Actually the song wasn't written by Amadou and Mariam but by another great Malian song writer Alassane Soumano formerly from the group "the Asselar". The meaning isn't " don't be sad " because literally in bambara"I wassado" put all your effort into it".

Great song by Nayanks Bell, I grew up watching it on URTNA, and listening to it in 'Sundowner' and 'Late Date' in Nairobi, Kenya over 20 years ago and fell in love with the magical voice. The language she is singing is very similar to mine so base on what I gather is that "iwasado" we say iwasalo means be courageous or better yet have faith. She is telling this kid to have faith because only god knows what he does. And being down on yourself won't help you.

It's about a kid whose blind parents use to guide them (there are plenty of those in third world countries.) So this kid has no future since he his the "eyes" of his parents ... In this song, she just tells to this kid that he had no chance, and no one choses his parents. The life he is having was god choices ...

The song, which is in Malinke/Bambara, is about the hardship of being blind in Africa. It is about two blind parents who wonder whether they should send their kids to school or leave them home as their own caregivers/guides--they are understandably torn about the latter. Unfortunately, it is badly sang by Nayanka who doesn't speak any Malinke.
