  • Someone reply! If im using my mac mini as home theater just to use the internet and to watch youtube videos and such,l such i upgrade my ram or leave it as is?

  • @QuestionMarkHunter31 you should be able to leave it as is

  • i paid $30 for 8gigs for my mac mini 3 months ago

  • AWESOME videos

  • Thanks for the helpful video. I was able to upgrade my mini with the Crucial 8GB kit successfully. It made a huge difference on performance. But I notice the machine to be noisier than before the upgrade, and the noise doesn't seem to be coming from the fan. Any thoughts as to why?

  • Does this void the warranty

  • Comment removed

  • Now that Ram kit costs 45$ only

  • I just broke one of the bracket on the top slot, is there anyway of working around this or am I stuck with only 4gb?

  • @jvices take it to the Apple Store to get it fix..

  • hey i bought a DDR3 1066Mhz PC3-8500 2 x 4gig, should that work on my june 2010 mac mini?

  • @YUNGPURSWAZION you can get 16gb of ram for the iMac although it costs $600. You can do what DetroitBORG did and buy the ram and upgrade yourself. It's very easy and DetroitBORG has a video on how to do it. I hope this helped.

  • please message me back or reply to my question i need help cuz i was doing some searching and some forums said it's possible to upgrade to 16GB of ram... i want 16GB becuz I'm getting getting into video production and I'm going to be using final cut pro and twixtor etc and I'm also an artist

    please message me back !

  • thankz a lot for the video you're super awesome can i upgrade to 16 GB? i just got a 2011 mac mini

  • Correction on your system specs, that graphics card is 288MB not 512MB according to the Apple Store.

  • What if I broke the top retainer clips? Can they be fixed?

  • If u get the base model a RAM upgrade is a must!!! 8 gigs of ram makes it run a lot smoother.

  • well.... i just decided to get this instead of a PC. thank-you :D

  • if only i had thumbs...

  • Do you need to upgrade your processor for 8g's of RAM

  • Ordered my 8 gb ram chips from them 3-5 days

  • How good is the mac mini with 8gb ram run just opening say 1 application at a time, how long does it take to open final cut pro for instance?

  • I just tried using cinebench on my i3 pc and I got 14.36 open GL and 2.85 cpu, any thoughts ?

  • @xLITTLETOMMYx What is your GPU? That's the deciding factor.

  • What do you think is better a 27" iMac base model or 2011 Mac mini i5 w/ 8gb ram

  • My thumbs were blown off in NOM. =[

  • Wow very good review. So basically if you use only few apps at the same time mac doesn't slow down too much. But changing 2gb to 8 gb should make better result than 100 p.

  • Great video mate really nice

  • Do you think this Mac mini can handle photo editing software (Aperture 3) quite well after the 8GB RAM upgrade?

  • Should i be concerned if after installing 8 gigs of ram it i notice that the mac mini gets a lot warmer

  • seriously who pays $100 to load all their apps at the same time??

  • @patomargain Adding more ram makes the system more responsive in general, it's not just about loading apps at the same time, that would be pointless.

  • @patomargain First of all, it does not cost 100$, you can get 8 gigs of RAM for about 40-50$. Second, people like me need 8 GB of RAM, because I ran 8-12 apps simultaneously.

  • I need Mac Mini!

  • i love how the best windows computers are macs :)

  • @android059 Agreed! :)

  • Will you loose any memory?

  • @imacc2009 Nope.

  • @imacc2009 Nope.

  • What if someone doesn't have two thumbs!? O_O

  • @imacc2009 Toes will do!

  • does final cut come on it or you gotta buy that program?

  • @MattFMF Do, it's a separate expense, it comes with iMovie out of the box.

  • @Detroitborg OK thanks so much for your quick response man :)

  • If i run PS Elements with 4GB ram, will it runmsmooth or laggy? Btw with the 599 model.

  • @ArthurTHTV It will run smoothly, no problem there.

  • Can I play Second Life without problems with this computer????

  • @leptium I can tell you the Mac mini significantly outpaces the game's system requirements, so I'm assuming so.

  • Can u use the Mac minis memory for another computer if they fit

  • Now I probably sound like an idiot but without a disk drive how do I get Microsoft office? Do I just download it from the Internet somewhere? Or do I have to buy an external disc drive.

  • @JTownPandaMan That's a very popular question. The way I understand it, you still have to buy the discs and then you use your License Key to download it from Microsoft to your Mac mini.

  • the intel HD GPU is NOT for gaming, without a good gpu, the video memory is nothing.

  • For FCP X, sc2 and wow, on a 1,8k $ budget (roughly, 10k nok to be more precise) would I be better of spending them on an iMac or a minimac, I'd be upgrading and swapping the ram myself in both so thats no biggie. I'd like to include wireless mouse/keyboard (nice editing from bed) but the screen is no big deal (mini wise) because I have several good ones at home. What do you recommend?

  • @svenningen Hmmm, good question. There is no about you can get a more powerful Mac mini for less than a base iMac. But I ultimately would recommend the iMac since you get the most hardware for the money. If you want to edit video, the 27" iMac is your best bet.

