@QQQQcon thank you for answearing. i asked someone else opinion too and that person told me he would rather get an d80...even he has got the d3000...the d3000 is more cheaper than the d80...so i think the price can tell which one is the better...i don`t know why but i think that what is more expensive is better...i will think more on this thing to see which one to buy it...thank you anyway very much!
Not really sound advice anymore, as with dSLRs the camera's sensor has a huge effect on quality. Your comment is true for film cameras, but no longer relevant for digital.
yes but there are so many lenses that are now compatible with the d60 that that statement is no longer all that relevant unless you already own older af lenses.
not necessarily, because you are getting a much better autofocus system, but you will not have some of the features offered only on the d60. If you want a true upgrade to the nikon d60 I would go for the nikon d3000, which is faster than the d80 and retains all the features on the d60 and has more.
Very informative thanks! Howevere the automatic ISO is not Nikons only(6:40)! As I know almost all digital cameras as well as compcts has this feature. Or may be it was something else you meant?!
also remember that the d60 doesnt have an inbuilt focusing motor, so you'd have to stick with the AF-S and AF-D lens. You'd be restricted in terms of which lenses you could use.
I picked 1 up in Canada for $850 including an 18-70mm lens. The camera is discontinued and has been replaced by the Nikon D90. The price really changes depending on the lens that comes with it.
Hello QQQQcon, I'm trading my XTi for a D80. I have the option of either getting the D80 with the 18-135mm lens OR D80 with 18-55mm VR & 50mm f/1.8 lenses. Which one should I get? Thanks! Oh and by the way, the D80 with the 18-135mm is $749.99 and the D80 with the kit lens and nifty fifty is $789.99
i personally don't like the 18-135mm lens because it is fairly expensive yet it had a plastic mount. i am a fan of the 18-70 to be honest. but the 18-55 and 55-200 deal isn't a bad choice, it's just not the one i would make
yer a good chap, love yer reviews. i have a question...i got the d60...love it..but i cant frame shots through the lcd...only the viewfinder, is this typical of dslrs? do any of the higher nikon models (d300) etc, frame pictures via the lcd?
cant do that on the d60. framing with the lcd is a point and shoot thing. Most serious photographers, even if the dslr has lcd viewing, use the viewfinder 99% of the time.
I don't know how it is with nikon bcause i own a canon camera but with canons you have ato activate live view focusing which makes a lot people think they don't have a lv focusing
There might be something like an af-on button, with canon you don't focus with your shutter for some reason
Depends on whether you want a newer or older camera. Personally I think the D80 has better image quality and you can use all of nikon's lenses, but the 450D just has more features considering that it's a relatively new camera.
hi! thanks for a very informative review... i wonder if you can suggest what camera is best for me right now i have a P&S cam and im planning to upgrade it w/ DSLR so basically that would be my first DSLR... im into HDR so auto bracketing is very helpful for me i have read so much about the D80 over D40 but i got confused which one... so what is the best camera for me?! thanks!!!
I recently started in photography shooting very good photographs using a Nikon FA 35mm SLR and have been using a point and shoot for most of my digital shots.I would really like to get the D80 to replace my simple Canon PowerShot. I will be using it for school and for some freelance newspaper photography. Do you think the D80 is a good choice?
quick question: does the fps increase on the d80 when the mb-d80 battery grip is added? i heard this is true with the d700 (it goes from 5 fps to 8 fps...pretty substantial difference).
otherwise i really enjoy your reviews. you seem very knowledgeable and have good communication skills haha
i just bought one on ebay, with all the hookups and 3 lenses, as well as a wide angle and a telephoto, for $1000 lol...thank you very much this was really helpful
no it doesn't, only the soon to be nikon d90 does (see my d90 review for details). I would get a d40 for your kid with the kit lens (nikon 18-55mm) and possibly a nikon 55-200mm vr lens. If the d40 was out 2 years ago I would have gotten that instead of the d80.
My favorite is the nikon d300, but that is because it has exactly what I want and not much extra. That makes it worth the price I payed for it. For some people the d700 might be their favorite camera or the d3 or the d90 or the d40. It all depends on what you take pictures of and what your preferences are. If you give me an idea of what you like to mainly take pictures of and what your preferences are then I can recommend a camera for you.
Well I'm an amateur photographer and I want a Nikon to be my first dSLR or first SLR camera period. I was saving up for the d40 or but I was told that the d40 is just a few steps below being an amateur professional camera and that I'd be better getting the d80. I don't specialize in photographing anything really, I just like to take photos alot. I want something that takes good photos, looks/feels good, handles well and overall something that I can always be learning with.
get a d40 or d90. d40 if you just take the photos with the camera on auto or without manually setting up your camera. d90 if you need video and if you set up your camera manually and if you shot nature and landscape (d90 gives you really saturated colors for landscape.)

