past as being better then today.
@AdamG1983...Not quite on the same epic scale as Gabriel, but check out the song "Crash Years" by The New Pornographers. Similar whistle part AND video.
@AdamG1983 because the theme of the last generation or two was "Everyone's a winner!". The government says we need to tolerate people like J.B. and R.B. (i wont defile these comments with thier names), and this stops people like this from succeeding. It also means that the 'special needs' automatically get 98% while the geniuses need to work for an 80%.

"Whisting tunes we piss on the coons in the jungle!" (uncencored version). Haha, my friends this is by no means a song about innocent child's play....
@StaticisStranded2 - It's the Dolby 5.1 version from Peter Gabriel's "Play: The Videos" DVD, downmixed to 2.0. I've just played the 5.1 version from the DVD through two speakers only and it sounds identical to this one.
What praytell is "fucked up" about it? It's highlighting that racism doesn't exist between children, and that simple games bring these children from different cultres etc together, it's actually rather beautiful!
@nekogod Actually its about the childishness of war perhaps best summed up by the line Adolph (Hitler) builds a bonfire, Enrico (Fermi) plays with it. It is a great song though
Jeux sans frontieres Jeux sans frontieres Jeux sans frontieres Jeux sans frontieres Hans plays with Lotte Lotte plays with Jane Jane plays with Willi Willi is happy again Suki plays with Leo Sacha plays with Britt Adolf builts a bonfire Enrico plays with it
@mrquackadoodlemoo They have proven its an easy way to make money. They sell .25 washers to the government for $20.00 a piece because they dont need the paperwork looked over in a time of war.Besides it keeps the "upper crust",(10% of the world), in resources by killing everyone else off.Look up Eugenics, population control. We will be out of all natural resources and Social Security by 2035.Im glad I will be dead by then.
@STONESBOY74 most of the friends ive had never really were friends.. so maybe you just got lucky and didnt make friends with those people because they were jerks.
theres a reason for everything.. but nothing is certain, there is always choice to change things
As you see from my name I love Black Music but I also like Peter Gabriel and even I will say that it is in fact 'whistling tunes, we piss on the COONS in the jungle' Are you going to say I'm racist?
Interesting how until now it always sounded like he was saying "She's...so popular," but only now I hear that he's saying "Jeux sans frontier." Also, I've just noticed that there is another version of this video, which is also on YouTube (labeled "The official video," 1983). It doesn't have the little people walking around or the toy cars, etc. and instead shows more of Peter Gabriel and has children sitting at a dinner party; it doesn't make a political statement as much as this version does
@tcdarden13 lol yea i know how you fell cant remember it but there was a song i listed to for YEARS! and never understood it until my friend told me what it was :)
That's not actually him singing "Jeux sans frontiers" it's Kate Bush I believe. As for the other video you refer to, that would be the actual video. I'm not 100% sure what this is, some sort of remix and video mix, or possibly a very rare demo for the video
For God's sake the word was GOONS I have the original vinyl and the lyrics were in it. GOONS was what some soldiers called the enemy in the Vietnam Conflict
Suck my balls. I have every right to be who i am as you have to be you.....the original lyric was coons...not MY lyric you fucknut but Gabriels, it was ironic by context.
Fuck off and burn your bra at some two bob anti something or other rally you fucking dunce.
Oh and as soon as someone has a different belief system from you they are 'racist' or 'homophobic' or age-ist' or 'xenophobic' or some other jumped up politicised vote catching clusterfuck spin. I am none of the above as i dont give a cunt.
its coons the original lyric until the wacko liberals made a stink... typical... i guess its ok to kiss baboons huh ... but not piss on a coon ... go kiss your tree and kill some fetuses atypical liberal ..
sad but what some people will do to maintain political correctness... altering lyrics as though they are the definitive interpreters of meaning! I believe Chromalusion about the origin of the Lyric
I think it was orginally 'COONS'
and that needn't be a racial slur, as coon is also a slang term for raccoons

I believe it's "Adolf builds a bonfire", not "builts a bonfire."
also missing a couple lines
"If looks could kill, they probably will" comes up again before the second "Games without frontiers-war without tears."
"Jeux San Frontieres" sounds nothing like "She's so popular". I've seen it posted as official lyrics, but I don't think that's for this version.

My last comment should have read "British game show" The original line was "we piss on baboons in the jungle"
stevegrierson 1 year ago
This song is actually about the British TV shoe "Its a knockout" Sorry to burst everyones bubble

Nice but I miss the *original* video with the kids playing dress up and acting like grownups.

In my opinion a stunningly good anti-war/anti-tribalism song.

I try to go by what the lyrics on the albums say.

As you see from my name I love Black Music but I also like Peter Gabriel and even I will say that it is in fact 'whistling tunes, we piss on the COONS in the jungle' Are you going to say I'm racist?
soulandmotown 1 year ago

MrRolex96 1 year ago
That's not actually him singing "Jeux sans frontiers" it's Kate Bush I believe. As for the other video you refer to, that would be the actual video. I'm not 100% sure what this is, some sort of remix and video mix, or possibly a very rare demo for the video
TeeStall 1 year ago
@TeeStall Yes, it is Kate Bush singing "Jeux sans frontiers". She also sang backing vocals on "No Self Control" from the same album.

Soldiers called the enemy in the Vietnam War GOOKS not GOONS

For God's sake the word was GOONS I have the original vinyl and the lyrics were in it. GOONS was what some soldiers called the enemy in the Vietnam Conflict

Suck my balls. I have every right to be who i am as you have to be you.....the original lyric was coons...not MY lyric you fucknut but Gabriels, it was ironic by context.
Fuck off and burn your bra at some two bob anti something or other rally you fucking dunce.
GUNNAHZ70 1 year ago
Oh and as soon as someone has a different belief system from you they are 'racist' or 'homophobic' or age-ist' or 'xenophobic' or some other jumped up politicised vote catching clusterfuck spin. I am none of the above as i dont give a cunt.

its coons the original lyric until the wacko liberals made a stink... typical... i guess its ok to kiss baboons huh ... but not piss on a coon ... go kiss your tree and kill some fetuses atypical liberal ..
chromalusion 1 year ago
sad but what some people will do to maintain political correctness... altering lyrics as though they are the definitive interpreters of meaning! I believe Chromalusion about the origin of the Lyric
I think it was orginally 'COONS'
and that needn't be a racial slur, as coon is also a slang term for raccoons
