  • Discovered how amazing this is thanks to Ian Crawford

  • Simply no one has ever made something of this level over this past 40 years.

    That's why Miles still ahead.

  • @bozner88 'In A Silent Way', 1969.

  • aditya: If you play the guitar these stacked fourths(quartal harmony) work well:

    14th fret b e a ,then drop it a 1/2 step

next chord, 2 choices: Bb C F or Gb C F (if you can find a good voicing for all 4 notes, use it!)

    final chord: 10th fret a c f (Dm)

bass line is Db D Eb hope this helps

  • Kind of reminds me of the middle of Return to Forever's "Song to Pharoah Kings"

  • Comment removed

  • It's flowing!!!

  • does anyone know the chord progression for this section of the song? amazing stuff

  • Nothing has to be said.

    The music does the talking.

  • Beautiful

  • this album is something out of the canons of beauty

  • The way they use the major 3 to flat 3 to 1 of the key was ground breakingly simple yet so musically effective......wow! what a groove! What a build! What a master of an idea........

  • Hi timarchibaldEATA . I agree completely. Hey man (or anyone reading this) do you happen to have the exact voicings for that? I can't quite get some inside voicings in those piano clusters in that very part (plus I'm lazy & play guitar which limits number of close harmony notes playable at once). Thanks very much.

  • That few note flurry at 8:14 just before the hi-hats come crashing in is my favourite moment in music. That long, beautiful build up and then those hi-hats and his trumpet, which is never as joyous as in this song. It's that often misused, usually overused, but here perfectly right word: Genius.

  • I forgot how much I listened to this 4o years ago-

    over and over. Timeless.

  • Are there any links out there where i can download this???

  • Admittedly, I think that Zawinul deserves his face on the cover, not Davis. Just like Evans in the case of Kind of Blue, Zawinul remains largely uncredited for this album, which is sad.

  • zawinul received song writing credits. what else could he ask for?

  • that chord progression is one of the most thought provoking progressions, and it has never failed to give me chills. McLaughlin's weaving guitar throughout is absolutely masterful

  • @Robokiller80 Er, what exactly do you perceive as the root progression? The bass is playing off the bass as I (think I might) hear it except for the r n' b figs. Thanks for your reply. J.R.

  • imonk....davis and zawinul collaberated on numerous occasions...Zawinul came out with his version later...all in all its still great music

  • this is music from the other side these cats were so far out or maybe one could say far gone. It's just unbelievable what the mind can concieve.

  • Wrote by Zawinul, stolen by Davis.

  • shut ur dumb ass up Joe Zawinul wrote in a silent way not its about that time u dumb ass prick

  • yeah he wrote it, but it was drastically rearranged for the album. if you have the complete sessions for this album you'll hear the difference.

  • @MilesandColtrane - and just what is accomplished by your obscenity and hostility?

  • Thanks for posting this along with your commentary about creativity. I'll never forget the first time I heard the Silent Way recordings, they really sent me into another place, and still do. Silent Way, and a lot of what Miles Davis created, will seemingly always be relevant. Now that I am older, and have a family, and am more concerned with practical things, like work and taking care of my family, it's nice to ponder once in awhile the meaning of creation, and sit back with Miles, again.

  • Still the best piece of Jazz I've ever heard. Everything, *everything* about it is exactly right. Perfection and genius indeed...

  • this shit is the bombb

  • Beautiful stuff.

  • this is the best music forever & ever

  • Thanks for posting. I left the planet many times (in '69 I believe it was)listening to this piece, my first brush with Miles back then. Thanks for taking me back.

  • so beautiful

  • Music made 40 years ago...and still ahead of its time.

  • sorry so much i want to press the point up....shit happen sometimes...i agree still aheaad.....

  • @jplew138

It's not only ahead. It's MILES ahead.

We know what it means. This music is timeless. Ageless.

  • love the music...

perhaps we can replace not creativity, but Creativity with another word: genius!

precise word selection is the way of true knowledge(ask wittengstein);)

  • Enjoyed the music, as well as the text

  • Miles at his best, i always found that "in a silent way" was too short... i always listen to it a second time :)

  • My all time favourite Miles track; agree with krautrock comments. This is texturally/sonically brilliant.

  • Love this fusion. The version with Carlos Santana is also brilliant.

  • Super dope!!

  • I think that this record had big influence on later jazz fusion, ECM records style, even Brian Eno and krautrock.

  • Many krautrock bands and Eno admitted this

  • i'd sample this creepy, haunting, and laid back, aghead of time miles changed jazz

  • I'd say Herbie Hancocks Crossings is more Creepy and haunting than this. But then again, Herbie does play on this album lol

  • this is not creepy, this is crystal , smooth, mind opening

sound. A space travel to Heaven, to the center of the galaxy.

  • One of the greatest musical innovators ever.

  • Miles is the man.
