Ever feel like someone or some organization is watching you when your not looking? Have your thoughts and feelings become so frayed from all the tradgedy in the world that you wished you were comfortably numb? If you answered yes to one of these two questions you are now eligible to watch my new music video MOTION CAPTURE DEVICE!!
I saw them in 1980 in WashDC, where they played in a movie theatre in a rundown section of the city where punks often hung out. I thought they sounded just too weird - even "My Sharona" sounded odd then, and the Psychedelic Furs weren't out yet. But you could dance to it and it was political, and you really can't beat that for a good time. So I expected they'd catch on. What I didn't expect is that they'd achieve rock immortality and be remembered for decades. Wrong on both counts!
their live shows around this period were hot and furious. this is a good glimpse. by the next song or two, Jon King would be throwing himself across the stage with abandon
This is amazing to see - these guys are legendary as pioneers in the modern alternative revolution. What I remember most is how rare they were and nobody heard of them - felt a sense of pride knowing I was the only one in town or at a party with this LP - Entertainment. Too bad they didn't go on to make very many albums. Surely they influenced many bands.
I remember when I first started hearing about Gang of Four during the early days of the internet. . . I used to trowel around just to find PICTURES of them playing. Now I can see this, simply amazing.
I once recorded a Peel session of theirs by holding a microphone to a radio speaker. This was when the world was in black and white. Now we have the internet and hovercars.
@fastrnb I remember when I first started hearing about Gnag of Four. Thiose days were called the early 80s. No internet, no CDs, etc. We did have vinyl albums, though, and I managed to get a few of those...and I still have them!!!
Not going to lie, man, I was too busy going to grade school in the '80s. By the time I'd heard of Gang of Four their albums were all out of print. I managed to get a copy of "A Brief History," so I had about ten good songs. . . and "Is it Love."
Was this at the Metroplex, or 688 Spring Street? Way before my time, but it must've been real adventurous going to these shows in the Atlanta of yore.
Yes, totally awsome. How comes this band were not huge? I bought entertainment when it came out and it is awsome. They then drifted away...Crazy, as the likes of U2 came to fill the void.
The band's political provocativeness made for difficult relations between itself and record labels, as well as with the BBC during the Thatcher government. Unlike the Clash, Gang of Four didn't present its leftist influences with a populist appeal, and that also hurt the band's marketability.
Dont be silly, that is not the reason at all. I saw them many times in the 80's and followed their story. They just had bad management and constant disagreements with their record lable not to mention their political ideas. I have also seen them here in the UK recently.
I'm amazed there was an audience for them in ATL back then, but perhaps I shouldn't be.

Surprisingly rough crowd as well, somebody got stabbed at one gig...
