I don't think you just need a distortion pedal. You can get a distortion sound by selecting the lead channel On your amp, turn down the clean channel and crank up that volume. do also make sure its on lead mode.

Another way of getting distortion is buying the guitar that has it (Example: Les Paul custom/Black beauty,G-4000, Korna Flying V, ect).

If it was drop D he wouldn't be playing power chords.

In a drop D you can still play power chords on the A and D string as well as if your in a drop B. E tuning is not the only tuning that you can play power chords in, other why's no one would be able to play metal at all.

Chords are really easy, get your shapes down and youll cover all them. For instance the shape of an E major chord is the same as an A minor and the C minor shape is the same as the b Minor. Some easy chords to start with are E major, A major, E minor, a minor, D major
