Actually the song wasn't written by Amadou and Mariam but by another great Malian song writer Alassane Soumano formerly from the group "the Asselar". The meaning isn't " don't be sad " because literally in bambara"I wassado" put all your effort into it".

Thank you all!
Great song by Nayanks Bell, I grew up watching it on URTNA, and listening to it in 'Sundowner' and 'Late Date' in Nairobi, Kenya over 20 years ago and fell in love with the magical voice. This is a gem, a true legendary song and I am glad I found it on youtube after looking for it for years. Anyone know where I can get/rip/buy this song from? I feel goosebumps just listening to it again...
I always have great and fond memories of my mother when i listen to this soulful rendition. Great music that formed my growing up under that great woman in my life.
The language she is singing is very similar to mine so base on what I gather is that "iwasado" we say iwasalo means be courageous or better yet have faith. She is telling this kid to have faith because only god knows what he does. And being down on yourself won't help you.
I will not translate, but tell you what it is about:
It's about a kid whose blind parents use to guide them (there are plenty of those in third world countries.) So this kid has no future since he his the "eyes" of his parents ... In this song, she just tells to this kid that he had no chance, and no one choses his parents. The life he is having was god choices ...
@bichonn Bichonn, with all due respect, "Iwasado" (I-wasa-do) doesn't mean "don't be sad". It means "be courageous" or "be strong". If we are going to translate our African languages, we need to make sure that we do it accurately. As I wrote before, the song was originally written by the (blind) Malian couple Amadou and Mariam in Malinke/Bambara, and interpreted by Nayanka Bell whose knowledge of the language is quite limited.
@bichonn WOW! VERY SAD INDEED, I AM FROM SENEGAL AND AS U STATED THEIR ARE LOTS KIDS WHO'S DUTIES ARE TO SERVE THEIR . PARENTS(BLIND/ALBINO) FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET, THEY GUIDE THEIR PARENT(S) BEGGING ON THE STREET FOR SURVIVAL. THESE KIDS ARE USUALLY NEGLECTED AND INVISIBLE. THX FOR THE SUMMARIZING IT FOR US.
@luxureberry This song has a very interesting history. It was written by the famous Malian couple Amadou and Mariam, who are both blind. The song, which is in Malinke/Bambara, is about the hardship of being blind in Africa. It is about two blind parents who wonder whether they should send their kids to school or leave them home as their own caregivers/guides--they are understandably torn about the latter. Unfortunately, it is badly sang by Nayanka who doesn't speak any Malinke.
@jacobson00 I will not engage in a polemic with you. If you are going to question what I write, you need to provide facts. I was still living in Ivory Coast when the couple was interviewed, and they told the story of the song. Of course, not many people know about this. I am sure you can write to them, if you really want to know.
Prends soin d’eux. (Iwasado= prends soin).

Hey, I'm a Zambian. If you mention the name Nayanka Bell not many a Zambian will even recognise it. If you mention the song Atoula some will have something to say. But if you try to sing the song many will get excited becuase they appreciate very much. It is the one song that in my opinion introduced this beautifu West Africanl singer to the Zambians. Can someone please post the video for Nayanka's Atoula to youtube!

Here is another Kenyan who rembers this song from 'Sundowner' on good old radio mother station, KBC! Lovely lovely! A little problem though.... cannot find a place to get me a copy. The usual online vendors do not have it... Can anyone help me get the pretty lady's music, at least one CD with this track? Ivorian bothers and sisters? Thanks in advance
@MuKirinyaga you welcome, I listen to that program every day, when I heard her I just loved her voice even though i don't understand, glad it was helpful
I don't speak very well english but I'll do my best to explain. She says we don't choose our parents even our children if so every one will choose the best. Then, it's better to us to take care of us and our parents, family.