im starting a fotography school, i have a d40, and i was thiinking of getting a d80, do u thuink its worth it??? why or why not... what lens is it that i cant use on the d40?
i have a couple lenses and i tend to switch them around on the go, if there is no self-cleaning, the dust in the air or from any fabric are bound to eventually get in no matter how careful you are with it,imo
i'm thinking of buying nikon d60. i am not really professional. but the feature of d80 is quite very good. i am now confuse because of your great review. what should i buy?
The D80 is pretty expensive for its image quality, comparing to the D40,IQ is totally identical and there are shots where the d40 is actually a better performer due to its low light capabilities
Yes it is, in most prints you will see no difference in the d80 and d40 image quality but their are other things about the d80 that are better then the d40. Thanks for the video i finally found the bracketing :P i always knew it was available on the D80 but never found out exactley how it worked :P but now i do.. thank you very mush for a good video.
It is extremly hard to hear what you are saying in this video.. It sounds like "Hello i cricuerna amam dojin review on the nikond80"
Also, in my opinion a review is not where some guy is just telling about the camera, but also giving it a conclusion with scores in different terms such as IQ, ergonomics and other.
Usually you'll also see image samples and comparisons to rival models.
Will you brits please just get off your soap box about pronunciation??!? "We Americans" will stop saying "Nye-kon" when "you brits" stop sticking R's on the ends of words like "draw" and "saw". Also, if we were in Japan, they wouldn't know what we are talking about anyways because in Japan they speak JAPANESE, not ENGLISH.
The D80 is entry level DSLR,and it's not as good as CANON 400D, but I must say the D80 is more comfortable in hand comparing to the little sized 400d.
D80 can not compared to 40D in EVERY SINGLE WAY, I have to say that, sorry.Even 400D can do better at ISO800+. Do your test with both cameras you ll know.
what function button and depth of field button are doing plz im newbie photographer with d80 plz

QQQQcon 2 years ago

because it is cheaper, smaller, has better noise control, Active d-lighting.

also remember that the d60 doesnt have an inbuilt focusing motor, so you'd have to stick with the AF-S and AF-D lens. You'd be restricted in terms of which lenses you could use.

dont tell people to do that. they will all be regretting their d40.

Also again, Nikon is NOT pronounced "Nye-kon" although you americans persist on it and get very upset when you are told otherwise.
If you go to Japan, the home land of Nikon, and ask for a "Nye-kon" they won't know what you're talking about.
Next time, "Nick-on" it is.
hendriksholm 3 years ago
Will you brits please just get off your soap box about pronunciation??!? "We Americans" will stop saying "Nye-kon" when "you brits" stop sticking R's on the ends of words like "draw" and "saw". Also, if we were in Japan, they wouldn't know what we are talking about anyways because in Japan they speak JAPANESE, not ENGLISH.

All Europe says Nikon. And we speek in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Slovenian, Croatian,...
Back onn subject...
Now we have Olympus E520 out, and canon EOS 450.
They seems just as good or even better than almoust 2 years old Nikon D80.

By what you hear in the review I think you can make out its IQ for youself along with ergonomics. and youtube is not the place to post images.

Hello,
Can you please recommend a D80 EV, ISO, F# setting for a night shot for stars/moon or dusk shot as well?
I have a 55-200VR Nikkor and 10-20MM Sigma.

Manual mode, lowest f-number possible (eg. f/3,5) and a shutter speed of around 2-3 seconds.

Nikon D80 and the Nikon 18-200mmVR lens, a perfect match.

thanks, ur great!

i think its only worth it if you get it with the 18-135mm, compared to the 400d. Other than that...this is way too expensive

Reply to kbsroxors:
The build quality beats the Canon in every aspect. It's not only the lens options. D80 is a more prof. camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hendriksholm 3 years ago
The D80 is entry level DSLR,and it's not as good as CANON 400D, but I must say the D80 is more comfortable in hand comparing to the little sized 400d.
jy1213 3 years ago
What do you know about that? The D80 beats the 400D in every aspect and it is NOT an entry-level.
Since you are comparing it to the 400D and calling it an entry-level, you surely don't know what you're talking about.
Nikons competetor to the 400D is the D40x and D60. The D80 is a semi-pro, like the Canon 40D.
hendriksholm 3 years ago
D80 can not compared to 40D in EVERY SINGLE WAY, I have to say that, sorry.Even 400D can do better at ISO800+. Do your test with both cameras you ll know.

To alanj1982: Canon tends to smear out details at high ISO with the heavy noise reduction.. I'd rather keep the details!