  • @DetroitBORG Thanks for a quick and good response, means alot! I could probably man up and work more/save longer for the cheap 27" its "only" 735$ in difference! Is that jump worth it. The only use of this machine will be wow,sc2 but mainly FCP x/7, because I'm going to buy a new gaming rig eventually. =) thanks for responding at all! :D means alot!

    -Svenning

  • @svenningen My pleasure. I do think the iMac upgrade is worth it, but $735 isn't a trivial amount for most people. Enjoy!

  • for the people that use crucial, do not use their memory diagnosis becuase they try to trick you into saying that only one of your sticks is working but thatnks to this video i found out how to truly see how much ram i have thank you

  • What if i lost my two thubs in the war :c ?

  • meow

  • is the mac mini with the 8 gb upgrade enough for photo editing>?

  • @DetroitBORG yeah, I have to agree with you. Thanks for replying :)

  • hi, is it really that easy to upgrade RAM, no other in system configuration that you have to do to install it? and does it not affect any data you have on the mac??

sorry im rather new to the upgrading side of things

  • @1d2p3 Nope, just plug in your chips and you're good to go! Nothing is effected by replacing or upgrading your system RAM.

  • @DetroitBORG wow thanks. any website you recommend buying RAM from? im from the UK mind...?

  • Wooh hoo Starcraft 2. As always your videos are perfect.

  • @GnomeGuardian Thanks :)

  • Hey mike! what do you think is the best monitor for the mac mini besides the apple cinema display?

  • @ThatsTechtastic The best affordable monitors (priced below the Thunderbolt Display) is from Samsung like the PX series. The best monitors are from Eizo.

  • I like!!

  • Do I need Mac ram

    Or I can just get so-dim notebook DDR3 1333 MHz pc3-10600

    For Mac mini 2011

  • @faizanjoyia There is no Mac RAM. Of course they use Notebook RAM so make sure it is 1.333 MHz CL9 and clocked 9-9-9-24. If you can't get Samsung RAM, try Corsair or Kingston.

  • Thanks awesome man, Just ordered a pair then, to go in my freshly arrived mini :D

  • Is this a mac mini and a monitor that you are using? like a thunderbolt monitor

  • TO EVERYONE WONDERING ABOUT DETROITBORG JOBS! HE WORKS FOR COOELY!

  • Hi :) What's your opinion on the HDTV rumour spreading? Do you think it's wise for Apple to start their own TV range?

  • Ironically I was just tracking my order from crucial for 8gb before seeing your video. I've been ordering from them since the PowerPC days. Great vid, thanks for sharing!

  • @hotlatinmonkey Yep, I've been buying RAM from them since I use to build my own PC systems :).

  • Vid Con* (sometimes I hate iPad spellcheck)

  • Hey DetroitBORG! Just wanted to ask! Did u go to CID on?

  • @MrBrownie2310 Nah, but would love to next time.

  • I like the intro "Mike"

  • @quickpwnman28 Yeah, never felt comfortable calling myself DetroitBORG only ;)

  • @DetroitBORG I sorta like the new intro you give me a more personal feel when I watch the video, like ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy!

  • Nice to see how easy it is to add ram. I added ram to my 2008 mini, real pain. My first strawberry imac had a wopping 32mb of ram that I upgraded to 256mb. That was a fun job too.

  • could you show us a hard drive upgrade?

  • @spiceyxxwiener That's a bit more involved, but I definitely will when I do one.

  • @DetroitBORG do you think its worth through an ssd into it?

  • Thanks for this video! I'm personally going to be buying a Server model in a couple of days for regular use. With the quad core i7, the Gdekbench scores are actually higher than ANY of the stock iMac models! Only downer on that Mac (which I think is great value) is it doesn't have dedicated graphics, which I would happily pay more for.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the hard drive to 7200 rpb?

  • @omygod143 Yes, you can swap out the HDD, it requires quite a bit more work to do however.

  • Also for anyone wondering NewEgg is having a sale on RAM right now.

    bit*ly/o045hl

just put a dot where the asterisk is

  • You're definitely the best apple reviewer on YouTube!!!

  • Mike, what was for yourself better value: the Mac Mini or the iMac? And second question: if I go for an iMac, can i then connect it to the 24" monitor, I've recently bought for my pc?

  • One of the very best Apple videos on YT! Great job man!

  • How can the MacBook air run so much better? It can't only be the SSd, I had a netbook with a ssd drive and it ran windows 7 like crap. I can't believe an 8 gig Mac only gets 12 frames a second, that is no better than the g4's got 5 years ago.

  • I`ve just upgraded my 09 mini (2.0 with 9400M) and my late 08 Macbook Pro 15" to 8GB, it`s probably the best upgrade you can do these days because ddr3 ram is extremely cheap these days (8GB kit for 40 quid).

Most macs will grab some ram for their integrated graphics so an upgrade is always a good choice.

