It's not about "violence" vs. "non-violence" it's about effective action. Black Bloc seem to think they can beat capitalism by breaking its windows, and they can beat the cops by throwing stuff at them.

Capitalism can only be defeated by a mass working-class movement capable of taking over production. Such a movement can only be built by involving workers in their millions. And infantile play-radicalism like this just puts workers off. This is the -opposite- of a general strike.

And yes, I realize that not everyone is responsible for setting fires at the protest and most of them were protesting peacefully. This movement needs centralized leadership to prevent things like this from happening. You can't blame the police in this situation, making the distinction between which members of an angry mob are violent and which are not is not an easy one to make, especially at night.

@anarcrustie I read the Wu Ming review. I agree Berlusconi's Mousetrap isn't perfect. But frankly, I am amazed its the only independent media critical of the "diversity of tactics" then and now. In my view, it understates the reality of extremism of both the Media/Police and the compromised Black Bloc. I have a very close friend who was nearly killed in the Diaz and he got me on to this film. Even if we attribute say, 50% less culpability to the Black Bloc, then its still a damning inditement

This video also doesn't call into account the full facts of Police politics. They sent an open letter to the mayor declaring their confusion about how to deal with the strike from their union. That means they weren't too keen to act during the day. Also, odds are, they couldn't afford the political cost of a repeated attack. Fyi, the carbon from burning dumpsters helps negate the effects of tear gas. Also, there were way more of you in the day than at night, too many to Police effectively.

@hacktik101 It's been reported with a noted lack of evidence. Note how the Police attacked you without any provocation in the first place. The bloc appeared after the Police attacked the encampment. On the following day, they attacked the property of the banks you are protesting. Also, the Police gave a dispersal order and you refused to leave, that was going to happen regardless of what the bloc did. They didn't show up in riot gear just for the fun of it.

but yeah, the black bloc in OO were clearly part of OO, but are you aware that OO was evicted by police two days before this? the police had an anti-occupy stance long before the black bloc showed up, attributing police violence to them is ridiculous. people got aggressive after the eviction, and in fact the protests were able to continue in part because of this: people illegally retook the plaza and tore down police fences.

Black Bloc is a group of police and hired criminals whose sole goal is to make OWS look very bad on camera. The person who shot the vid above films the police line while the truly dangerous police are making fires behind her. Then a girl uses water to try to help with gas.

If OWS committees were legit they would be getting this info out to people. As it stands a bunch of uninformed kids are being used.

@eatjones hella misinformatioin. blackbloc is a time honored anarchist tactic with a global history. also, a black bloc is when a large group of people wears all black, there was actually no black bloc at this event. there was one earlier in the day, at the anti-capitalist feeder march. this event just has scattered kids with masks, not a distinct/organized group. and yeah, they set their barricades on fire when the police attacked them. that's self defense, i don't see why it's so terrible.
