Not that it makes much difference but I did notice that you called the gun a Combat Commander. That gun is actually a Colt XSE Commander (Model O4540XSE).

As you mentioned, one of the "features" is the ambidextrous thumb safeties. The actual Colt Combat Commander (Model O4091U) does not have an ambidextrous safety along with a few other features like a 8+1 magazine (has a 7+1) and light weight aluminum trigger.

I'm not too sure, but I think IPSC shooters use their left hand in some shoots for some reason? I think that's why they have it on both sides on some models maybe?