  • the mac mini not bad but put in an ssd (but the fastes ssd on the world) and the 8 gb ram wich you did and an i7 prossesor 2nd g. than you can put the graphic card wich you can get from apple and for more gb an extern hdd with 1 T. And now you have the fastes mac mini 2011 on the world :D but it will be expensive :D

  • Great video! Hello from italy!!

  • Keep up the great work!!! Love your videos!!! Very detailed!!! :)

  • Mac Mini's Internal Parts Looking Clean...

  • @iBillKishen It is a thing of beauty, I love a tidy engine bay :).

  • Wow! Funny thing: when I was watching this video I randomly paused and you said "it will snap!" LOL

  • thanks for the videos!!!!!!!

  • Can you recommend HDD upgrade? I'm with Mac mini 2010 (320GB 2.5" 5400rpm HDD). SSD is too pricy for me, so i'm looking for a 2.5" HDD with 7200rpm.

  • awsome!

  • so cool the warranty is not voided when upgrading ram in a mac mini.

I love this video as you add so much life (ram) to your nice little mac mini. I am never going to buy ram from Apple as is to expensive versus 3rd party ram dealers. Wow I did not know until this video that the ram allocated for graphics would be increased, so cool to know!

  • How useful is it to upgrade from 4 to 8 GB in my MBP 13" Core 2 Duo? I have Lion now and it runs kind of choppy and it freezes up on Screenflow. Will apps and the OS itself run more smoothly?

  • Nice review/tutorial :) thanks for sharing!

  • Excellent, video, as always. Just one question. Can the new Mac Mini be upgraded to 16GB RAM?

  • Wow glad I subscribed just bought 8gbs of ram-guess I won't see much of a difference at least I'm installing a ssd

  • @Pizzcsn

    You @ replied yourself dumbass.

  • Haha that was nice! You maybe could try saying "Michael" or "Mike with DetroitBORG" to try to fill in those syllables :)

  • @Pizzscn oh never mind. You said the second one :)

  • I upgraded from 4 to 8 gigs of ram just recently on my 2010 MBP. Don't really notice much but it does let you run more programs at the same time without slowing down.

  • Do you buy and sell to organize tons of your machines?

  • Mike the DetroitBORG? I love it

  • Why is Apple ram so expensive?

  • Does unplugging the battery connector void the warranty on a MBP? Or is it only taking the battery out?

  • I heard you get an email on your mac durring the video, i thought it was mine :]

  • hey detroitborg,

ihavea 2.0ghz macbook pro. i had issues with mien and applefinally caved in and offered me a new replacement. also, they said if i wanted i could upgrade to the 2.2ghz high end model for 450 dollars more, which also includes the anti glare screen. i was originally gonna stick with a new replacement for the same one, and add the 100 dollar anti glare, but a jump to a higher spec is tempting.

if u had this offer for 450 to jump ship, would u do it? lol

  • i dont even have hands how am i suposed to open that? how am i typing this? with my nose on my ipad, thanks god, you took my hands, thanks steve jobs u give me the ipad

  • well i dont think minecraft is THAT intense.

  • Nice video mike :) thanks man :DD still don't know why you didn't pay that 1400 bucks for the 16gigs.. Cheap Ass.. tut.tut. ;)

  • Yerp :) @dman5595

  • Ahh ya see, thats just the dual core processor, which is fine, but then you just have the integrated graphics :/ but hey, what can you do :) @alanw516

  • Nope :) its an upgrade you are allowed to do :) @abby4u

  • is the warranty void if we upgrade the ram ourselves in a MBP rather than doing it via apple?

  • Comment removed

  • @abby4u Nope, it's a user accessible component, it will not void your warranty.

  • @DetroitBORG thnx

  • @DetroitBORG kind of off topic, but will upgrading ram on a PC void your warranty?

  • Comment removed

  • so would more ram help when gaming while screen recording?

  • Comment removed

  • @dman5595 Gaming on a Mac Mini is bull. Laggy as hell even if you add more ram.

  • Comment removed

  • @AnApplePerDay That's why Mac's weren't made for gaming and overpriced junk.

  • @alanw516 Macs are an opinion, you dont like them, i do, fare enough, i respect your views, but i definately prefer macs, and that work with gaming for me if i ever do feel like playing games :)

  • @AnApplePerDay Only thing good about a mac is the design which is probably the only reason why people buy macs..

  • @alanw516 I agree, Macs are praised highly for the design, but the software is also a big factor. Apple could EASILY bust in a 3 6Core 3GHZ processors with 64GB of RAM in all of their machines, which im glad they dont. the processors are easily competitive, maybe even faster than PCs.

  • @techyapplemanHD PCs and Macs have the same hardware. For example the mac mini has a 2.3 GHz dual-core i5 this is the i5 2410m and i have that one in my laptop. But the biggest difference is made by software

  • @techyapplemanHD nope, PCs have identical hardware if not better, now with bulldozer processors just around the corner and the next Intel extreme sandy bridge processors.

  • @techyapplemanHD i lold, LOL

  • Oops I mean awesome!

  • Awesome?

  • love your videos

  • Second

  • Cool, right when I log in, I see this video with 0 views! Good job @DetroitBORG... and I can't help it: FIRST!