So am not the only one who remembers sundowner! Great times growing up. There used to be another one from 6-7am, I can remember listening to it while preparing for school but I cant remember the name
Adsh.. i think it was In The Mood and it used to air from 5-6 am. Then there was mid-day melodies from 12-1.00 pm... then Late Date used to air at 11.00- 1200 midnight.
@adsh I do recall 'Sundowner' too, with some of the fondest memories, and in fact, most of my favorite songs ever, are those I heard on this program! But since I read your post I have been rackin my brains, trying to recall the 6-7Am one in vain! All I can think of is the VOK Swahili version that used to start with that Maroon Commandos song "Amka Kumekucha"...how sleep was sweet then! And how i still hate the prospect of treading thru the morning dew, barefoot, in those cold nandi mornings!
@larryboy1995 Haha, it's interesting how many Kenyans know this song from Sundowner. I'm still an avid listener. That show was called Memories are Made of These. Classic.
I don't speak very well english but I'll do my best to explain. She says we don't choose our parents even our children if so every one will choose the best. Then, it's better to us to take care of us and our parents, family.

... I seriously need a copy of this song. I posted this request weeks ago and someone offered to send me the song.... but I think it went to spam and unfortunately I deleted it. Please someone, anyone...this is my best all time favourite... not available on youtube/amazon... please help
Hi I just saw your mail-offer sent in january to email me this song (Iwasado - Nayanka bell). I still want it. My email is sarakasis@yahoo.com. Thank you
..Not sure who i loved more..her or Renee Diggs( RIP) ..yeah yeah I know different genre/styles but similar stage presence . By the way does anyone have a link to the more uptempo "hallelujah" ..a song she( Miss Bell) sung live with the Ivorian national dance ensemble in the very early 80's ..which used to be shown regularly on Ghanaian TV..quite an energetic performance. A link to a fan club would be welcome too !! Thanks
can anyone please tell me where I can get this song from???? It is not on i-tunes and I can not find the cds, at least not here in the USA or in Kenya. SOS please, this my best all time favourite and I NEED it... you-tubers please
The chapter of African great musicians cannot be completed without the entry of her name. Her music and voice could communicate to you and touch you deep inside... even when you were 7 yrs old and growing up 3000 miles away, and did not even understand what she said, she had a way of reaching out from the speakers and making you feel her. I thank my dad for introducing me to her music.
tu l'as draguer ou koi? you seem like she rejected you or somethin'. don't hate just appreciate....................... LOL: smiley face, it'll help u
Is she died? By power of our ancestors, I hope our new generation would come back to our real rythms, not babylon one like what we are listening these times.

It's a bit long! IWASADO means "don't be sad!"
I will not translate, but tell you what it is about:

Je vais essayer d'en faire une brève traduction:
On ne choisit pas ses parents.
Si on pouvait choisir ses parents, chacun aurait choisi des parents parfaits.
Imagines que ta mère soit aveugle, ton père aveugle, tu auras beau être un enfant voyant, tu seras leur soutien en étant leur canne.
Pendant que certains seront entrain de s'amuser, toi tu seras occupée à des tâches diverses.

Adsh.. i think it was In The Mood and it used to air from 5-6 am. Then there was mid-day melodies from 12-1.00 pm... then Late Date used to air at 11.00- 1200 midnight.

@adsh - The 6-7 am show was called "Memories are made of this " . Oh the good old days .
AlekiRoland 1 year ago
@adsh I do recall 'Sundowner' too, with some of the fondest memories, and in fact, most of my favorite songs ever, are those I heard on this program! But since I read your post I have been rackin my brains, trying to recall the 6-7Am one in vain! All I can think of is the VOK Swahili version that used to start with that Maroon Commandos song "Amka Kumekucha"...how sleep was sweet then! And how i still hate the prospect of treading thru the morning dew, barefoot, in those cold nandi mornings!
larryboy1995 10 months ago
@larryboy1995 Haha, it's interesting how many Kenyans know this song from Sundowner. I'm still an avid listener. That show was called Memories are Made of These. Classic.

I don't speak very well english but I'll do my best to explain. She says we don't choose our parents even our children if so every one will choose the best. Then, it's better to us to take care of us and our parents, family.

..Not sure who i loved more..her or Renee Diggs( RIP) ..yeah yeah I know different genre/styles but similar stage presence . Thanks

God bless you for posting it

Is she died? By power of our ancestors, I hope our new generation would come back to our real rythms, not babylon one like what we are listening these times.
Thx to Nayanka Bell
