Liked the intro before, felt more real, the commando-like banter and pathetic music there turn it to some kinda holywood crap. The graphic impovement to the original game is amazing though
Every time i take a look at this, it looks awesome. Then i think about it some more and realize the combat chatter is just way too much. You... do know... radios are one-way-only, right ?
Also during the fighter engagement, there's about 6-7 lines in rapid succession, but none of them overlap (i don't think the engine allows for it) which looks very weird :P it's as if everyone became coordinated in meaningless sentences suddenly!
Another thumbs up for the video and the broadside sequence! :D
@Haxgasm don't get me wrong but freespace wasn't the first to use something like subspace , most games use the same thing but different names e.g slipspace , hyperspace, Jumpspace. And the shivans are nothing like the flood. As i said though don't get me wrong I like both games.
@mercenarieboy Yes, it's a habit seen in many sci-fi games. A hint too, yes, the Flood are very different from the Shivans, but in many ways also the same. The usual story, you know, there's this *really scary* alien race that eliminates a large alien empire that grew too arrogant of themselves. These are known in TVTropes as the "Precursor Killers". It's also a habit of Sci-Fi series.
Interplay owns the IP for Freespace. Volition was the developer and is now owned by THQ. I don't care how you do it but do a deal with THQ to get Volition to FINALLY make the third and final chapter of the Freespace series. It's a damned shame that the third was never made. Does anyone know what "Secret Project Y" hints at from Volition?
@mikelko77 Actually i believe it's between a deimos and a moloch class corvette. Reminds me of the boxart for FS2 and that one scene during the supernova cutscene where they're doing the same thing. Those two ships really don't have a good relationship.
Totally agree with you. That's some of the most badass thing in gaming history for sure. Spaceships carving each other up like Thanksgiving turkeys with massive beams.
FYI, that is a Moloch duking out with Deimos. Rakshasa is a smaller ship and it would duke out against an Aeolus (or Leviathan). Plus Rakshasa's firepower is focused in front and it'd be chewed up quickly if it engages a broadside with a Leviathan. Consider Aeolus is a mobile AAA.
What a fucking AWESOME vid. I also think the project is great. FS2 open is the epitome of a community keeping a game alive and well. Thanks go out to all the people working on this, what a class act.
those graphic improvements are fucking crazy! i went to the open source project and i cant find something that just makes the graphics better. just a bunch of battle star galactica mods and stuff
I just downloaded this and I have a problem with it running extremely slow. I try to use the mods, ie Blueplanet, but it just drags to the point of unplayability. I bought the retail FS2 from GOG, and last night, it ran fine, infact better than the retail version, but I go to start it up today, and it is horrible
Excellent effort. But without the human presence in the original opening scenes it lacks the emotional impact to me. Part of what made the scenes so great was the time and effort put into the facial movements of the virtual characters. I really don't think there ever was a time when I didn't watch the opening scene.
But FSO is awesome and I have it installed. In fact, its the sold reason I still have a windows install as I run Linux now.
No need for a windows install to run FSO. The game compiles on linux, there are binaries available, and there are launchers available. Check Hard-Light for them.

@ultimatedude I personally would play FS1 first (via FSport of course, that way it gets all the shiny things) for the story, but it is not required. FSO on its own is an updated game (engine, visuals, etc), but with the many great mods like Blue Planet and Wings of Dawn, FSO becomes so much more
and once again I find myself coming back to this epic trailer
I just bought Freespace 2 and im downloading this, is this just like hte original game but with improved graphics? or do I have to play the original to get into the whole story etc.?

I'm old FS2 fan, and I can only say that the whole FS communty has done colossal work. This intro should be put into the original FS2 as a very good add-on. Great game and great movie, both should be never forgotten.

FS 2 is the best space sim ever made... fact. Enless the space sim genre gets some newcomers which would be more than welcome, but looking unlikely in the modern military barrens of today, FS 2 might be the best space sim forever?!
Speaking from a longtime Freespace fan (over 10 years!), I have to say that as good as this video is, the actual gameplay of Freespace Open is even better. I know it's hard to believe, but this video doesn't even do justice to the impressive improvements Open offers to the original Freespace 2 engine.
Seriously, if you haven't tried it out yet, do it.

FS 2 is the best space sim ever made... fact. Enless the space sim genre gets some newcomers which would be more than welcome, but looking unlikely in the modern military barrens of today, FS 2 might be the best space sim forever?!

Good movie, bad ending. It should be cut at 3:27. Vote up anyway.

Seriously man...you should do another one..this time with custom assets. There's loads of beautiful ships to pick from.
And yes, some Zods wouldn't hurt.
